2. What is Universal Design for
Learning (UDL)?
There is no such thing as an average student so why do
most curriculums focus around the average student?
UDL focuses on making sure that getting those students
marginalized where the curriculum for the average
student does not work well for them (UDL Principles and
Practices).
Examples: Students with disabilities, students who English is
not their first language and gifted students
3. Use Multiple Mean of Representation
There is not one way of
teaching a lesson that will
allow the entire class
understands .
By teaching a lesson a
variety of ways everyone
in the class will be able to
pick up the lesson being
taught
The image above shows four different students with four
different learning problems. The teacher of these students
would have to present the information in a variety of ways in
order for all of the boys to understand. The teacher could do
a hands on activity followed by a visual diagram or short
video relating to the lesson.
4. Use Multiple Means of Expression
Every student varies in the way they express or communicate what they
know or learned. By providing students different ways to communicate their
knowledge, every student will be able to express what they know.
The picture on the left shows
students creating a website on a
computer. Teachers can
encourage students to create
websites that are easy to use by
giving the students simple
guidelines ("Universal Design of
Web Pages in Class Projects”).By
creating a webpage students can
learn to interact with technology
and share the information they
learned in a creative way.
5. Use Multiple Means of Engagement
This is the most important aspect of UDL because in order for students
to learn they need to want to learn (UDL Principles and Practices).
Engaging and involving the students in a lesson will allow the students
to want to pay attention and learn.
The image on the left shows two boys
using an interactive board to write
the names of the planets onto the
correct planet. This is a good way to
engage the students into the lesson
and make sure they are paying
attention. Most kids in elementary
school would love to go up to an
interactive board and write on it.
Teachers can use writing on the
board as an incentive to keep
students engaged.
6. The Outcome of UDL
UDL is good fro everyone, not just a specific type of
student.
Teachers find students are on the same page as each
other.
When everyone can communicate and participate in a
class that is when teachers know UDL works
(Implementing UDL).
