3. Reference Assistance
• Library Assistants are always available to
get you started.

• Order books, journal articles and other
items not available in the UNM-Taos
Library.
• UNM-Taos Library has access to some

5. Learn the Library Basics
• Use the Library of Congress system to find books.
• Distinguish between scholarly (refereed or peer-
reviewed) articles and popular magazine articles.
• Avoid plagiarizing someone else’s work.
• Use LIBROS online catalog to find books.
• Be a power-searcher using boolean terms: AND,
OR, & NOT.
• Use Research Databases to find journal articles.

• UNM-Taos Library uses the Library of
Congress system to organize materials on the
shelves.
• Find library materials using the spine label
which displays a unique Library of Congress
number for each item on the shelf.
• The spine label is like an address …very
specific to each item in the library.

10. Plagiarism
• Occurs whenever you use someone else’s work,
words, or ideas without giving them credit.
• Why not? Because that’s not how we share
information or build up a body of knowledge in a
learning community.
• It is also illegal. There are copyright laws (written
and implicit) involved whenever you use
someone else’s work.
• It could damage your student or professional
career.
