Should You Quit a Job You Hate Before
Finding a New One?
• A frequently asked question about job hunting is if it is
advisable to quit your current job before you get another. The
level of motivation and incentive to continue working and the
risk of leaving a steady job in these harsh economic times are
  vital factors to consider.
• This question has touched on two different, but equally
important aspects of the current state of the employment
  sector.
Should You Quit a Job You Hate Before Finding a New
One?

• 1. The unemployment rate, which is about to reach double-
  digit figures and
• 2. Competition for positions, which is rapidly growing by the
  day.
Conventionally, having a job, even one you hate, is preferable to
prolonged joblessness. If you decide to quit now and deal with
the consequences later, expect to be on the job hunt for a while.
There is no set or guaranteed time taken to find a new job.
Mental and fiscal preparedness for that experience are key.
Should You Quit a Job You Hate Before Finding a New
One?

Those who in the end just can't stomach their current job any
longer and want to take their chances as a "free agent," find
that some recent developments in the employment market
could work to their advantage. Back in the days, people without
jobs were considered less desirable as potential employees
preference is still given to employees already working in similar
jobs. However, with so many qualified employees laid off due to
budget cutbacks, the stigma attached to being out of work has
 diminished considerably.
Should You Quit a Job You Hate Before Finding a New
One?

In fact, being out of work may be more upsetting to you than it
is to potential employers. To most cultures, work often provides
personal identity, and income. The feeling of worthlessness and
the lack of being marketable is caused by lack of a strong source
of emotional support. Money can also become a constant worry
– you may start out with sufficient resources, but in today's job
market what is “sufficient”?
Before resigning, consider how you'll react to being unemployed
i.e. being out of a nonproductive job- which may be a good thing
in your view, losing your sense of purpose and structure and in
addition, a shrinking bank account.
Should You Quit a Job You Hate Before Finding a New
One?

Critical thinking and feeling good about oneself is vital.
Desperation is NOT a desirable quality in a job applicant.
 TAKE AWAY
 • In order to stay focused and maintain your momentum:
-Rely on your family, friends, hobbies and volunteer work. They
provide a strong, positive identity. Continue to pursue other
activities along with your job search.
-Spend no more than 40 hours a week looking for work.
-Structure/make a plan for each day.
Should You Quit a Job You Hate Before Finding a New
One?
• Talk to a friend about your worries to regain your objectivity.
• Recognize the high and low points of every job search.
• Perseverance, a belief in yourself and a good support system
will see you through the tough times.
