investment activity which has occurred in India from July – September 2013.
This document was prepared by the research team at Sparta Strategy
For clarity, our analysis only considers projects wherein the investing company has
allocated a capex & identified a business location or has taken a decision to increase
capacity at an existing facility.
To make it even more relevant, we do not consider or include project announcements
wherein the mode of expansion is through a franchisee or distribution partnerships or
mergers & acquisitions.

3. Summary - Foreign direct investments in India | Q3 2013
Total investment projects covered: 86
Bangalore emerged as the top draw for foreign corporate investment in India winning 25.5% of all
FDI projects. Its total tally for foreign investment is 23 projects.
The major sectors investing in Bangalore are: Software & IT services with 7 projects; Business
services and the Industrial equipment, machinery sector with 4 projects each.
The State of Karnataka leads the pack for attracting foreign direct investments; followed by
Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh for Q3 2013.
The Software & IT services sector witnessed the most investment activity with a project share of
26%.
North America emerged as the leading source region for corporate foreign investments in India
with 58% followed by Europe with 20% of FDI projects.
The State of California, USA emerged as the top investing source region with a share of 15.1%
Manufacturing dominates as the “leading business activity” for foreign corporate investment into
India with securing 24.4% of all investment activity.

The Top 10 industry sectors attracted
81% of all FDI projects in Q3 2013.
6. Q3 FDI | Top 5 Sectors | Where did they invest in India
Software & IT Services: Bangalore was the clear leader and attracted 31.8% of all foreign direct
investment in this sector with Hyderabad not so far away.
Business Services: Bangalore leads the rankings once again in the Business services sector with
28.5% of all the foreign investment in this sector followed by Pune, Hyderabad, Gurgaon and
Chennai with comparable projects
Industrial Machinery, Equipment & Tools: The State of Karnataka with its capital, Bangalore leads
in attracting FDI from this sector by securing 40% ; trailing behind are Maharashtra & Tamil Nadu
with 20% each.
Automotive components: The strong Automotive clusters, Tamil Nadu and Haryana lead the way
with 2 projects each followed by Maharashtra and Gujarat with 1 project each
Hotels & Tourism: Karnataka and Maharashtra share the honours with 2 projects each
Consumer products: Maharashtra leads with 50% of all foreign investment in this sector.
