5. Background
• 2006 – 2012 we learnt the following:
– Increased overseas acquired HIV notifications,
particularly among the CALD
– Increased incidence of HIV criminalisation
– Increase in a number of women diagnosed with HIV
– Mainstream responses did not meet the needs of
CALD communities
– Lack of evidence to suggest that individuals were
using condoms due to an increase in STI, especially
among young CALD men
6. Issues related to use of condom
• Individuals from multicultural backgrounds have
had less exposure using condoms
• Often CALD individuals need to negotiate two
world views (own cultural and mainstream)
• The number of African clients being persecuted by
criminal justice due to alleged transmission of HIV
• Most condom health promotion messages are
based on behavioural adherence rather than focus
psychosocial determinants
7. Response to the issues
• PEACE in collaboration with SA Health developed the Strategic
Document titled: HIV prevention in Culturally and Linguistically
Diverse Communities in South Australia 2012 – 2016
• Implementation of the Strategic document was the responsibility of
HIV and STI sector in South Australia, under the leadership of
PEACE Multicultural Services

involved, one of the them is the development of Shared Care Model
