Alternative rock which is also referred as alternative music, alt rock or simply alternative rock. This is a genre of rock music became known in the 1980s and became widely popular in the 1990s. Compared to hard rock, alternative rock has more of a soft rock vibe in which the lyrics aren’t as hard hitting as hard rock lyrics may seem to the general public. Alternative music is a phrase invented in the early 1980s describing bands which broke volley of pop hair metal and formed a new direction of more focused and honest rock. It includes many sub-categories such as grunge, hard rock, rock, experimental rock, progressive rock, college rock, gothic rock, heavy metal, punk rock, power pop, hardcore punk and new wave. Throughout the 1980’s alternative rock was mainly an underground phenomena, while an occasion song would become a commercial hit or album would receive critical praise in mainstream publications in ‘Rolling Stone’. Throughout the years alternative rock has changed it’s sound from the 1980s and has added more of an edgy, punk rock to it. In which this sound has been heard in bands such as Oasis, Fall Out Boy, Green Day, Good Charlotte, Nickelback and etc. Oasis - Stop Crying Your Heart Out (Song) CLICK!
Jazz is basically an American form of music that originated in New Orleans around the 1900s. West African Rhythm music formed the basic vibe of jazz music drawing up the rich African American music culture of the south, joined with European pop and classical music of the 19 th Century. At the outset, jazz was slowly able to win an acceptance by the general public, not only because of its original cultural, but also because it tended to suggest loose morals and low social status. However, jazz gained a wide audience when white orchestras adapted or imitated it, and became rightful entertainment in the late 1930s when Benny Goodman led racially mixed groups in concerts at Carnegie Hall. Show tunes became common vehicles for performance, and, while the results were wonderful, rhythmic and harmonic expansions were inhibited until the mid-1940s. Frank Sinatra is one out of a few who are jazz artists. Others include people such as Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong and Tony Bennett. These artists have become quite successful in the jazz music industry. Louis Armstrong – What A Wonderful Word (Song) CLICK!
Pop music comes from the term “popular” is usually understood to be commercially recorded music. Pop music has absorbed influences from most other forms of popular music, but as a genre sometimes it collaborates with rock and roll and other rock styles. Pop music was introduced in 1926 in the sense of a piece of music in the music industry. According to ‘Grove Music Online’ the term ‘pop music’ originated in Britain in the mid 1950s as a description for Rock and Roll and the new youth music styles that it has influenced. Now in the 21 st Century, Pop music has been a huge success in the U.K and U.S in which there have been huge successful global artists. These people include artists such as Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Madonna, Usher, Beyonce, Jay Sean and Lady Gaga. Most of these artists have had global success and are still succeeding in the music industry. One the world’s most successful pop artist is Michael Jackson. At the age of eight Michael Jackson became is career in the music industry and went to sell 750 million album records worldwide in which he’s album ‘Thriller’ was the best selling album of all time Lady Gaga – Bad Romance (Song) CLICK!
Classical music is the art music produced in the tradition Western Liturgical and secular music, encompassing a broad period from roughly the 9 th century to present times. During the 19th century, there was more freedom of the classical period in which it was taken to extremes by composers such as Richard Wagner and operas composed by Wagner often lasted up to six hours. Other classical pieces of the period such as Beethoven's ‘9th Symphony’ required a full choir, huge orchestra and opera vocal soloists. This expansion of style spread into the 20th century, when composers such as Peter Schickele created classical pieces that featured the orchestra gargling water, while Philip Glass created classical works with electronic sounds and instruments. The classical period of 1750 to 1820 is also known as a period of just absolute music. As the previous system of patrons employing composers to create pieces of music for dancing and formal occasions began to die off. Instead composers began writing with a greater freedom from their creativity of thinking. Some famous and successful classical stars that are recent in the 21 st Century are Andrea Bocelli, Katherine Jenkins, Sarah Brightman and Russell Watson. Katherine Jenkins – Hallelujah (Song) CLICK!
R&B is the short term word for Rhythm and Blues. It is a genre of popular African American music where it was originated in the 1940s. The term was originally brought and used by record companies used R&B to describe recordings, marketing predominately to urban African Americans, at the time when ‘urbane, rocking, jazz based music with a heavy insistent beat’ becoming more popular. Later through the years, the term R&B has had a number of shifts in meaning. In the early 1950s and beyond, the term ‘rhythm and blues’ was frequently applied to blues records. Starting in the 1950s, after this style of music contributed to the development of rock and roll, the futuristic term ‘R&B’ became used to refer to music styles that developed from and included electric blues, as well as gospel and soul music. By the 1970s, ‘rhythm and blues’ was used as a extended term for soul and funk. In the 1980s, a newer style of R&B developed, becoming known as contemporary R&B. Now ‘Rhythm and Blues’ isn’t really used as a term for saying R&B anymore, but R&B is more a modern better way of saying ‘Rhythm and Blues’. Since then, there have been some successful R&B artists such as 12x Grammy Award winner Alicia Keys, Trey Songz, Bobby Valentino, Jennifer Hudson and Janet Jackson. Jason Derulo – Whatcha Say (Song) CLICK!
Indie music in popular music term’s is known as independent music. The term is used to describe independence from major commercial record labels and an autonomous, ‘do it yourself approach’ to recording and publishing. Indie has other collaboration in its form such as indie rock, indie pop, indie dance and etc in which its quite varied and appealing to the public eye. Internet technology has allowed artists to introduce their music to a enormous audience at a low cost without necessarily associating with a major recording label. The design of digital music software encourages the discovery of new music. Sites with larger libraries of songs are the most successful. This, in turn, creates many opportunities for independent bands. There are not a lot of indie music artists/groups but there a few who are trying make a big splash in the music industry such as The Ting Tings, Ellie Goulding, The Ditty Bops and Florence and the Machine. Florence + the Machine – You Got The Love (Song) CLICK!
Emo music is a style of rock music typically distinguished by melodic musicianship and expressive, often confessional lyrics. It originated in the mid-1980s as hardcore punk movement went towards the sights of Washington, D.C., where it was known as ‘emotional hardcore’ or ‘emocore’ and was opened up by bands such as Rites of Spring and Embrace. Emo music also spawned a sub-culture which is inherently punk-rock. Teens have started attending emo concerts and shouting ‘screamo’ .Some teens like to fashion a punk-emo look in which some intend to wear spotted tight pants, dyed hair and ragged jeans. This style has been widely associated with the 50s era appearances at Frank Sinatra concerts but it has been taken a step further nowadays in the modern society. Emo supporters also use gothic looks such as faces painted chalk white and hair and nails dyed black. This frightening ‘zombie’ appearance, is complete with Celtic crosses and jewellery in which it has not gone without its critics. Knowable emo artists/acts include 30 Seconds To Mars, Paramore and Tokio Hotel. In which acts like Tokio Hotel mostly dress in the emo fashion to appeal their music genre to their fans. Paramone – Ignorance (Song) CLICK!
Gothic Music came after the waning of post-punk , the sub-culture expanded both musically and visually. This caused similar variations in the different types of goth, in which local scenes also contributed to this variation. By the 1990s, there was a renewed popularity as Victorian fashion saw entered the goth scene. This had an outline on the mid 19th century gothic resumption and the more morbid aspects of Victorian culture. By the 1990s, the term ‘goth’ and the boundaries of the related sub-culture had become more controversial. New sub-cultures emerged and became more popular, even though some of them were being conflated with the goth subculture by the general public and the popular media. This conflation was mostly due to similarities of appearance, social customs, and the fashions of the sub-cultures, rather than the musical genres of the bands associated with them. The tribal gothic bands that produce music today, feature acts such as The March Violets, Joy Division, Dead Can Dance, The Birthday Party and Marilyn Manson. Most of the gothic bands come up with ridiculous names that connects with their music style. Joy Division – She’s Lost Control (Song) CLICK!
Heavy metal or which it is often referred to ‘metal’ is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, mostly in the countries of the United Kingdom and the United States. With roots in blues rock and psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, massive sound, written of by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness. Metal subgenres variously stress, alter, or miss out one or more of these qualities. Heavy metal lyrics and performance styles are generally associated with masculinity and machismo . In a typical heavy metal band, the line up would include a drummer, a bassist (bass instrument), a rhythm guitarist, a lead guitarist, and a singer, who may or may not be an instrumentalist. Most potential heavy metal bands may have supporters who like rock or emo music in which this helps bring a stronger, louder crowd the concerts and music festivals. Knowable heavy metal include Judas Priest, Kiss, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, where some of these acts have had worldwide success in rock music. Black Sabbath – Paranoid (Song) CLICK!
Reggae music was first developed in Jamaica in the late 1960s. While sometimes it was used in a larger sense to refer to most types of Jamaican music, the term ‘reggae’ more properly denotes a particular music style, in which reggae owes its direct origins to the progressive development of ‘ska’ and ‘rock steady’. Although it’s strongly influenced by traditional African, American jazz and old-time and rhythm and blues. In addition to being massively popular with the Jamaican rude boy sub-culture, ‘ska’ also gained a large following among Mods in Britain by 1964, in which it was a mighty success. As reggae pushed through to the 1980’s artists such as Bob Marley and Peter Tosh, were recognised as reggae stars. In which reggae became more famous in the U.K and U.S. Although these artists may not be alive, they still hold the music records and reggae style that everybody loves globally. • 3.
