3. Invented in 1891 by a Canadian , James A.. Naismith, at what is now Springfield
College in Massachusetts, the game was exported to Europe in 1893 where it has
been played ever since.
In 1936, one year after the First European championship was organized by the
International Basketball Federation (FIBA), the sport made its Olympic debut at the
Belin Games. However, basketball became truly popular in Europe only after the
Second World War, due to the presence of American troops.
Women´s basketball became an Olympic sport in 1976.
At Barcelona Games, the overwhelming dominance of the American men´s team
–nicknamed “The Dream Team”- made NBA basketball popular around the world.
12. 24 second clock
Placed above each basket, it allows players to see how
much time they have left before attempting to score.

15. HOW A GAME IS PLAYED
Two teams of 5 players each try to score points by tossing the ball into the opposing
team´s basket. They may use only their hands to control the ball, and are not allowed
to run while holding it.
A field goal counts for 2 points, or 3 points if it is thrown from outside the 3-point line.
A free throw is worth 1 point.
The team with possession of the ball must launch an attack within the following time
limits:
•After taking possession of the ball, they have 8 seconds to move the ball forwardl
across the mid-court line, and 24 seconds to take a shot at the basket;
•A player who is hemmed in by an opponent must move the ball by dribbling,
throwing, or passing it within 5 seconds.
16. Equipment
The ball is made from 8 pieces of leather stitched together and filled with air.
Uniform: Each team wears a light-colred uniform for home games.
Player number: NBA players pick their own numbers; in FIBA games, they must be
between 4 an 15.
Shoes: They must provide solid ankle support, as sprained ankles are the most
common injury.
17. Opening Jump Ball
A basketball game begins with the referee tossing the ball
straight up into the air between the opposing centers, who try to
tap it toward a teammate. They are allowed to push or hit the
ball, but not to grasp it.
18. PASSES: To catch opponents off guard, ant to reduce the chances of an interception, most
passes are short and direct, and almost always made without looking at the receiver.
Chest pass: this pass is used when there is nothing between the thrower
and receiver.
The ball is gripped in front of the chest with both hands and thrust forward
by the arms and a flick of the wrists.
19. Bounce pass: Used to get an opposing player who creates a screen between the
thrower and the receiver, since the area over which he has the least control is the area close to the floor.
20. Baseball pass: This often gives a hard-pressed player a better angle for a pass.
The player’s free hand follows and protects the ball during the windup.
21. MOVING ON THE COURT
Players are allowed to run anywhere on the court, but are not allowed to run while holding the ball.
Pivoting and dribbling are two techniques used to move around without passing.
pase.
DRIBBLING
The player with the ball can move freely while bouncing the ball on
the floor. The hand doesn’t strike the ball, but taps it with flicks of
the wrist. A dribbling player doesn´t watch the ball, but signals his
teammates and keeps an eye on opponents. Stopping and
restarting a dribble is against the rules.
22. LOW DRIBBLE:
The low dribble is used against a looming opponent, or when trying to penetrate the opposing team´s defense.
The ball is bounced knee-high, and shielded by the player´s free hand and body.
23. HIGH DRIBBLE: A high dribble is usually used during a counter-offesive. A playerin the clear can
move faster while bouncing the ball at waist or shoulder height.
24. SHOTS: The ultimate purpose of every move in the game is to get a player into a good scoring
position. The accuracy of a shot at the basket depends on balance and speed of execution. Jumping and
throwing are two separate movements that must be properly coordinated.
25. JUMP SHOT: This is the most common shot, because of the tremendous
opportunities it provides –particulally for 3-point shots. One hand is used to hold the ball in place, and the
other to shoot it toward the basket. The ball is release at the top of the jump.
26. LAY-UP: After charging past opponents, the player jumps close to the basket and lays the ball
in. The player´s wrist remains stiff while the hand pushes the ball in from underneath.
27. DUNK: The player dunks ro jams the ball into the basket with one or both hands, thus
preventing any opponent from stopping it. This is the most spectacular shot.
29. OUT OF BOUNDS: A ball that touches or goes outside the court boundaries is considered out
of bounds. It is put back into play by the team that did not have possession of the ball when it went out of
bounds. Once the referee blows the whistle, the player with the ball has 5 sec to put it back into play.
30. PLAYER POSITIONS
1. point guard: usually the fastest player on the team, organizes the team's offense by controlling the ball and
making sure that it gets to the right player at the right time
2. shooting guard: creates a high volume of shots on offense; guards the opponent's best perimeter player on
defense
3. small forward: often primarily responsible for scoring points via cuts to the basket and dribble penetration; on
defense seeks rebounds and steals, but sometimes plays more actively
4. power forward: plays offensively often with his back to the basket; on defense, plays under the basket (in a
zone defense) or against the opposing power forward (in man-to-man defense)
5. center: uses size to score (on offense), to protect the basket closely (on defense), or to rebound.
32. The referees call violations when the rules of motion (pivot, foot, dribbling, travelin) or the time limits (3
seconds, 5 seconds, 8 seconds, or 24 seconds) are broken. The opposing team is then given possession of the
ball.
