DOE’s Industrial Assessment Centers (IAC) Program “Greening the Industrial Workforce”Alliance to Save Energy Educational Seminar Series June 2, 2010 Michaela Martin, P.E. Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Critical Workforce Needs in All Industrial Sectors ,[object Object],According to a 2007 report by the U.S. Department of Labor, approximately 500,000 workersin energy-related fields are expected to retire over the next 5 to 10 years. Manytraining programs were reduced or eliminateddue to industry downturns over the years. Energy-related development programs have not expandedat the same rate that industry’s need for energy professionals has rebounded. Employers in all sectors of the industry need workers who are more proficient than their predecessors in math, science, and, especially, technology skills.
Workforce Development Challenges The need for skill developmentof both new and incumbent workers in the field of energy management. The aging of the workforcein the industry and imminent retirement of a large segment of incumbent workers. The need for both conventional and new approaches to education and training. DOE’s Industrial Assessment Centers have been meeting these challenges for many years…
Industrial Assessment Centers (IACs) Since 1977, the IAC’s has offered university-based technical assistance for small- and medium-sized manufacturers Assessments are performed by local teams of engineering faculty and students from 26 participating universities. IAC teams are comprised of engineering students led by senior engineering faculty (most of whom are registered professional engineers). Eligible Plants - Annual Energy Costs < $ 3 Million - Gross Sales < $100 Million - No. Employees < 500 - No In-house Energy Staff - Are Within 150 Miles of a Center
Industrial Assessment Centers Completed over 14,500 assessments at U.S. manufacturing plants, providing nearly 110,000 cost saving recommendations for saving energy, minimizing waste and improving productivity, since 1977. Currently conduct approximately 300 to 400 assessments per year across the U.S. Each center currently conducts 15 – 20 assessments per year in their region, but capacity exists to significantly increase workload, if needed. Identify an average energy cost savings of $175,000 - $200,000 per plant visited, with a 35% - 45% implementation rate. Are considered to be regional hubs for energy expertise in both industrial and buildings sectors. Centers are partnered closely with their state energy offices, utilities, local industries, and other energy organizations. Centers conduct webinars and local training workshops for end-users, consultants, Manufacturing Extension Partnerships (NIST-MEPs).
IAC Alumni are the Nation’s Premier Talent in Industrial Energy Efficiency:Part of the New Green Work Force 2,840 students trained On average, 50% - 60% pursue energy-related careers upon graduation 100 – 160 students departing each year Engineering fields including Mechanical, Industrial, Electrical; some Business school participants, also Student status: Undergraduates – 70%, Graduates – 30% Average time spent in IAC: 18 months
