• Imperative: We all agreed that we need to be more more agile and flexible in the
marketplace, and we are more agile in our execution now, but not in our planning
• The change: Now that we have Agile running at the team and program level, we propose
adopting rolling portfolio planning
• What’s the same/different: Instead of an annual cadence, the rolling portfolio will be
updated at least quarterly
• Leaders role: As chair of the portfolio planning team we ask you to sponsor the change
• My role: We have the proposal and associated training ready for the team
• Action: Can we run you through the details and then train the team?

• Imperative: To achieve our company objectives to be more agile and flexible in the
marketplace, we are adopting an Agile product development framework
• The change: We will be planning, executing, and deploying changes in smaller
increments
• What’s the same/different: You will still be involved in the cross-functional team, but
instead of doing infrequent, but time-consuming, coordination, there will be frequent,
short coordination activities
• Modified role: Your representative will be invited to these coordination activities called
Scrum of Scrums (or Agile Program meetings, or Release Team meetings, or …)
• The offer: We will be happy to give your reps an overview of the new Agile framework
• The close: Shall I set that up?

• Imperative: Continuous deployment is now a strategic objective for XYZ
• The change: So we are moving from a weekly release to continuous small deployments
• What’s the same/different: We will still hold a weekly TOI for the help desk to summarize
changes, but we will also post changes on the XYZ wiki as they happen
• Modified role: Support staff is going to need to check the wiki when they get support calls
• The offer: We will provide training in the next TOI and also send out an announcement
• The close: Can you give everyone a heads up that they won’t want to miss this?

All rights reserved. 17 • Leader As Partner • Imperative: We all agreed that we need to be more more agile and flexible in the marketplace, and we are more agile in our execution now, but not in our planning • The change: Now that we have Agile running at the team and program level, we propose adopting rolling portfolio planning • What’s the same/different: Instead of an annual cadence, the rolling portfolio will be updated at least quarterly • Leaders role: As chair of the portfolio planning team we ask you to sponsor the change • My role: We have the proposal and associated training ready for the team • Action: Can we run you through the details and then train the team?
