Learn the Library Basics
• Use the Library of Congress system to find books.
• Distinguish between scholarly (refereed or peer-
reviewed) articles and popular magazine articles.
• Avoid plagiarizing someone else’s work.
• Use LIBROS online catalog to find books.
• Be a power-searcher using boolean terms: AND,
  OR, & NOT.
• Use Research Databases to find journal articles.
Library of Congress
• UNM-Taos Library uses the Library of
Congress system to organize materials on the
  shelves.
• Find library materials using the spine label
which displays a unique Library of Congress
number for each item on the shelf.
• The spine label is like an address …very
specific to each item in the library.

Plagiarism
• Occurs whenever you use someone else’s work,
words, or ideas without giving them credit.
• Why not? Because that’s not how we share
information or build up a body of knowledge in a
  learning community.
• It is also illegal. There are copyright laws (written
and implicit) involved whenever you use
  someone else’s work.
• It could damage your student or professional
  career.
How do I credit some else’s work?
• There are formal
  ways to credit, called
  “citing.”
• Citation methods can
  be found in a writer’s
  manual:

Advanced Search
Sometimes a single keyword search does not
bring about the results you many need. By using
the nesting tools in Advanced Search, you will be
able to limit or expand your searches.

•The use of nesting tools in a search string
assures that phrase terms are kept together as
phrases when you are searching.

•Boolean Operators are one such nesting tool.

Boolean Search Terms -AND
Keyword searching:
The relationship between poverty and

representing all the records that poverty AND crime
contain both the word "poverty" and

• Notice how we do not retrieve any
records with only "poverty" or only

   word "college"
