• Centralized Patient Service – Department coordinates patient’s arrival,
registration, medical records and initial tests, pre –admission reservation
of beds and follow-up
• Data collection during admission is vital to the quality of care
• Admission sets the stage for an uninterrupted programme of patient care.
3. FUNCTIONS
• Admit, Transfer and Discharge
• Interview the patient for information collection
• Compute and arrange for payment of pre- admission deposit
• Accept reservation for scheduling future admission
• Disseminate information related to admission, transfer , discharge ,
death, etc
• Maintain bed index showing bed occupancy rate
• Arrange for the safekeeping of patient’s valuables
• Prepare admission discharge list and midnight census
• Coordinate pre-admission test in the case of elective admission
• Arrange patient escort service to other hospital areas
4. LOCATION
• Should be strategically located
• Should be situated on the same level as the hospital’s main
entrance,
• Should be readily identifiable
• Provided with sign that can be seen without difficulty from
hospital main entrance
• Should be adjacent or close to emergency service, outpatient
department , laboratory, radiology and cashier
• Should be contiguous with the hospital’s main lobby
5. DESIGN
• Pleasant and comfortable environment
• Privacy and individual attention in cubical
• Special consideration should be given to decor, furniture, etc.
• Admission and Discharge of patient should not be through the main
lobby
• Appropriate space for the patient suitcases and other personal belonging
6. ORGANIZATION
• Generally chief of Admitting reports either to the administrative services
or the finance services
• Close working relationship between admitting and registration and
medical records is necessary
• Staff consisting mostly of clerks possessing general office skills,
accounting, medical records, medical terms, nursing and ancillary services
• Staff should be computer literate.
