Group Presentation
 Students will work in small groups to present a description and analysis
of an actual communication scenario from a group member’s
professional experience. Group members will share recommendations
for the organization’s next steps based on course discussions. Sufficient
time to prepare for the presentation will be given during two class
periods. (Students are expected to work together on campus to
complete the project so they are able to compare the experience to the
online group discussions at the end of the course.) Each group will be
required to submit support materials for their presentation (PowerPoint,
Prezi, handouts, etc.) as well as facilitate a question and answer session
with the instructor and other students.
Group Communication Reflection Paper
 After each student completes the group project and residential session
on the topic of group communication, the will submit a reflection paper
discussing what they learned from their reading, class discussions,
observing other group interactions and their own experiences as an
integral part of a group. The paper must be between 2,000-3,000 words
and should contain specific examples supporting reflections.

The Art and Science of Changing Our
Own and Other People’s Minds
Changing Minds
Who is Howard Gardner?
 Developmental Psychologist
 Senior Director Harvard Project Zero
 Known for:
 Theory of Multiple Intelligences
 Authoring multiple books on MI and other aspects of
learning
How might you change someone’s mind?
The 80/20 Principle
 A relatively small percentage of the people
consume the majority of the beer.

Application
 Consider a time when you needed to explain
something to someone multiple times.
 What did you differently and why?
 Whether it’s internal or external customers, when
might you need to help other people understand
new information in order to be successful
yourself?

BYOD Class Exercise
 Number off 1-9
 Identify your MI by your number
 1: Spatial, 2: Linguistic, 3: Bodily/Linguistic, 4:
Musical, 5: Interpersonal, 6: Intrapersonal, 7:
Naturalistic, 8: Existential
 Use whatever you have access to learn about
your MI
 Internet (on your computer or cell phone)
 Your textbook
 ?
 Present it to the class
 I’ll take notes in the Ppt and post them!

Linguistic
Bodily-Kinesthetic
Musical
Interpersonal
Intrapersonal
Naturalistic
 Nurturing
 Relating information to one’s natural surroundings
 Classifying natural forms like plant species, rocks
and mountain types
 Today:
 botanist
 Chef
 zoologist
Existential
 Spiritual or religious intelligence
***Not approved by Gardner did not want to commit
to a spiritual intelligence, but suggested that an
"existential" intelligence may be a useful construct
 Priests, ministers, counselors/advisors
Who can learn best from a BYOD
learning exercise?
The 7 Levers of Change
Reason
 A rational approach
 Lists, facts, etc.
Research
 Compile relevant data
 Past case studies
 Surveys
Resonance
 What “feels right”
 What can you say or do to make a point
resonate?
 Experiential questions like, “Have you ever…”
Redescriptions
 Presenting information in multiple formats
 Consider the 80/20 rule: Words, charts, pictures
Resources and Rewards
 What do I have that can make me successful?
 WiiFM-everyone’s favorite radio station!
Real World Events
 What’s happening in the real world that makes my
information relevant?
Resistances
 What would keep people from adopting the
concepts and information I’m sharing?
