2. Four Directions Personal connections – building relationships Embedding librarians into coursework Outreach in traditional ways; print & website Social media & web 2.0
3. The Need for Active Librarians Expanding resources offer information overkill Users need help leveling up for more complex, specific searches & sifting results for relevance & reliability Librarians need to be out there knowing and being known by users
4. Not your old school library Librarians must develop connections in multiple creative ways The library must be out there with users on their ground; where they are Programing initiatives should move services & resources directly to patrons
5. Outreach to Build Relationships Traditional outreach methods still also used Audio & video public service messages can spread word of library events, activities, services and materials on campus channels Face to face events involving fun, food, & music should draw patrons into the library sphere
6. Embedded Librarians Get the librarians outside the walls; take the library to the students & faculty where they are learning Just in time instruction “Active learning” activities teach research process
7. Extending Our Reach Embed within Blackboard courses Establish & support library offices and/or librarian presence at satellite locations Develop a mobile app (Cornell & Yale) Library office hours in academic departments Student mentors, aides, & volunteers
8. Library Web Site: Pump Up Rich Content Bucks County Community College library web page
35. Conclusion Active engagement by librarians offers access and involvement into the information search process When patrons know and are known by librarians, informational needs can be addressed with a flow of services that is directly responsive to the community of learners Connections don’t just happen, and don’t appear overnight – effort, planning and creativity must be energetically engaged in a focused team effort
Notes de l'éditeur
Information resources have multiplied but users still need guidance for finding, identifying, analyzing, synthesizing, and using information sources and servicesQuick Internet searches result in overwhelming hits; students need help sifting for the gold but they may not realize this without friendly guides availableLibrarians must be out there in the trenches working side by side with patrons, knowing and being known as experts and helpful aides
In order to meet patrons information needs librarians must develop connections and working relationships with usersFaculty and students may no longer come into the building looking for help; Face to face meetings, embedded librarian programs and roving librarian actions should move services & resources directly to patrons
Traditional outreach methods should be used to spread the word: signage, posters, paper pathfinders, bookmarks, flyers, newspaper and bulletin announcements of events, services, resources should be frequently published & distributed
Pair a librarian with professors for courses involving research & allow time for joint planning & teachingJust in time instruction – a librarian embedded within course allows collaboration on teaching the research process and puts resources directly into the curriculum“Active learning” activities teach the research process and the library resources in meaningful, relevant, purposeful work students are interested & invested in within their academic areas of study
Develop, refine & expand LibGuides to resources and services within Blackboard coursesEstablish & support library offices and/or librarian presence at satellite locations; El Centro, University Center of Lake County, Tutoring Center, Center for Teaching and Learning, etc.Develop a mobile app for devices to make resources accessible & searchable anywhereEstablish library desk/office in academic departments during peek hours of student/faculty trafficRecruit & train student volunteers or aides in academic departments (upper classmen?) to mentor & teach younger students in library usage, research, resources
