Politics has always been a source of innovation in digital and social media, and with the Hong-Kong protests, it's verified again. Maybe more than just "a new thing", the Umbrella Movement shows how messaging apps are the future of social media. They're faster, they're both one-to-one, one-to-many, many-to-many, they're light, they're mobile-only... And they allow anyone to connect and interact without caring about "organic reach" or "zero inbox".
Other companies such as WeChat and LINE are taking huge leaps into m-commerce, even scaring a giant like Alibaba in China. Anyway, we'll discuss this topic in a future newsletter ; )
Mobile money is the second big trend we can see emerging from our monthly observation of the digital world.
Twitter has now several companies using it to send money through tweets. French bank BPCE makes it as easy as 140 characters to send over money, provided you have your bank account linked to your Twitter of course.
Facebook is not lagging very far, as it has discretely hired Paypal's ex-President to lead its messaging service (yes, the one that made a standalone app... now it makes sense, doesn't it?). And if you had a doubt, a Stanford student just discovered a hidden money transfer feature within Facebook messenger's code.
Add to this Apple Pay, Paypal accepting bitcoins, and you have a big, still a bit messy picture, of how tech giants are rushing to be the first one allowing m-commerce with as little friction as possible.
A recommendation? Well, from our point of view, you should:
Monitor how the field is moving. All major players are involved, more or less stealthily. Just grab some popcorn and watch the match, when a winner will emerge, then can you move more confidently.
Play and hack with mobile money. Hackathons, or just attending events on the topic, are a good way to see who is toying with mobile money and m-commerce. Prototypes are ugly, but they're the starting point.
Think of your own assets (brand, community), and how you could plug monetization on top of that. An online, integrated payment solution is huge, but you still need people to use it, so building and taking part into the conversation(s) is still up to date.
We've also included a bit more of digital innovation this month, to show how big companies, startups are moving into the field. Because YES, our second line of business in innovation is growing fast too : )

2. HK Protests: Chat Activism
Forget Facebook and Twitter, Chat Apps are where movements are born
Social media a key
component of “Umbrella
Movement” that began in
August 2014.
As activists prepare for
social network lockdowns,
they turn to chat apps to
rally supporters.
Here are three apps that
made a difference in HK this
summer.
Whatsapp:
Group chat function highly useful in
disseminating key information. Easy to
exit groups and delete message logs if
captured by police.
Telegram Messenger:
Similar to Whatsapp but with encryption
to prevent spying by Chinese authorities.
Permanent message deletion handy
during police apprehension.
FireChat:
No WiFi or carrier connection needed to send
messages within a 70m radius. Useful when
large crowds lag cell connection. Encryption
function still in development.
3. Facebook: Hyper-local Ads
Advertise within a one-mile radius
Facebook launches
Local Awareness Ads
Physical stores and businesses can
target ads to anyone who lives/ was
recently within a chosen distance of
their store.
Data gathered from IP addresses
and real-time location from Nearby
Friends and Messenger App
Look out for this ad option’s release in Singapore in
coming months. You can even add a
“Get Directions” button to your ad.
You’re literally steps away from driving physical sales!
4. Facebook: Money Transfer
Send money over social media?
This feature has been in the works for
awhile via the PayPal app and Kotak
Mahindra Bank
Incidentally Facebook recently hired
PayPal’s ex-President to manage its
messaging service…
…And a Stanford Computer Science student
stumbled upon a money transfer feature
hidden in FB messenger’s source code
Keep an eye out for an announcement soon to
take this feature public! Considering FB’s amped
up e-commerce efforts with the Buy Button and
credit card storage functions, this isn’t a surprise.
5. Twitter: Tweeting Money
@transfermoney via Tweets
Yet another social media platform
enhances its money transfer capabilities
Twitter teams up with French bank,
Groupe BPCE
A simple tweet allows you to send
money across to another person
regardless of their bank details
Get ready to see more financial institutions
develop social media banking services!
6. Campaigns: #NotInMyName
Muslims against ISIS
London-based group Active Change
Foundation decided to voice out
against ISIS kidnapping and killings
YouTube videos encouraging others to
tweet why IS does not represent them
#NotInMyName and videos went viral,
but also spawned parody movement
#MuslimApologies Social media is no doubt a platform for
debate and change. But viral campaigns
must be ready to engage with equally viral
backlash or parody responses.
7. Campaigns: Self-Esteem Weekend
Dove encourages self-esteem via Snapchat
Dove launches 5th Annual Self-Esteem
Weekend early October
Snapchat is one of its platforms this
year and used it to engage knee-deep in
the conversation on self-image
Girls are encouraged to send snaps sharing
their insecurities, and Dove “self-esteem
ambassadors” will respond with snaps in
real- time
Don’t be afraid to get pers onal with your followers on
accounts like Snapchat! Might seem daunting at first,
but creating a sense of brand intimacy among loyal
fans can pay off in the long run.
8. Digital Innovation: Coca Cola
Startupifying the Happiness Brand
Problem:
As popular as Coke may be worldwide, it needs to constantly innovate
to stay on top as the global refreshing beverage
Solution:
Take eight teams of entrepreneurs in eight cities worldwide, give them
all they need to test and try ideas, watch some startup magic happen.
Results?
You’ll just have to read on
to find out.
9. Digital Innovation: Hitachi
Bringing the “social” back into the digital
Unlike other companies struggling to go
digital, tech companies like Hitachi live and
breathe innovation on a daily basis.
Interestingly, they’re focusing on bringing
back the social element to digital life.
Their goal this year?
To make society safer and more secure
with Hitachi technology through “social
innovation”
Hitachi kicks off its movement with
Hitachi Virtualization a
“connected intelligence” public safety
system that includes nifty map-based
softwares that analyse disparate pieces of
security data in one platform.
Here’s a company truly “inspiring the
next” with big data analytics and the
internet of things. Learn more about their
work here.
10. Digital Innovation: %LRPHWULF $LG
3M Biometrics take refugee camps into the digital age
It’s no surprise that the humanitarian
world is joining the social and digital
media bandwagon
But more than just setting up a Twitter
account, Kilis Camp in Turkey is a
trailblazer in the humanitarian industry
with its 3M biometric camp technology.
3M’s system stores personal information
and fingerprints of refugees. This
biometric ID is used to access camp
facilities, and has also been useful in
locating missing family members.
Read more on how 3M’s technology
has been used to create the “perfect
refugee camp” a few kilometers away
from rapid fire.
11. Digital Innovation: Disaster Data
Philippines’ open-data disaster humanitarian response
Open-data is a recent trend
organisations to release their datasets
freely, so that the public can make use
of it and create new services
The Philippines has been highly
advanced in this area, especially in
disaster relief applications.
Datasets have been used to
track where foreign aid goes for instance
in disaster reconstruction efforts
Kudos to the Philippines!
Check out Innovation is Everywhere
article for an overview of open-data’s
use in Filipino disaster work here
