– Pinned page needs applicable image to pull from.
– Copyright concerns.
– May have to generate content first.
• Setting aside time on a regular basis to pin.
• Ensuring high quality content.

• Give credit – be conscientious of copyright concerns
and pin from the original source.
• Check your repins – before repinning, make sure the
image links to the correct source.

Should you be using Pinterest? Benefits and best practices

  • 3. Pinterest: A tool for collecting and organizing things you love. • A way to visually share internet bookmarks. • Another low-cost tool to promote programs, publications and resources.

  • 5. Who you’ll be reaching • 15% of Internet users. • Whites, young people (18-40), the well-educated, those with higher income, and women. -Pew Research Center, 2012
  • 6. Easy to sign up • Free. • No longer need an invite. • Sign in with an email address. • Connect with Facebook*/Twitter. • Now caters toward businesses = analytics. Not sure? Sign up for a personal account first and play around.
  • 7. Think: What’s my goal? Who is my audience? Where is my audience? Do I have time? Who will do it? What will I post? • Will keep you from burning out and will make your effort worthwhile. .
  • 8. Obstacles to Overcome • Having “pin-friendly” or “pinnable” content on your website. – Can’t be pdf. – Pinned page needs applicable image to pull from. – Copyright concerns. – May have to generate content first. • Setting aside time on a regular basis to pin. • Ensuring high quality content.
  • 9. Ideas • How-to or how-it-works infographics • DIY videos • Healthy recipes • Publications on composting, gardening, etc. • News stories (back to school packets, spring gardening packet, holiday packet) • Event or program flyers • Activities or curriculum for kids
  • 11. Not a good fit? • Still need to make your site pin-friendly. • Test your website to see what can be pinned. – Pin It button • See what is already being pinned. – http://pinterest.com/source/youru rl • Add social sharing buttons.
  • 12. Should help not hurt your social media presence. • Think about your audience and strategy. May not produce the same return on investment as other social networking sites.
  • 13. To-do • If you have an account, use it – don’t have empty boards. Might as well not have a board. • Mix it up – have a good mix of original pins and repins. • Give credit – be conscientious of copyright concerns and pin from the original source. • Check your repins – before repinning, make sure the image links to the correct source.

  1. Intro:-Name-Job title-How I got into Social Media-How long UGA Extension has been using Pinterest. Have yet to perfect it. Going to be talking about Pinterest - the latest social media craze. Pinterest allows you to share ('Pin') articles, images, anything of interest online. Not trying to convince you yes or no; just helping you see if it’s right for your institution Who uses if for personal use? Who is already using it to represent a “business?”Pinterestis driving traffic to websites like nothing before, and will grow from strength to strength in the coming years. Already it has eclipsed MySpace and Facebook as the fastest growing website of all time, boasting 10 million unique visitors a month.

  3. Not necessarily about keeping up with friends or news. Users are seeking information and ideas. Centered around interests – follow boards that interest you. Popular: gardening, recipes, fitness, green living, personal finance, Bring to light content that may be hidden on your website– showcase or feature contentBrings traffic to your websiteThink of it like a bulletin board with pinned magazine clippings ORa visual form of delicious.
  4. Similar to twitter, has it’s own vocabulary:A pin starts with an image or video you add to Pinterest. You can add a pin from a website using the Pin It bookmarklet or upload an image right from your computer. Any pin on Pinterest can be repinned, and all pins link back to their source.A board is where you organize your pins by topic. You could pin ideas for remodeling your bathroom to your House Projects board, for example. Boards can be secret or public, and you can invite other people to pin with you on any of your boards. Ourboards are the same as the navigation on our website. Can also have board for events, 4-H, university.Think of it as a bulletin board, and a pin a newspaper clipping or post it note.When you follow someone, their pins show up in your Pinterest home feed. You can follow all of someone's boards or just the ones you like best. To manage who you're following, go to your profile and click Following.Your home feed is a collection of pins from pinners and boards you follow. It's updated every time someone you follow adds a pin.
  5. Perfect for reaching moms and consumers. More urban ag clientele Probably not the average farmer. Get sucked in and spend hours on the site.
  6. Can’t connect facebook page, only your personal account. Link to your website to make it most useful. Be sure to verify your websiteAnalytics not as robust as Facebook. Can use pinpuff. Use comments, repins, likes, email notifications to get an idea of popularity and reach.Metrics include: Pins, Pinners, Repins, Repinners, Impressions, Reach, Clicks, Visitors.#1 Who is pinning my content?how many unique users have pinned your content across various date ranges,the number of repins, impressions (how many people have seen your pins) and clicks (the number of actual visits) to your site. #2 Which content is being pinned right now?The dashboard’s “most recent” tab lets you track the content that is being pinned from your website in real-time.   #3 What’s my most popular content?Businesses and brands are better placed to curate their content more effectively and determine the best approach to take when engaging consumers.
  7. See what you already have that can pinned. May not produce the same return on investment as other form of social media. Depends on where your audience is. Don’t know where your audience is? ASK!Your audience’s interests should guide what you pin.
  8. Even if you don’t have a pinterest account, having pin friendly content is keyPins need to be visually appealing and useful.Having text on the picture is best because captions can be changed. Makes it harder to copy.No lawsuits yet. Read pages terms of service/legal info before pinning from. There’s a code you can use to make your content unpinnable = implied consent? Educational/fair use argument. Just be smart. Found that even if we haven’t pinned in awhile, things will still be repinned.   12. Don’t want boards with nothing on them.Best to pin a little at a time instead of a ton at onceDon’t just pin your own content. Self promotion is frowned upon.
