1. In order to capture some of the benefits of agricultural research that are
not quantified in ACIAR’s formal impact assessment series activities,
some interesting approaches are being taken.
Adelaide University researcher Janine Pierce interviewed oyster farmers
in Vietnam with respect to the impact a growing industry has had on
their lives.
The assessments are essentially based around giving farmers a
disposable camera and asking them to photograph what the program has
done for them and then interviewing them about the photos.
A selection of the photographs of Mr Chau Ngoc Hong, from Dien Xa
village in Vietnam’s Quang Ninh province shows that the program has
had an economic and social impact.

income and moved out of the poor-household list of the village.

the herd of buffalos, increasing income for families and village.

good-conditioned sugar cane gardens around the village, brining good
money for households

Getting money from oysters, the villagers have money to buy fertilizers.
Rice fields produce heavier grains, clearly increased productivity
compared to the crops before starting the oyster farming .

fish culture, serving themselves and others in the village.

sinh, không ăn nước suối như trước.
With money from oysters, 100% households in the village had clean
water wells. They don’t have to use water from open stream for cooking
as in the past.

19. Xung quanh làng xã từ khi nuoi hàu, các công trình hố xí hai ngăn xây lên
ngày càng đông
Since oyster farming started, there are more and more WC built around
the village and commune

20. Kinh tế nuôi hàu mang lại hiệu quả. Nhiều hộ gia đình trong làng xã sắm
bộ karaoke phục vụ cho bà con. Cuộc sống đi lên rõ rệt.
Oyster farming brings profit. Many families in the village/commune
bought karaoke sets. Life is obviously going up.
