What is…WEB 2.0
“The Web we know now, which loads into a browser window in essentially static screenfulls, is only an embryo of the Web to come. The first glimmerings of Web 2.0 are beginning to appear, and we are just starting to see how that embryo might develop. The Web will be understood not as screenfulls of text and graphics but as a transport mechanism, the ether through which interactivity happens” DiNucci, D (1999) Fragmented Future, [Available at http://www.cdinucci.com/Darcy2/articles/Print/Printarticle7.html]
“What we need to remember, though, is that the Web as we know it now is a fleeting thing: Web 1.0. Its relationship to the Web we will be familiar with in years to come is roughly the relationship of Pong to The Matrix. The Web as we know it is essentially a prototype—a proof of concept.” DiNucci, D (1999) Fragmented Future, [Available at http://www.cdinucci.com/Darcy2/articles/Print/Printarticle7.html]
A well (over) used quote… “Web 2.0 is the business revolution in the computer industry caused by the move to the internet as platform, and an attempt to understand the rules for success on that new platform. Chief among those rules is this: Build applications that harness network effects to get better the more people use them. (This is what I've elsewhere called ‘harnessing collective intelligence.’)” O’Reilly, T. Web2.0 Compact Definition: Try Again [Available at http://radar.oreilly.com/2006/12/web-20-compact-definition-tryi.html] Web2.0 Summit
What do we understand as Web 2.0 OR How do we experience Web 2.0
How many of these are we using?
Wesch, M (2007) The Machine Is Us/ing Us [Available at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLlGopyXT_g]
The Read only Web became the Read/Write Web It was thought of as the democratisation of the Web
These authorial changes and shifts in the structure of how the internet is constructed, developed and it’s content authored saw Time Magazine’s person of the year is “You” (2006/7)
Visit Site>Sign Up>Use Web 2.0 made the internet easy to use and opened it to the masses. Most services are free, accessible, often mobile, pervasive, dynamic and engaging. Most services started from a grass roots approach and have been shaped for and by the user.
Web 2.0 has developed “Social Media”. This media is one of connectedness, it is open, active, fast, and collaborative. It encourages collective authorship and users and authors to share, comment and develop each others work and spaces. It is mobile, pervasive and integrated.
But some would argue… “instead of creating masterpieces, these millions and millions of exuberant monkeys, many with no more talent than our primate cousins are creating an endless digital forest of mediocrity” Keen, A (2008) The Cult of the Amateur: How Today's Internet is Killing Our Culture, Broadway Business
Blogs and Portfolios Students are expected to engage with the internet and promote their work in a dynamic, engaging, professional and interesting way. Using a mix of off the shelf services, web 2.0 technologies, software's and services (and web design packages) to create a production blog and portfolio to promote and display their media production.
Professional and Personal Profiles Students will be required to sign up for a number of different web 2.0 services and site and use them both in and outside the classroom to scaffold their learning and production work.
First Up… Students are required to sign up for a twitter account, for those that have one logon and help support your fellow tweeters and classmates
You will need a “handle” or username and you need to great a profile. You need to select an “Avatar” or profile picture
Following We need to form a twitter group, this will involve all following eachother. To start this process you need to search for alan_hook (that’s me)
Class Tweets #MED312
Class Tweets @alan_hook
Creating A Profile You will need to fill in your profile, keep it professional and make sure it represents what you want to show to the rest of the world, both professionally and personally. We will be looking at constructing a brand for yourself throughout this module.
