Assessing the Development
Difference Between West
and East Amman

Lana Andoni
Why I chose this topic
To determine whether the perceived development
difference between West and East Amman actually exists

For years, people have perceived Amman as being divided
into two parts; the West, the more prosperous part
where upper – middle neighborhoods, high rise office
buildings, hotels, businesses and banks locate, and the
East, the older part of Amman, where lower income
neighborhoods, refugee camps, and small informal
 markets locate.

I wanted to see whether this difference exists, and to what
  extent…
Method

• Determine the indicators to be tested -
i.e. education, healthcare, employment, income

• Creating an English and Arabic form of the
  Questionnaire
Method
Method
• Systematic sampling

Suggested Development projects
SOME of the suggestions included –

• Projects which provide job opportunities for the youth with reasonable income
• Improve and provide transportation in the district
• Parks for children
• Libraries for children
• Improve health care & renew facilities
• Means for recreation such as parks, playgrounds, pools for children
• Better garbage collection process
• Open vocational schools
• Mall
• Parking lots
• Maintain the cleanness of the neighborhood
• ‘Change the people’

• Sports clubs
• Underground train
• Better Car parks – ensure every business which opens has its own parking space
• Open offices to transmit information and complaints between population and authorities
• Make roads and pavements more handicapped friendly
Conclusion

• After obtaining the results and analyzing the
data, I found that discrepancy between the two
  regions is inevitably there.
• This difference in development is witnessed – to
different extents - in all of the assessed aspects,
  whether in female empowerment, education
  levels, income, employment rates, technology
  availability and health care.
• We need to try to bridge the gap between these
  two areas
