There are more gadgets than ever that can be a distraction to Missouri
drivers. But, the biggest distraction is a cell phone. Many young drivers
feel like they are invincible and are not afraid to text and drive, but do
they really know what they are doing?

5. Statistics
Texting is only one of several driving distractions available to
teens in today’s plugged-in world. The liberty Mutual/SADD
study revealed that teens at least sometimes use these
technologies while driving.
73% change songs on their iPod or MP3 player
67% talk on a cell phone
13% update their Facebook status or Tweet from
their cell phones
10% take pictures or videos with their cell phone
4% use an iPad or tablet PC
6. According to the National Highway Traffic
Administration, in 2008, nearly 6,000 people died
from a distracted driver, and more than half a
million were injured.
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway
Safety, drivers who use handheld devices are 4X
as likely to get into crashes serious enough to
injure themselves.
Over 50 research studies have shown that using
phones while driving is risky; each year cell
phones are a factor in 1.3 million crashes,
hundreds of thousands of injuries, and thousands
of deaths.
