2. Topic 1: Dealing with Different Behaviours
Positive Parenting – Dealing with Different Behaviours is about understanding some of the
reasons why children behave in particular ways and dealing with those behaviours
appropriately.
For example:
Child’s behaviour: Stamping feet
Positive Parenting thought process:
1. Interpret the behaviour:
Is he stamping his feet because he is angry?
Is he stamping his feet to get the mud off of his boots?
Is he pretending to be the Giant in Jack and the Beanstalk?
2. Do you find the behaviour acceptable? For example:
Angry foot stamping is not acceptable.
Stamping to clean mud from boots is okay – in the right place!
Stamping Giant feet are fun. I think I’ll join in the game.
Positive Parenting understands that actions have consequences
The consequences of missinterpreting a child’s actions and dealing with behaviour
inappropriately - or inconsistently - may cause more problems than the behaviour itself.
For example:
One minute you permit angry foot stamping, the next minute you don’t. 5 minutes later it’s
okay to stamp around again in a bad temper. The angry foot stamper is now ‘confused.com’
(if you see what I mean).
Fix up and Fix it
Positive Parenting is about checking and challenging our own behaviour before checking and
challenging that of our children.

4. Keep a Journal
Journals, diaries and logs are an excellent way of recording behaviour because you can see
from one day to the next when and where changes occurred in parenting techniques and
children’s behaviours.
Task
Find out the difference between a ‘journal’, ‘diary’ and ‘log’ and decide which one you
will keep for at least one week.
Make at least one entry in your journal, diary or log every day. Be creative.
Use words and/or pictures/photos. Do make sure that you have the necessary
parental consent to observe and record the behaviour of the child/children you are
working with (if not your own)
At the end of your week (or longer, if desired) take some time to thoughtfully read
and re-read your journal.
What parenting challenges have you overcome? What changes in children’s
behaviour have you observed? What new positive parenting techniques worked?
What didn’t work? Why do you think this was? Which Positive parenting techniques
did you find most helpful. How did you share parenting during the week?
