2. Q1: In what ways does your short film use develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media products:
Like any typical music video I needed to base my own product on a actual storyline but as I
wanted to portray this theme of dreams and therefore make my video more personal I decided to
include my own personal experiences within my tasks. I wanted to engage the attention of the
sporting base audience which in the long run became a success. To do this I included the idea of
dreams and goals within my own work whilst including a personal sport in which some would
recognise whereas the majority of the audience simply would not know about the sport and
would purely watch the video to get a insight into what it is about. A good example of a sport like
video which doesn’t include a lot of miming but instead involves purely action based clips. This is
what I wanted to include within my video and in the long run I think I was more effective and
successful when including the skating clips and linking them together. In addition I decided to
include skating within my work as a month or two before beginning my A2 Media tasks I noticed
and began watching DJ Fresh’s videos which are more abstract and make the audience relate to
the video in their own personal way. This is the effect I wanted my own video to have. The
colours were very important in my music video and I wanted to create this ‘happy’ atmosphere
when watching it. DJ Fresh’s music video all include very bright colours and they have this feel
good factor.
3. A typical convention usually used is where the lights flash in time with the music or when the
clips change in time with the song and the lyrics. I attempted to use this as I thought it would add
extra effect to the entire music video and I also tried to match and link the pace of the skating
with the pace of the song. This was difficult as I had a lot of fast skating compared to the slow
paced stuff but I managed to make it work when necessary. The lightning and the location were
other elements which I had to chose wisely especially as I had a range of settings in which could
easily collide with each other if not linked together correctly.
When incorporating the transitions to my music video I had to ensure that the flow was not
disturbed in anyway. For this I had to use the correct and ‘perfect’ transitions which easily suited
the clips and the pace of the song. In the long run I decided to use ‘Fade’ and ‘Dissolve’ as it
seemed to flow easily without me having to edit the clips and the entire song.
Diegetic sound didn’t seem to suit my music video in anyway although at the beginning I did try
to include it somewhere within my video as it would add extra effect but I discovered it would
leave my music video less professional and I would be deducted of marks. The diegetic sound
that would have been heard was the sound of the skates and people talking which I did not want
included anywhere within my video and so I had to layer the videos and take away the ‘natural’
sound.
4. Q2: How effective is the combination of your main product and
it’s ancillary texts?
During our planning stages, I knew immediately that the ancillary sales will automatically revolve
around our main product of a music video. Therefore, we decided to take elements from the
actual music video and incorporate them within our ancillary texts via formatting. The text in
which I used from my own music video related in some aspects to my secondary tasks where the
vintage style and theme was concerned. This helped to create consistency within all of my tasks
set and as a result added a extra effect as the audience could see that they were all related in
some way. I wanted to keep the pictures used in all of my tasks similar as then it would be easier
to relate and connect all of the tasks and I also had to keep the colours similar due to my colour
pallet in which I had decided on before starting any of the tasks. Within my music video I created
this vintage look in which I had to refer into my secondary tasks. This was difficult but I managed
to create this somewhat layered look which could be related to as vintage and it also looked
correct and seemed to suit so as a result I decided to carry on using this effect throughout the
remaining of my tasks.
5. Yet another element that easily conveys this liaison between the main product and the ancillary
texts happens to be the film strip present on the back of the CD cover that consists of some of
the main scenes within the music video. I wanted this effect and for the audience to see this as it
showed consistency and showed how I linked and developed my ideas when progressing through
my tasks in order. This would make my tasks even more effective as they appeared to relate and
link to each other and this is one of the main comments in which I got from my audience
feedback regarding my secondary tasks both by peers and individuals.
6. Q3: What have you learnt from your audience feedback?
I have learnt a lot from the audience feedback both written and verbal in which I improved and
have learnt upon. The comments that I had received regarding my music video was very positive
and I rarely had any bad comments at all. The only negative comments in which I did receive was
that of the time and the lip sinking. This I was expecting and I could easily improve upon for my
tasks or for future tasks.
During asking people about the music video and the secondary tasks set there were a range of
comments regarding the writing. This had things to do with the random capital letters referring to
my DVD cover in which I immediately changed and altered as it created this unprofessional look
in which I could have lost marks on which is what I did not need. This was changed within a day
and it did look more professional in a lot of aspects.
Another comment passed along regarding the secondary tasks was that the choice of colours and
the theme colours ( Pallet colours) were a good choice. They mentioned that the colours were
constant throughout all of my tasks which made it more effective. I thought this was a good
comment of feedback as it links back to how I attempted to keep to similar colours through the
tasks especially regarding the DVD cover and Promotional Poster. The colours I decided to keep
were effective in many ways and related to skating in some way or another.
7. Q4:How did you use new media technologies in the
construction, research planning and evaluation stages?
As you can see when looking back at my construction from my music video, i have used the Apple
Mac in order to construct and produce my music video for my main task, of which I had two
programmes to choose from, one of which was Final cut and the other was iMovie. Out of these
two software's I decided to use Final cut as I thought it had a lot more to offer in terms of editing
clips and transitions compared to iMovie. It also had a lot more effects in which I could have
included within my main task as because of this I decided to use the more beneficial programme.
When using this piece of technology, i knew that i had to focus upon the flow of the music video
as it is essential that the visual aspects coincide with the audio. After searching on Final cut of all
the possible transitions available I decided it would be best to use a limited amount as it would
add extra effect and will keep the flow of the video flowing consistently. I thought by adding a
variety of transitions would take away the professional theme and look that the video would give
and so decided to stick with the typical one or two different transitions. Whereas everyone
wanted to create this old effect much like a lot of the professional videos do, I decided this would
take away from the idea of dreams and the positive aspect and so I decided to keep the colours
and the effect of the clips the same. Despite this I did do some researching on the internet for
some transitions or effects that I could find that would possibly suit my music video but was
unable to do so and decided it would be best not to include any at all.
