Ron was a friend of Steve Jobs from
their days at Atari. Per CNN, Ron
was asked by Steve Jobs to help
resolve an early dispute with Steve
Wozniak, and drafted Apple’s first
logo and operating manual. He
received a 10% share in Apple for
his efforts, with the remaining 90%
split between Jobs and Woz.

The technology space has countless stories of
companies and people that caught the “next
wave.”
And far more who missed it.
12. In association with:
So as we think about workplace technology – the set of
technologies, management structures, and workplace
standards that define how knowledge work is actually
done – we have to ask ourselves…
“Is this a Next Wave Moment?”
Or is it just hype?
13. In association with:
The Future of ECM: Collaborative Workspaces
• How are organizations embracing collaborative technologies?
• How will the nature of work change between now and 2020?
• What are the measures that we should be watching?
• Will changes in the nature of work fundamentally impact the
competitive outcomes of organizations, or will we look back
on this period of experimentation as a fad that will pass?
15. In association with:
“The future is already here in beta.”
– Paul Gillin, AIIM ELC Forum
– The office itself is changing, but it’s not dead.
– Advanced analytics will increasingly structure day-to-day work.
– The gap between the CIO’s need to control and the need of knowledge
workers to get work done is widening.
– Traditional hierarchies are being redefined in response to both
technology change and generational transition.
17. In association with:
Perspectives – How fast is the workplace actually
changing and what does this mean?
• “Are we even in a digital age, and if so, what does that
mean?”
• “The data equation changes at scale – How do you deal with
400 million simultaneous users?”
• “What do you do if you are at the bottom of the Trip Advisor
ratings? More marketing won’t help you.”
• “More than 90% of news will be written by computer in next
15 years.”
• “There will be a new division of labor between us and the
machine.”
• “Technology adoption trends are slow and steady.”
18. In association with:
Perspectives – How does technology change redefine the
user experience?
• “Tools of the worker are going to need to match content that
is constantly in motion.”
• “Is the design point for collaboration the individual or the
technology?”
• “It’s not about the medium it’s about the experience.”
• “Think about the workplace of the future in the context of a
college dorm room.”
• “Workspace should conform to the work that needs to be
done, not the other way around.”
19. In association with:
Perspectives – How do we avoid chaos and have security,
yet still encourage flexibility?
• “Security in the cloud is different than in-house.”
• “Until something happens, security is not a concern.”
• “Is Dropbox less secure? Probably… But people were using it
and we had to get this stuff off the network and Syncplicity
was too complicated for our people to use.”
• “Medium and large company CIOs will not permit the use of
external cloud collaboration tools.”
• “Security has less to do about technology than it does about
behavior.”
• “Governance 1.0 “sucked”.... it was committees in a room
documenting stuff.. no value.”
20. In association with:
Perspectives – How do we get the CIO to value
collaboration and give it high priority?
• Progressive CEO -- “I could run any part of this business except
yours [CIO].”
• “This all must fundamentally be about creating shareholder
value.”
• “Almost every time, the latest bright shiny object proposed by
the business is already present in the company.”
• “CIOs that operate in large company environments can finish
each other’s sentences.”
• “Don’t confuse social technologies with business
technologies.”
• “Humans are corporate assets and need to be measured.”
• “Most of what you are talking about is noise.”
