  4. No problem! Here are 5 steps how to make a promotional video from scratch, all by yourself, with stuff you have at home. Content, Script, Design, Execution, Editing
  5. Step 1: Define the content
  6. Use the mind mapping technique to brainstorm all the ideas you want to put forward and then organize them in a logical, fluid way. Then just start writing the content without overthinking it.
  7. You can also use different storytelling techniques to frame your thoughts. Hook your audience in the first few seconds, describe a setting, create different characters, portray a conflict and resolve the whole plot with a happy ending.
  8. You can use this framework to structure your content and to trigger different emotions. [Hook, Problem, Solution, Benefits, Motivation, Call to Action].
  9. Finally, decide which type of video is best adapted to bring your message across? How you want to present your message in your promo video. What kind of video do you want to make and which will support your message the best? [Live video, Screencast video, Animated video, Drawing video, Cut outs video, Or all mixed together]
  10. Now you take all your ideas and rewrite them in the way that fits best your video type. Use Google Docs if you write the script together with others or if you want to get feedback on the script you write from your personal focus group.
  11. If you will record yourself in the video, write exactly as you speak. Use shortcuts [I’m gonna vs I’m going to], fill words [and, uhm, like, so, ...] and any reactions [laugh, slow down, whisper]. [Show an example: left a sentence of content and right the same sentence in script]
  12. Differentiate the main narrative from B-Roll, text overlays, and voiceover using different formatting or callouts. Write in your script everything else too, all the characters, different scenes and shots you will need to make. A script doesn’t just include dialogue. If your video will require multiple shots, characters, or scenes, include these details. Be sure to include any necessary information about the set or stage actions, such as a wardrobe change.
  13. Finally read your script aloud. Take out anything that sounds too formal or not like yourself. Rewrite it until it sounds the most natural when you speak.
  14. Keep it short and simple [KISS]. Ideally your script should be no longer than 2 pages. If you have more, read it again and try to cut out all the unnecessary fat. Try to get your message across in the most concise way possible. Keep your content short and to the point. A 1-3 min long video is perfect for today’s busy viewers.
  15. In this step you define which design features you want to use to convey your message. Videos can include many design features: video recordings of yourself, pictures, icons, animations, screencasts, drawings, text, background music & sounds, other videos (b-rolls). You can brainstorm with others to have more diverse ideas.
  16. Decide what you will shoot, from which angle, in which setting. Take into account possible cloth changes if you want to impersonate somebody else in the video. Differentiate the main narrative from B-Roll, text overlays, and voiceover using different formatting or callouts.
  17. You can also use the storyboarding technique. How will each scene play out? What visuals will most effectively convey the message?
  18. Record your audio only during a voiceover in a quiet room which doesn’t echo and with a decent microphone.Buy a microphone if you can. YouTube is extremely aggressive when it comes to using copyrighted music illegally and will take down your video as soon as it is flagged as such. The music volume should not interfere with your voice. It should be just loud enough to be heard in the background. Make sure the genre fits your video and what you want people to feel.

  23. So, every video software shows a timeline of your video and audio tracks. You can click anywhere and see the exact moment of the video inside the preview window. Then you can cut this timeline into smaller pieces of video and audio tracks and move them to an earlier or a later point in the timeline. You can also add transition effects between them. As simple as that. You add audiovisual content on the timeline by “importing” the files. So you click and choose which files the software should import, and then you simply drag them down on the timeline. For the audio, you can make several timelines so you can mix the tracks. For example, your voice will go on one track and the background music on another so you can adjust the volume separately.
