m eet specific criteria, including:
- More than 6 m onths after stroke
- Can partially open and close the hand
- Som e m ovem ent of the wrist, elbow, and
shoulder

WHOCANTAKEPART?
FREQUENTLYASKEDQUESTIONS
H ow do I becom e involved?
- Contact the CI therapy Research Group at (205)
934-9768 or at citherapy@uab.edu and we will work
with you to complete a telephone questionnaire to
determine if CI therapy islikely to benefit you.
H ow does the evaluation and selection process work?
- We are recruiting adults who had a stroke 6 or more
monthsago.
- In addition to the telephone questionnaire, potential
candidates will be evaluated by our physicians and
therapists to ensure that they will benefit from our
research study.
- The evaluation determines a candidate's health status,
movement ability, balance, and functional ability to use
the weaker arm.
- If you qualify for the study, you will be randomly
assigned to one of 4 groups: 1) standard in-clinic CI
therapy, 2) Gaming CI therapy, 3) Gaming CI therapy
with additional therapist contact, or 4) traditional
physical and occupational therapy. The last group will
receive gaming CI therapy six monthsafterwards.
H ow much will treatm ent cost?
- If you qualify for the study, you will receive treatment
at no cost.
H ow much tim e is involved?
- 3 half-days for evaluation and testing, 10 days for
treatment, and 1 half-day at 6 months for follow-up
testing.

2. CI therapy is a form of rehabilitation that many studies
have shown produces substantial improvement in arm
movement even many yearsafter stroke.
In thisstudy, standard CI therapy will involve:
- A three week program of intensive physical
rehabilitation of the weaker hand and arm that
requires10 half-day visitsto our research center.
- Wearing apadded mitt for most of the time you are
awake. The mitt limits use of the stronger arm and
encourages use of the weaker arm during everyday
tasks.
The main purpose of the therapy is to get patients to
carry over new skills learned during the treatment
exercises to everyday tasks done throughout the normal
course of the day. Those who have shown the greatest
improvement have done so by working hard and closely
following all project instructions.
THISRESEARCHSTUDY
Recovery Rapids incorporates CI therapy?s basic
techniques into an easy-to-use virtual reality video game
that can be played on ahome video game system.
In the home-based version of CI therapy:
- Patientswill use an XBox One with video capabilities
and M icrosoft Kinect, with sensors that detect
movement.
- The video game automatically progresses with the
player, increasing in difficulty asthe patient improves.
- The game is customizable to the patient's needs. For
example, if a patient has more trouble with hand
activities, the game can be customized to present
more hand tasks.
By having rehabilitation "at their fingertips," stroke
patientscan drive their own recovery.

Therapy
CI therapy has been shown to be effective. However,
there isacompelling need for alower-cost version of CI
therapy that can be easily accessed in the comfort of the
patient's home. This study investigates how traditional
CI therapy comparesto a new, home-based, gaming CI
therapy.

- The video game tasks were derived from activities
that are used in standard CI therapy.
- Different video game tasks target different
movements.
- Improvements on the video game translate into
improvement on everyday tasks.
- The study will lend an Xbox system to participants
to take home. It will need to be returned after
treatment.
- Five visitsto our research center will still be required
over the 3-week treatment period.
