An overview of the project and some specification .... ... we can discuss in detail during the workshop any detail of the project you may be interest in
THE MACE CLASSIFICATION: the vocabulary we included to index all L.O. in the databases THE MACE PORTAL: the interface between the MACE system - the classification - and the users a good “semantic web” need a very good interface design
Our goal is to bring these existing contents and communities together WE ARE NOT A COMPETITOR OF GOOGLE - we use different repositories
we start with the existing contents in the repositories - harvest the metadata into a central server based on the MACE application profile that describes which metadata we can work with, and in which format We store and process the collected metadata on ... and all this is accessible together by web services for federated search - through a unique access point - the MACE portal where we offer both a search engine for all the contents as well as widgets so on the one hand we provided the benefit of improved access and by producing additional metadata with automatic methods,by expert indexers, architectural community activities we also enrich the existing metadata and contents
the “domain” of this “taxonomy” is very wide and ambitious .... but ...(NEXT)
also the architectural domain is very vast ..... already exists standardized vocabularies for many categories or sub-domain of the architectural “general domain”
Reusing standards, not yet and international standard
but to support this “architectural-like” browsing system first of all, we need “rules” “criterions” to organize and classify all the aspects of the architectural domain for this reason we have to develop our own “rules” and “criterions”
create a knowledge organization system able to cover all the aspects of the architectural domain IS NOT “EASY” BECAUSE: An architectural project is a syntheses work, where different knowledge fields merge together ...
in this process, are involved technical aspects (...functionality goals, constructive problems, living wellness requirements, ...
but also, are involved, all the aspects connected to the poetic-artistic side (ideas, meaning the cultural and social message of a project) aspects that leads to the creation of the project.
To find a coherent strategy to approach the Knowledge organization system of such an heterogeneous subject: the various and interconnected issues have been separated and re-ordered on the basis of two possible end users’ activities
To support the documentation ... the classification system needs to be based on all those aspects of architecture that refers to objective data (aspects NOT influenced by architectural trends or by theoretical and personal concerns). The main challenge in this case is to develop a complete but standardized and shared taxonomy
More complicated to identify rules and structures to develop a taxonomy to support the Design Conception activity. This because ......
considering the architectural project as a “sign” featuring a “message” we can find strategies to classify the poetical artistic aspects of the matter because from this “sign” we can extract and therefore index - the “meaning” the “content” of this message that we can identify in ... from this sign we can extract - the “perception” that we have of it, his “expression” form, that again we can identify in ...
All these aspects and strategies, all these rules and criterions have been used to create: ...
Therefore This taxonomy features categories able to decompose and classify all aspects of the architectural domain from the technological and objective side of the matter to the poetical-artistic one
It is composed of 6 categories
that group 27 sub-categories called “facets”
each facet contains a number of hierarchical categories, which again contain a number of terms AND SYNONYMS (important aspect to be recalled in the next days)
thanks to this taxonomy e.g. is possible to start a documentation work .. searching for case studies of churches ... using the term ....
is also possible to go deeper in the technological aspects indexing, and therefore searching and finding ... about a particular technological profile: the curtain wall
but moreover, is also possible to support the conceptual and creative process of the design activity for example a designer, who want to use the water metaphor in his project, searching for advices can query the system ...
In the same way ....
So - we have this fantastic data collection from various repositories Two challenges: - connect and contextualise the resources - make the data accessible
direct connections, indirect connections connect projects via concepts
Meaningful connections This is best exemplified by the interactive installation we show here at the Biennale Symbolic for MACE; makes the idea of MACE visible and tangible Based on the semantic connections between architectural contents
