At the end of 2010, an estimated 34 million people
[31.6 million–35.2 million] were living with HIV
worldwide, up 17% from 2001.

HIV Prevalence
Remains the region most heavily affected
by HIV.
In 2010, Accounted for 68% of all people
living with HIV, in a region with only 12% of
the global population.
Accounted for 70% of new HIV infections in

South Africa having more people living with
HIV (an estimated 5.6 million) than any
other country in the world
10. SUB-SHARAN AFRICA,
AIDS Deaths
Almost half of the deaths from AIDS-
related illnesses in 2010 occurred in
Southern Africa.
AIDS has claimed at least one million lives
annually in sub-Saharan Africa since 1998.
Since then, however, AIDS-related deaths
have steadily decreased, as free
antiretroviral therapy has become more
widely available in the region.

New Infections
The total number of new HIV
infections in Sub-Saharan Africa has
dropped by more than 26%, down to
1.9 million [1.7 million–2.1 million]
from the estimated 2.6 million [2.4
million–2.8 million] at the height of the
epidemic in 1997.

Refentse Model for Post-Rape Care a multisectoral
approach to post-rape care.
Integrating services in SA reduce delays in
accessing PEP and collecting medical evidence for
legal purposes, improves access to care, the
quality of clinical history and examinations,
provides pregnancy testing and emergency
contraception; STI treatment; HIV counselling and
testing; trauma counselling, and referrals.
13. SOUTH AFRICA – IS AYOBA
South Africa boosts collaborative TB/HIV care -2010
210 000 people with tuberculosis were tested for HIV in
+ 60% were identified as HIV-positive.
60% of 3.9 million people in HIV care, screened for TB,
with 12% given TB preventive therapy.
The HIV counselling and testing campaign (included
tuberculosis screening), 760 000 people with HIV being
screened for TB, of which120 000 were provided with
preventive therapy

Minister
HIV antenatal prevalence 30.2% which is
the same as was in 2005 but is slightly up
from the 29.4% in 2009
HIV prevalence steady at:
• 21.8% for 15 – 24 yr olds
• 37.3% for 25 – 29 yr olds
