The document describes a mobile app called Jumbles that aims to promote healthy eating and exercise habits in children. In the app, children adopt and care for digital pets called Jumbles, who mimic the child's eating and exercise behaviors. The more fruits and vegetables a child eats and exercises they do, the healthier their Jumble becomes. An arcade area in the app unlocks games and customization options for Jumbles as children earn more health points. The goal is to motivate children to develop responsible habits by directly linking their choices to their Jumble's well-being.
2. Meet the Jumbles
Jumbles are digital pets with a difference. While they’re
incredibly cute, they’re also extremely impressionable.
So much so, that they copy everything their owner does.
They’ll eat what you eat. Jumbles even follow you while
you exercise.
Everyone who downloads the app gets a Jumble of their
very own. As Jumbles are in bad shape, the goal of the
app is to get your Jumble to full fitness and keep it there.
The reward is an array of amazing arcade games, which
you can unlock as you achieve more health credits.
The idea is that each lovable creature’s health and
happiness will be based on a combination of the users
own eating habits and exercise. Instead of just promoting
healthy living to kids, we’re going to make them directly
responsible for the health of their very own adorable
character. You are what you eat… and so is your Jumble.

3. Once upon a Jumble
All Jumbles start out life in Obesity Orphanage, and it’s a
sad place. There’s nothing to do. No fun games, no one
to play with. The only comfort for the creatures living there
is junk food. They eat it out of boredom but now they feel
sleepy all the time and their teeth are starting to rot. Can
you adopt a creature and give it a healthier, happier life?
A word of warning...your Jumble is a creature of habit. If
you leave it on its own for too long it’ll curl up in a corner
and eat cookies, getting fatter and fatter until it explodes!
But play games with it, feed it the right food and you’ll
have a friend for life.
You’re only a
Jumble away...
4. Get ready to Jumble
Choose a Jumble from Obesity Orphanage.

How it’ll work
Using visual recognition software, the camera in a tablet or
smartphone will be able to identify and distinguish different
foods. Direct the lens at a plate of food, and the app will be
able to identify different fruits or vegetables. Children simply
need to record one portion of fruit and one vegetable to get
their healthy eating credits. This keeps their Jumble suitably
nourished to exercise and be happy.
Why it’ll work
Children are constantly being told to eat more of what’s
good for them. If they see how the food they eat has a
positive/negative impact on their very own pet Jumble,
then they’ll get in the habit of eating fruits and vegetables
more regularly. Not only will they be responsible their own
nutrition, they’ll be responsible the health of their Jumble too.
1. Press this
2. Then take a photo of your food,
keep it in the yellow box
7. How the app interacts
with kids
Reminders will direct Jumble owners to log one fruit and
vegetable per day. If a child uses the camera function to
track their eating before the scheduled reminders, then
the alerts will not appear.
9. How it’ll work
For 30 minutes each day the app will prompt children to take
part in healthy exercise. Once they select an activity, the
phone will be locked from being used while an appropriate
screen saver plays out. For example if a child selects
soccer, then all non-essential apps will be unusable, and the
screen will show your Jumble practising his soccer skills.
On completion, healthy activity points will be added to their
Jumble’s score.
Why it’ll work
Kids love running around and having fun. They just need
positive encouragement. If they can see the benefi t exercise
has on their Jumble, they’ll be reminded of how exercise
can benefi t them too. Plus if they can’t use their tablet or
smartphone for 30 minutes, then they’ll be prompted to give
sports or exercise a try.
1. Press this
2. Then select your activity
and for how long
10. How this section engages
with kids
Kids can go into the activity section at any time, but will
also receive daily reminders. For 30 minutes, a Jumble
will follow its owners lead in healthy exercise.
12. Customise your Jumble
When kids fi rst adopt a Jumble they’ll be able to choose
from a limited selection of colour options and accessories.
But as their health points increase, a huge amount of
funky outfi ts and trendy trinkets will be available to trick
out your Jumble!
13. Games
As if looking after your very own Jumble
wasn’t incentive enough, there’ll also be a fun
games section. When the Jumbles app is first
downloaded, users will have access to three
games. The health points will determine your
Jumble’s ability in these fun games, and when
enough health points have been achieved: kids
will be able to download further game releases.
Bumble Jumble
Your Jumble will be transformed into a Bumble
Bee. Flying from left to right across the screen,
your Jumble will need to avoid obstacles in the
form of Junk food. Intercept a candy stick or
chocolate bar and you’ll have to go back to
the beginning.
Jumba Zumba
Jumbles love to dance, but they need a lot
of help to keep coordinated. Guide your
Jumble through a host of dance routines.
As you progress the routines get faster and
more complicated. Can you handle the heat!
Jumble’s Happy Meals
Your creature wants to try its hand at cooking.
Problem is, they have no idea how – the only
hot food they’ve made are instant noodles. Can
you help your Jumble cook a tasty and healthy
meal in just 30 seconds? Touch the food items
that you think should go into the Jumble Stew...
but watch out, Lord Lardo has been in the pantry
and he’s hidden unhealthy bits and bobs among
the good stuff!

14. Growing the brand
With support from the government in funding
this app and the wider campaign, Jumbles
could become a household name.
The characters would be ideal for fun and
colourful children’s books. They’d tell the story
of the Jumbles’ fi ght against various baddies,
with an underlying message of the importance
of healthy living.
The Jumbles could have a spin-off show, their
own theme song and even their own dance!
The Jumbles would make great cuddly toys and
clothes, could be fashioned into pencil cases
and could appear on lunchboxes as a reminder
to stay healthy.
To get schools involved and spread
the word about the app, we could bring
‘Jumble packs’ to primary schools...
delivered by the Jumbles themselves!
Each pack could contain a Jumble pencil
case and notebook, a sticker and a
magnetic nutrition pyramid chart, Jumble
style, that they can stick on their fridge.
Jumble characters could make guest
appearances at family-friendly events
and give out healthy snack packs too.
