Politics of the Interface Quiz and more
1.
2. They are not…
• as my summer class failed at understanding,
Selfies.
• Cindy and Dickie Selfe are professors at Ohio
State. They’re relatively famous in digital and
visual rhetoric work; Cindy is also well known
for her work with sound
4. Today’s the day!
Obtain for yourself a sheet of paper and a
writing utensil.
Feel free to raid the printer for paper.
5. OMG! QUIZ!
… but not an evil quiz, really.
10 questions.
You have to get 6 right to get an A.
If you get 5, you get a C.
Less than 5 and you fail.
6. Question 1
I call them Cindy and Dickie because I know
them. They publish using their full first names.
What are “Cindy” and “Dickie” short for?
7. Question 2
Why was the Indian born professor held and
fined at the Mexican border?
8. Question 3
Early on, Selfex2 asserts that computer
interfaces act like maps in that they do the work
of colonialism.
What does that mean?
9. Question 4
What percentage (approximately) of the student
population in America did the Selfes believe
would be non-English language backgrounds by
the end of the decade (so the year 2000)? You
can’t Google to check mid-quiz, but for extra
respect knuckles, do you think they were right?
10. Question 5
Why is the computer hard drive as a filing
cabinet and files in folders potentially
oppressive, or at least problematic, according to
C&D Selfe Factory?
11. Question 6
This article touches on– though doesn’t use this
exact term– the “grand narrative” of technology.
What is the claim that technology offers us–
something Americans loooooove– that we
couldn’t get in a regular classroom because our
bodies carry gender, race, and ethnic indicators?
12. Question 7
“In general, computer interfaces present reality
as framed in the perspective of modern
capitalism, thus, orienting technology along an
existing axis of class privilege.” (p. 486)
WHAT?
13. Question 8
What is the problem- according to the reading–
with ASCII being the world standard?
16. When finished…
Make sure your name is on your quiz, then pass
it in. Make sure it gets to my podium.
17. Quick and Dirty…
Selfe & Selfe assert:
The computer interface is based on a white
male world, likely because desktop computers
were conceived in America (at least) to serve
white males with desk jobs.
In a world where more users are NOT working
in offices (and are not white and male), this
might not be the best default interface.
18. Quick and Dirty…
The challenge:
So how DO we create interfaces?
Is something like Pinterest– which mimics a
pinboard– less white male and office? If it’s
not, what does it say to us on a theoretical
level that women (the stats don’t lie) love
Pinterest ?
19. Every design…
…has an element of interface. It must “connect”
to the user, whether this is through assuming a
“lens” (e.g. “the gaze”) or creating a method
through which to read (e.g. the Monopoly board
is a set of squares representing properties that
you read clockwise from “Go”).
So we must always ask– why are we directing
our design at THIS audience?
20. For Tuesday…
…coordinate with your group and begin building
a “plan” for your client work. At the end of next
class I will ask you to email me a tentative work
plan so I can check in/make sure you’re planning
to use time well.
We will also make super-quick iMovies so those
of you who have never used the software can
see it. Bring headphones.
