Life science courses in manipal life sciences centre
1. Life Science Courses in Manipal Life Sciences Centre
The discipline of Life Sciences deals with all the sciences associated with living organisms including
microorganisms, plants, animals and human beings. It encompasses both basic and advanced fields of
science such as biology, genetics, biotechnology, microbiology, molecular biology, life systems
technologies, biomedical technologies, pharmacogenomics etc.
The Manipal Life Sciences Centre (MLSC) carries out advanced research on clinical and biotechnological
issues that are relevant to human health. Its research and developmental activities are actively
supported by DBT, India in Translational Medicine, ICMR, DST, BRNS and several other industry partners.
Fortified by its excellent research faculty, facility and resources, and the various international
conferences and workshops that it conducts, the institute aims at becoming the leader in research and
development, and promotes enthusiasm among young, upcoming scientists.
The Manipal Life Sciences Centre (MLSC) is identified as TIFAC-CORE (Technology Information,
Forecasting & Assessment Council Centres of Relevance & Excellence) under vision 2020 in the area of
Pharmacogenomics. MLSC is actively promoting advanced research in India and abroad. The Centre is
thriving on the excellent research faculty, facility and resources; aiming to become the nation's number
one research and learning Centre. The Centre conducts international conferences and workshops for
promoting new enthusiasm amongst young scientists.
MLSC, previously a part of Kasturba Medical College (KMC) was established in 2002 and obtained
independent identity in 2006, is one of the scientific hubs in Manipal and headed by the Director, Dr. K.
Satyamoorthy. It has the honour of being one of the top biotechnological institutes of the country.
The mission statement of the Centre is to engage in cutting edge research, training, education and offer
help to the community in the field of human health. The Centre prepares students for productive
careers in this versatile, dynamic, evolving discipline. Upon graduation, students will have learned skills
in critical thinking, problem solving and communication necessary for success as practicing
biotechnologists or in post-graduate studies.

2. The Centre has MOUs with, among other institutions in India and abroad, Queensland Institute of
Medical Research (QIMR), Flinders University and University of Queensland in Australia and Lancaster
University, UK. It has research collaboration with various institutions in United States, Germany and
Australia. MLSC is associated with three major activity areas viz., education, research and diagnostics.
1. Undergradaute courses : BSc Biotechnology
2. Postgraduate Courses: a) MSc Medical Biotechnology
b) MSc Bioinformatics
c) MSc Molecular Biology and Human Genetics
3. PG Diploma in Cellular and Molecular Diagnostics
4. Bioinformatics:
Bioinformatics is extensively used in biomedical research and developmental activities. It
integrates mathematics, computer science, molecular biology, information technology and genetic
engineering. In this era of genomic revolution, the data is being gathered faster than it can be analysed
and utilised. There is a tremendous demand for professionals who can use technology to utilise the
ever-growing collection of biological information. Bioinformatics is the science of storing, extracting,
organising, analysing, interpreting and utilising biological information. This course intends to provide
hands-on training along with project work, to help competently work in a bioinformatics environment.
The knowledge acquired also provides additional qualification for a prospective candidate towards
employment.
