3. Dreamworks Studios is an American film production company which produces and
develops films, television programmes and video games.
It has produced or distributed more than ten films with box-office grosses of more than
$100 million each.
It was founded on October 12th 1994 and in 2004 it extended into animation films with
the creation of Dreamworks Animation Studios.
Some films Dreamworks have released are: Saving Private Ryan (1998), Meet The Fockers
(2004), Transformers (2007) and Paranormal Activity (2009). Dreamworks have produced
various TV shows such as: Freaks And Geeks (2000), and The Americans (2013) and some
videogames it has also helped to produce are: Goosebumps (1996) and Jurassic Park
(1997).
They would be unlikely to produce our film as they generally produce high budget films
with famous actors rather than small productions. They would also be unable to make
our film into a videogame or TV show as it would not be successful or famous enough to
acquire its own TV show/videogame. This would mean there ‘d be no way for
DreamWorks to increase their profits so producing our film would not be an advantage to
their company.
4. Warner Bros is also an American film production company that makes film, television and
music entertainment. It is a subsidiary of Time Warner and has several subsidiary
companies of its own such as Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment, Warner Bros.
Television and Warner Bros. Animation.
Warner Bros has merged with many other production companies over the past few
decades and also has ownership over various studios such as New Line Cinema, enabling
them to receive help with production and distribution and expand their profits by taking
a share in other companies.
They have produced/co-produced many high-grossing films such as The Dark Knight
which made $534,858,444 and Inception which made $292,576,195.
Warner Bros could have the potential to help distribute our product as although they
produce successfull and high profit films, they often take on small companies to help
them grow and succeed by providing additional funding and equipment. If they saw
potential in our product they may want to form a partnership as it means they will not
only be able to expandd their company further but also acquire a share of any profit
made.
5. Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation is an American film company and one of the six major
American film studios.
It has distributed many famous films such as Avatar, Star Wars and Ice Age. Television series also
produced by Fox include The Simpsons, Futurama and Glee.
Among the most famous actresses to come out of this studio were Shirley Temple, who was 20th
Century Fox's first film star and Marilyn Monroe.
20th Century Fox seem to focus more on TV series rather than films, meaning they’d be less likely
to distribute our production and also as it’s one of the most well-known institutions it’d be
difficult for our small production to stand out against the competition from other films/series
produced by 20th Century Fox.
6. Paramount Pictures Corporation is a film studio, television production company and motion
picture distributor, consistently ranked as one of the "Big Six" film studios of Hollywood. It is a
subsidiary of US media conglomerate Viacom.
It has distributed several successful film series, such as Transformers, Mission: Impossible and
Indiana Jones.
It is the fifth oldest surviving film studio in the world, being created in 1912 and in 1970
Paramount teamed with Universal Studios to form Cinema International Corporation, a new
company that would distribute films by the two studios outside the United States.
Paramount often focuses on distributing films rather than helping with funding/production, for
example they distributed successful films such as Shrek and How To Train Your Dragon which were
both produced by DreamWorks.
Paramount would not be a beneficial partner for our production as they would be less likely to
help in financial areas or help with equipment and as we are an independent company we may
struggle to provide all funding ourselves. Also, as our film is low-budget and made with lower
quality equipment Paramount would be less willing to try to distribute it as they may think that it
would be unsuccessful and therefore harder to distribute profitably.
7. Pixar Animation Studios is an American computer animation film studio founded in 1979.
The studio is best known for its CGI-animated feature films created with PhotoRealistic
RenderMan, its own version of the industry-standard RenderMan programming interface used
to generate high-quality images.
The Walt Disney Company bought Pixar in 2006 at a cost of $7.4 billion meaning that Pixar is
now a subsidiary of Disney.
Pixar has produced fourteen feature films such as Toy Story and Finding Nemo. As of December
2013, its feature films have made over $8.6 billion worldwide with an average gross of
$616 million per film.
Pixar wouldn’t distribute our production as not only are they a subsidiary of Disney, meaning
it’d be Disney who took on independent companies rather than Pixar themselves, but also they
specialise in animated films and as our film is not animated it would not fit in with their
company and would not appeal to the right target audience or comply with their usual film
genres.
8. Universal Studios is the world's third oldest major film studio, being founded in 1908.
Three of Universal Studios' films—Jaws (1975), E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982), and Jurassic
Park (1993) (all of which were directed by Steven Spielberg) achieved box office records; each
became the highest-grossing film ever at the time of its initial release.
Universal’s success has expanded into many areas other than just film, such as TV and animation
and has even gone as far to create theme parks and resorts in various countries. In 2011,
approximately 30.8 million guests visited the Universal Studios theme parks, making it the third-
largest amusement park operator in the world and it is one of major competitors of Walt Disney
Parks & Resorts and SeaWorld Entertainment.
Universal is without doubt one of the largest and most successful film institutions and take part in
all aspects of film making including production, funding, advertising and distribution.
It is likely that Universal would be a far too major company to take notice in our small production,
however if they saw potential in our product and had belief that it would be a success they would
be able to be a massive help financially and could also help market our product through various
advertisements, merchandise and celebrity endorsements. They could also help with production by
making our film higher quality and aid with distribution, leading to a largely successful production
that they would then be able to take a share in, expanding their own profits meaning that although
our production initially seems too small to be taken on by Universal, they may actually see it as a
challenging yet successful business venture.
9. CONCLUSION
Overall, the media institution that would be the most likely to
distribute our product is Warner Bros as although they are a major
company that usually distributes high budget films they have also
frequently aided small companies in the production, funding and
distribution of their films and have many partnerships with other
institutions. If they saw potential in our film they would be able to
improve it by using their high-quality equipment and then help with
advertising and marketing to ensure a successful product is made.
They would then be able to take a share of the profit expanding
their own company, meaning that a partnership with Warner Bros
would not only be beneficial to us but it could also benefit them.
