M81 and M82 are two interacting galaxies located 12 million light years from Earth. They are in the midst of a close encounter and gravitational interaction that has distorted their shapes. Streams of gas, dust and stars are being pulled from each galaxy into intergalactic space as they gravitationally attract and pull on one another during their interaction.
