1. Rap and Politics
(BACKGROUND MUSIC) – 2PAC CHANGES – PLAYING IN
BEGINNING
“Rap reflects life in the inner city, its lyrics expose the culture and
how people live.”
John Chambers – MBU Student
“A lot of people look at Hip pop as a type of music, i beg to differ
with that I say that Hip Hop is the Culture”
Teenager1: Rap is not just music it is a way it’s a way of life.
Rapper: Rap is not just about the music its about the culture.
Presenter: Hello and welcome to Radio Rap, my name is Aysen
and today we’re gonna to be talking about the way people perceive
rap and what it means to different people. So, what is Rap? People
believe that rap or hip-hop is just music. But is it? What does Rap
mean to you?
(Group of young teenage males)Teenager2: Rap is just the best
type of music.
(Group of young teenage males)Teenager3: It talks about real life
problems and makes you think. It just wicked.
(Group of young teenage males)Teenager 4: Rap is just sick man.
2. Music Student (male): Rap is the type of music I love, I feel like I
can relate to it. I Rap about my feelings, thoughts and troubles and
I find this soothing is it lets me share my feelings with people that
want to listen.
Young Adult (male): "Ummm... I think rap is good, but only when
rappers lyrics are meaningful. Other then that I think it gives of the
wrong vibe. People listen to Rap and think that all black people
that live in 'the hood' are the same. It gives of a negative image.
Music Student aspiring to become a rapper: "Rap is my life, it is a
way of life. And its not a bad way
of life to. The negative image portrayed by the media and the
government create a false image of what
rap really is.
Mother of teenager 4: That music is awful, it’s completely change
my son. He listens to this music
all the time and it’s constantly about, sex, drugs and crime. I think
its influencing our young
generation and creating criminals.
Teenager1: People see what the media wants them to see. They
don’t know the truth. Not all rap is
about sex and drugs. They make out that rap and the hood is just
so bad but not all can be bad.
3. Presenter: Rappers can about anything from sex and drugs to
love and family. There are many
Issues that rappers address. But do they get credit this? A lot of
rappers have strong views about
politics and rap about their thoughts? So, what is political rap?
Does it even exist?
Jared Ball “The version that is promoted, is promoted for political
and cultural economic reasons and as I was trying to argue to
make an social order, there is all kinds of movements going all
over
the place but it’s the political consciousness element that is always
suppressed”
THE LAST VERSE (OUTRO) PRESIDENT CARTER – LIL
WAYNE
Gorillas in suits
The holy war, the spiritual troops
Fighting over the mythical truth
Drowning in the political soup
They shoot missiles and nukes
Taking out such a pivotal group
The body count is the physical proof
And they thought drugs were killing the youth
Young Adult (male): A lot of rappers do not just rap out crap, there
are some meaningful rappers that rap about life and the struggles
of life. Take 2pac for example, he was a Black man who rapped
4. about life and what people should to make this world a better
place. He rapped about politics, the government and his own life
experiences, that he wanted to share with the world.
Teenager 5: 2pac.Ahh 2pac was just a legend. He is a King of
Rap and he always will be. Not because he was ‘cool’ or a
‘gangster’ but because his music changed the world.
Politician1: I believe that Hip Hop/Rap music is nonsense. The
concept of Political rap is ridiculous. It is impossible that people
believe that they have the knowledge to comment on politics and
how politicians work.
Politician2: I think this is a great idea. I don’t know if it exists but
rapping about politics could be good for us, as long as we give
people good things to comment on about us. It could make the
public feel more involved and we could understand how people
feel about the government thought songs.
Presenter: So, what do you think about rap? Now, we have a very
important guest, Professor Michael Brown who specialises in
music at the University of London.
Professor Michael Brown: Music is complicated in its self. Rap is a
genre of music that is very popular in our day and with our young
generation. There are many good and bad aspects top this genre
that can influence our youth. A lot of adults see rap as a bad
influence on their children and believes it teaches them to
5. disrespect others. While our younger generation believe, it has
inspired them to make something of their lives and taught them
that they could make something of themselves no matter where
they come from or how poor they are. Rap music has been a
strong topic of debate since it has become popular and I am sure it
will l be for a long time to come as everybody has different
opinions.
Presenter: Does rap create an atmosphere, or is it just a waste of
time? Why don’t you listen and find out...
1. THE GAME FT LIL WAYNE – MY LIFE (NOT FULL
SONG)
LYRICS - And I’m grindin’ til I’m tired
They say "You ain’t grindin’ til you tired"
So I’m grindin’ with my eyes wide
Looking to find
A way
Through the day
A life
For the night
Dear Lord, you’ve done took so many of my people but
I’m just wonderin’ why
You haven’t taken (my life? x3)
Like what the hell am I (doing right? x3)
(My Life x3)
[Verse 1: The Game]
Take me away from the hood like a state penitentiary
6. Take me away from the hood in the casket or a Bentley
Take me away
Like I overdosed on cocaine
Or take me away like a bullet from Kurt Cobaine
Suicide (Suicide..suicide..)
I'm from a Windy City, like "Do or Die"
From a block close to where Biggie was crucified
That was Brooklyn's Jesus
Shot for no fuckin' reason
And you wonder why Kanye wears Jesus pieces? (My Life
x3)
'Cause that's Jesus people
And The Game, he's the equal
Hated on so much, "The Passion of Christ" need a sequel
Yeah, like Roc-a-fella needed Sigel
Like I needed my father, but he needed a needle (My Life
x3)
2. 2PAC – KEEP YOUR HEAD UP 2 (NOT FULL SONG)
LYRICS-
Chorus:
Keep ya head up, oooo child things are gonna get easier
ooooo child things are gonna get brighter (2x)
Verse Two:
Aiyyo, I remember Marvin Gaye, used to sing ta me
He had me feelin like black was tha thing to be
And suddenly tha ghetto didn't seem so tough
And though we had it rough, we always had enough
7. I huffed and puffed about my curfew and broke the rules
Ran with the local crew, and had a smoke or two
And I realize momma really paid the price
She nearly gave her life, to raise me right
And all I had ta give her was my pipe dream
Of how I'd rock the mic, and make it to tha bright screen
I'm tryin to make a dollar out of fifteen cents
It's hard to be legit and still pay tha rent
And in the end it seems I'm headin for tha pen
I try and find my friends, but they're blowin in the wind
Last night my buddy lost his whole family
It's gonna take the man in me to conquer this insanity
It seems tha rain'll never let up
I try to keep my head up, and still keep from gettin wet up
You know it's funny when it rains it pours
They got money for wars, but can't feed the poor
Say there ain't no hope for the youth and the truth is
it ain't no hope for tha future
And then they wonder why we crazy
I blame my mother, for turning my brother into a crack
baby
We ain't meant to survive, cause it's a setup
And even though you're fed up
Huh, ya got to keep your head up
Chorus:
Keep ya head up, oooo child things are gonna get easier
ooooo child things are gonna get brighter (2x)
