4. History
Cells were unknown until the
discovery of microscopes in the
1650’s
two scientists working
independently built the first
microscopes
Anton Van Leeuwenhoek in
Holland
Robert Hooke in England
5. Dutch tradesman and scientist
Studied pond water, sour milk,
and semen
named moving organisms
“animalcules”
“Father of Microbiology”
Anton Van Leeuwenhoek
(Early 1600’s)
6. Studied cork - a
kind of tree bark
named the
structures he saw
“cells” because
they reminded him
of the small rooms
monks slept in.
Robert Hooke (1665)
7. Robert Brown (
Discovered “nucleus”
within the cells.
Scottish botanist
and palaeobotanist
Robert Brown
8. French
gave the term
“sarcode” for the
material inside
the cell, which is
now known as
“cytoplasm”
Robert Brown
9. Matthias Schleiden (1838)
• German Botanist
(plants)
• All plants looked
at were made of
cells, so
concluded:
“All plants are
made of cells.”
10. • German scientist
who studied animals
- zoologist
• Saw that all animals
he studied were
cellular so
concluded:
“All animals are
made of cells.”
Theodore Schwann (1839)
11. Rudolf Virchow (1855)
• German physician
who studied cell
reproduction
• “Where a cell exists,
there must have
been a pre-existing
cell…..”
13. The Cell Theory has three parts:
All Living things are made
up of cells.
Cells are the basic unit of
life.
Cells come from pre-
existing cells.
14. With the invention of the microscope
and the contributions of many
scientists, a very important question
was answered in the 1850’s. The
question was:
Where do cells come from?
15. Modern Cell Theory
Modern Cell Theory contains 4 statements, in addition to the
original Cell Theory:
The cell contains hereditary information(DNA) which
is passed on from cell to cell during cell division.
All cells are basically the same in chemical
composition and metabolic activities.
All basic chemical & physiological functions are
carried out inside the cells.(movement, digestion,
etc.)
Cell activity depends on the activities of sub-cellular
structures within the cell(organelles, nucleus,
plasma membrane)
