Andrew Skeene - Health - Exercising to Improve Heart Health
1. Exercising To Improve Heart Health
Studies clearly show that exercise helps the heart.
Even people with heart disease can gain
important benefits from exercising
once they have their doctor’s approval.
2. How much and how often?
It's always best to check with your doctor, but as a good
rule of thumb, shoot for 30 minutes of moderate-
intensity activity (brisk walking) 5 days a week.
If this seems too strenuous, you can start slowly and
build up to it over time.
Once your body adjusts, you can take your workouts to a
new level by adding more time and new challenges.
Remember, you don't have to do the same exact thing
every time. It will be a lot more fun if you change it up.
3. What type?
A good heart-healthy exercise plan should include:
Aerobic Exercises:
Walking
Running
Jogging
Biking
Hiking
Swimming (low impact)
With aerobic exercises you
are moving fast enough to
raise your heart rate and
breathe harder. However,
it’s important to make sure
you are still able to talk to
someone while exercising.
Otherwise, you are pushing
yourself way too hard.
It’s also important to keep your pace low for a few
minutes at the start and end of your workout. That way,
you warm up and cool down each time.
4. Don’t Forget to Stretch
Be certain to stretch after
you've warmed up or
finished exercising. You'll
become more flexible if you
do this a couple of times a
week. Take care to stretch
gently so it doesn't hurt.
