For many years Banyan Tree has been the
leading brand of our group, with Angsana
as a secondary brand which has not had
much brand recognition nor market
penetration.
All that is about to change.
Within the short space of several months, a
slew of top-quality resorts will be unveiled,
bearing the Angsana brand.
This July, the Sheraton Grande Laguna
Beach Hotel, for 20 years the largest
resort in our internationally-acclaimed
Laguna Phuket integrated resort, will close
its doors. The hotel will undergo a total
renovation with over US$30 million in
slated improvements. When it re-opens
in December this year with completely
refurbished public areas, restaurants, guest
rooms, and the most “in” beach club on
the island, the Angsana Laguna Phuket
with its 409 keys will set the bar for all
future Angsana resorts.
Angsana Bintan, BanyanTree’s 5-star sister
resort, has just re-opened to widespread
public acclaim after extensive refurbishment
to its 106 rooms and public areas.
Angsana Hangzhou, a new, contemporary
sister to the award-winning Banyan Tree
Hangzhou, will open third quarter 2011.
Its 59 rooms with a “Chinese boutique”
interior design concept will target younger
holiday-goers.
Angsana Balaclava will be a spa-centric
getaway with 50 suites, pool suites and
villa, setting new standards for boutique
spa resorts in Mauritius come late 2011.
CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE
Chairman’s
Message
By mid 2012, the 149 room Angsana
Lang Co – the most luxurious resort in
Central Vietnam after the Banyan Tree
Lang Co – will also open its doors, and
will in many ways, be the most luxurious
Angsana resort with “sky villas” featuring
penthouse rooftop swimming pools and
other pool suites.
These five resorts opening back-to-back
– doubling the number of hotels under
the Angsana brand - mark a new chapter
in our growth.
The BanyanTree brand has also been active.
In May, we celebrated the opening of our
newest hotel – BanyanTree Macau, in the
integrated resort of Galaxy Macau. This
all-suite urban resort features a Relaxation
Pool in every one of its 246 suites and 10
Pool Villas – clearly the most luxurious
resort in Macau.
Elsewhere in China, BanyanTree lays down
more roots. The Banyan Tree Riverside
Shanghai and Banyan Tree Tianjin will
open this year. Hotel construction will
soon begin in Huangshan, Yangshuo,
Lhasa, Nanjing, Chengdu, Chongqing,
Dali, Jiuzhaigou, and more. By 2015, we
expect to be operating some 20 hotels
in China.
We have garnered some 72 international
awards so far this year. This brings our
overall tally to 725 for the group, crossing
the new milestone of 700 – once again
showing strong validation from our guests
of our quality, and continuing value to
our stakeholders.
As for our spas, the growth has been
even faster than our hotels. Our 65th
spa to open – the Banyan Tree Spa at
Marina Bay Sands Singapore – will be
a homecoming, marking a milestone in
our spa operations, probably among the
largest in the world today.

Launched in 2000, Angsana Hotels &
Resorts, the sister brand of Banyan Tree
takes its name from the exotic Angsana
tree, a tall tropical rainforest tree noted
for its crown of golden fragrant flowers
that burst into bloom spontaneously. Its
first resort opened in Bintan, Indonesia.
Coming soon in December 2011, in Phuket,
Thailand, is the flagship Angsana resort.
Angsana Laguna Phuket will be the largest
resort under the Angsana brand with 409
keys. Located within Laguna Phuket, Asia’s
first integrated resort development, it is
just minutes from its multi-award-winning
Banyan Tree counterpart and 20 minutes
by car from Phuket International Airport.

The launch of the hotel follows the closure
of Sheraton Grande Laguna Phuket in June
2011, one of Phuket’s earliest and biggest
luxury hotels. Extensive renovations to

an overhaul of the hotel lobby, rooms,

new and enhanced facilities for families

design, Angsana Laguna Phuket caters to
discerning travellers who seek a vibrant,
active vacation. Warm neutral tones set a

tranquil haven in bustling Macau.
Colonised by the Portuguese in the mid-
16th century, Macau was the first European
settlement in the Pearl River delta.Through
the centuries, foreign ships, traders, and
travellers passed through its shores as
it grew from an important trading post
into the bustling modern entertainment
mecca of today.
New Arrival
One of the peninsula’s latest arrivals is
Banyan Tree Macau, which promises to
provide its guests with a Sanctuary for
the Senses.
Newly unveiled in May 2011, it is Macau’s
first five-star urban resort with indoor
Relaxation Pools in every suite, as well as

Destination Draws
There is so much more to Macau than
just gaming, entertainment venues, and
sprawling malls.
Ties that Bind
A Special Administrative Region of China,
Macau offers a unique juxtaposition of
east and west, old and new. Its historic
centre was recognised by UNESCO as
a World Heritage Cultural Site in 2005.

through its mix of baroque churches,
ancient fortress, cobblestone streets, grand
civic squares, and Art Deco architecture.

traditional Chinese mansions, temples,
and statues dotting the peninsula, as well
as in its distinctive cuisine.

Guia Fort and lighthouse, the 16th-century
A-MaTemple, and bustling Senado Square.

A-Ma Festival on the 23rd day of the third
lunar month, to pray for good luck and
blessings.The Macau International Dragon

conjunction with the traditional Duanwu
Festival around the fifth lunar month.

Tower for the best views during the annual
Macau International Fireworks Display
Contest, which lights up the night skies
with exciting pyrotechnics over five
nights in September 2011. From 17 to
20 November 2011, Macau will host the
annual adrenalin-pumping 58th Macau
Grand Prix, the only street circuit racing
event in which both car and motorcycle
races are held.
Wine and Dine
The Macau Food Festival takes place
around the same time as the Grand Prix,
bringing together a mind-boggling selection
of Asian, European, and local cuisine.
The unique Macanese cuisine is a melting
pot of Portuguese, Chinese, and even
Indian and Malay culinary fares. Rest

Global events of recent years seem not
to have affected the growth and progress
of China, which continues to march on
strongly.
The Ascent
The United Nations World Tourism
Organization (UNWTO) reported that
China welcomed 53 million visitors in
2010, making it the third most-visited
destination worldwide after France and
the United States. It also predicted that
China would be the world’s leading travel
destination by 2018.
There is little wonder why China is one
of the most-visited destinations in the
world – the second largest country in the
world, and also one of the most populated,
China offers an unparalleled selection of
heritage sites and culinary arts alongside its
remarkably diverse culture. Moving from
one place to another, the scene changes
from a secluded monastery tucked atop
remote soaring mountains, to bustling
cities with towering skyscrapers.
Soaring Numbers
Add to the equation a burgeoning middle
class that is eager to travel, both abroad
and within China itself.
China recorded a 21% surge to overtake
France as the fourth biggest tourism spender
in 2009 (UNWTO).As a source market, the

Early Movers
Banyan Tree set roots in China in 2005
with Banyan Tree Ringha, a tranquil
mountain retreat in rustic Shangri-La.
Another opening in the Yunnan Province
soon followed - the multi-award-winning
Banyan Tree Lijiang, in 2006.
These were joined by Banyan Tree Sanya,
HainanIsland(2008);BanyanTreeHangzhou
(2009); Angsana Fuxian Lake, Kunming
(2010); and Banyan Tree Macau (2011).
Adding to the Group’s presence are
BanyanTree Spa Shanghai and standalone
Angsana Spas in cities like Guangzhou
and Shanghai.
Latest Milestone
January 2011 marked the successful closing
of the BanyanTree China Hospitality Fund
(“China Fund”), which is the Group’s first
Renminbi-denominated private equity
fund in China.
The capital commitments for the China
Fund totalled RMB1.07 billion, mostly
invested by high-net-worth individuals
from China, following the successful fund-
raising road show in 2010 to standing-
room-only audiences.
The China Fund, a private equity investment
fund, will primarily make equity investments
in onshore companies undertaking
hospitality projects in China that will be
operated under either the “Banyan Tree”
or the “Angsana” brand.
The Path Ahead
The successful closing of the China Fund
reflects Chinese investors’ confidence,
both in Banyan Tree Group and in the
country’s domestic tourism.
On the part of Banyan Tree, the China
Fund will enable the Group to reinforce
its growing collection of resorts and hotels
in the country.

In 2011, aside from the recent launch of
Banyan Tree Macau, the Group is slated
to open two other hotels in China: Banyan

Hangzhou. More “Banyan Tree”s and
“Angsana”s are also being planted in
China, over the next three years, with
hotel and spa projects in cities likeTianjin,
Jiuzhaigou, Guilin, Nanjing, Chengdu,
and Dunhuang.
Unprecedented opportunities abound
in China. With the fastest urbanisation
rate in history, plus a rising generation of
affluent Chinese middle class, the growth
of its tourism market can only grow from
strength to strength.
FEATURE STORY 1514
The Li people form one of the 56 officially
recognised ethnic groups in China.Amongst
the earliest settlers of Hainan Island, the
Lis recorded their history and culture using
intricate hand-woven textile patterns as
they had no written language.
Interwoven with their heritage, these
traditional textile techniques are at risk
of extinction as the number of skilled
weavers has dwindled significantly over
recent decades.
FROM A TIME LONG GONE
The Li brocade is regarded as the earliest
form of woven textile in China, dating as
far back as 2,500 years.
Historical records show China’s legendary
weaver Huang Daopo acquired her
techniques from the Li women in the 13th
century. Born to a poor family, Huang
was a child bride at 12. She fled her
hometown and lived in Hainan with the
Lis, from whom she learnt weaving and
spinning over some 30 years. When she
returned to her native Songjiang district
in Shanghai, Huang passed on her skills,
marking a crucial point in the development
of the Chinese textile industry.
SPINNING A YARN
Traditional Li textile techniques involve
spinning,dyeing,weavingandembroidering.
Using primitive backstrap looms, the
most distinctive techniques include the
warp ikat and double-sided embroidery,
employing cotton, hemp, and natural dyes.
It takes at least three months to create an
entire costume.
Daughters are taught at a young age by
their mothers through verbal instruction
and demonstration. Each textile pattern
is designed by the Li women by infusing
imagination with their knowledge of
traditional styles.
The textiles play an integral part in
major festivals and occasions, especially
weddings, for which the Li women design
their own dresses.
SAFEGUARDING CULTURE
In the 1950s, there were still 50,000 Li
women engaged in spinning and weaving
as a way of life. 50 years later, fewer than
1,000 know the techniques, with most of
them in their seventies. Causative factors
include limited natural resources, change
in the Lis’ lifestyle with globalisation and
industrialisation with mechanical looms,
all impacting this glorious and ancient
hand art.

Five
Elements
The time-honoured Chinese philosophy of
Wu Xing or “Five Elements” symbolises the
life forces present in all things.Together with
the Yin-Yang balance, the five elemental
energies of Gold, Wood, Water, Fire, and
Earth – form the main roots in traditional
Chinese medicine and wellbeing.
Banyan Tree Spa Shanghai, the Group’s
first spa in China, features a series of
pampering treatments inspired by the Five

comprising shower gel, bath foam, body

treatments.
The Five Elements bath and body care

BanyanTree’s Concept of Sustainability
Sustainability and CSR guidelines provide a
framework for harmonising the constructive
and beneficial outcomes of individual
enterprise with the interests of others.
By pursuing sustainability, firms and
individuals are constrained to internalise
value propositions that help to moderate
their behaviour without the loss of
entrepreneurial efforts.
Under socially responsible operational
guidelines, free market risk and reward
are kept in a more sustainable balance. It
is a check and balance decision making
process for businesses by requiring business
to address the triple bottom line:
a.	The economic bottom-line refers to an
emphasis on financial performance,
not only to long term profit but to the
philosophiesbehindacompany’sstrategy
or behaviour, the sustainability of its
businesses and its “human capital.”
b.	The environmental bottom-line refers
to the impact of a company’s products
or operations on the environment,
plus the nature of its consumption
and emissions and how the company
is dealing with both.
c.	The social bottom-line refers to how
a company approaches issues such as
cultural, ethnic and gender diversity;
working hours and wages; staff security;
and the company’s contribution to
community services and facilities.
Actualising a Sustainability Mindset
In 2007, Banyan Tree rolled out three
group wide external initiatives, Resource
Conservation, Greening Communities,
and Seedlings.
Resource Conservation
This group wide initiative seeks to monitor
and reduce operational impacts of our
resorts and hotels on the environment.
Specifically, we seek to reduce energy
consumption, potable water consumption,
and the amount of waste sent to landfill
at each location. Achievements are
benchmarked against the industry and
externally certified through the EarthCheck
program.
Greening Communities
Our resorts have been tasked to plant 2000
new trees per year while working with
local community members, associates, and
guests to create a wider impact by raising
awareness. While this effort may enhance
Meaning, companies must consider
the quality of their relationships with
stakeholders- customers, employees,
shareholders, creditors, suppliers, society
as a whole, and our global ecosystems.
A triple bottom-line approach requires
companies to measure and enhance
those relationships on a continuous and
transparent basis in order to create value for
stakeholders. In the long run a company’s
stakeholder relationships are intangible
assets which contribute to the company’s
very tangible capitalisation value.
Conservation,
Greening and

Sustainability the
Banyan Tree Way
the air qualities globally and beautify
locations while reducing the negative
ecological impacts of human activity,
its main purpose is to raise awareness of
climate change and the importance of
environmental conservation, especially
within developing communities.
From 2007 through 2010, Banyan Tree
has planted 96,673 trees across Thailand,
China, Indonesia, Maldives, Australia,
Laos, Mexico, and Seychelles. The effort
continues to be rolled out as more resorts
open.
Seedlings
This group wide initiative aims to support
at-risk young people aged between 12 and
18 by harnessing the core competencies
of our hotels. A three-phase program,
Seedlings provides: trained Banyan Tree
volunteers for 6 year Mentorships with
marginalised youths, Scholarships to
enable continued educations, and finally
2-year paid Internships within the hotel to
give valuable work experience once the
young person makes the adult decision
to enter the workforce.
By the end of 2010, 11 resorts had launched
the effort, translating to:
• 12 internal mentor trainers, trained by
University of Wales to conduct trainer
sessions
• 46 total young people under mentorship
and scholarship
• 46 active mentors (all Banyan Tree
or Angsana associates) and 43 more
mentors already trained and ready to
work with young people

All that is about to change. Within the short space of several months, a slew of top-quality resorts will be unveiled, bearing the Angsana brand. This July, the Sheraton Grande Laguna Beach Hotel, for 20 years the largest resort in our internationally-acclaimed Laguna Phuket integrated resort, will close its doors. The hotel will undergo a total renovation with over US$30 million in slated improvements. When it re-opens in December this year with completely refurbished public areas, restaurants, guest rooms, and the most “in” beach club on the island, the Angsana Laguna Phuket with its 409 keys will set the bar for all future Angsana resorts. Angsana Bintan, BanyanTree’s 5-star sister resort, has just re-opened to widespread public acclaim after extensive refurbishment to its 106 rooms and public areas. Angsana Hangzhou, a new, contemporary sister to the award-winning Banyan Tree Hangzhou, will open third quarter 2011. Its 59 rooms with a “Chinese boutique” interior design concept will target younger holiday-goers. Angsana Balaclava will be a spa-centric getaway with 50 suites, pool suites and villa, setting new standards for boutique spa resorts in Mauritius come late 2011. CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE Chairman’s Message By mid 2012, the 149 room Angsana Lang Co – the most luxurious resort in Central Vietnam after the Banyan Tree Lang Co – will also open its doors, and will in many ways, be the most luxurious Angsana resort with “sky villas” featuring penthouse rooftop swimming pools and other pool suites. These five resorts opening back-to-back – doubling the number of hotels under the Angsana brand - mark a new chapter in our growth. The BanyanTree brand has also been active. In May, we celebrated the opening of our newest hotel – BanyanTree Macau, in the integrated resort of Galaxy Macau. This all-suite urban resort features a Relaxation Pool in every one of its 246 suites and 10 Pool Villas – clearly the most luxurious resort in Macau. Elsewhere in China, BanyanTree lays down more roots. The Banyan Tree Riverside Shanghai and Banyan Tree Tianjin will open this year. Hotel construction will soon begin in Huangshan, Yangshuo, Lhasa, Nanjing, Chengdu, Chongqing, Dali, Jiuzhaigou, and more. By 2015, we expect to be operating some 20 hotels in China. We have garnered some 72 international awards so far this year. This brings our overall tally to 725 for the group, crossing the new milestone of 700 – once again showing strong validation from our guests of our quality, and continuing value to our stakeholders. As for our spas, the growth has been even faster than our hotels. Our 65th spa to open – the Banyan Tree Spa at Marina Bay Sands Singapore – will be a homecoming, marking a milestone in our spa operations, probably among the largest in the world today. Ho Kwon Ping Executive Chairman 08 Angsana Bintan 32
  • 3. Launched in 2000, Angsana Hotels & Resorts, the sister brand of Banyan Tree takes its name from the exotic Angsana tree, a tall tropical rainforest tree noted for its crown of golden fragrant flowers that burst into bloom spontaneously. Its first resort opened in Bintan, Indonesia. Coming soon in December 2011, in Phuket, Thailand, is the flagship Angsana resort. Angsana Laguna Phuket will be the largest resort under the Angsana brand with 409 keys. Located within Laguna Phuket, Asia’s first integrated resort development, it is just minutes from its multi-award-winning Banyan Tree counterpart and 20 minutes by car from Phuket International Airport. Fresh Beginnings The launch of the hotel follows the closure of Sheraton Grande Laguna Phuket in June 2011, one of Phuket’s earliest and biggest luxury hotels. Extensive renovations to the sum of US$30 million will be carried out as part of the works, which includes an overhaul of the hotel lobby, rooms, restaurants, meeting facilities, as well as new and enhanced facilities for families with young children. Infused with a contemporary stylish design, Angsana Laguna Phuket caters to discerning travellers who seek a vibrant, active vacation. Warm neutral tones set a soothing backdrop, accented with deep, sensual shades of purple and orange. Youngsters will have a ball of a time at the tree house-inspired, double-storey Kids’ Club. It also features a relaxation corner for parents to enjoy a drink or two while waiting, that is, provided they are not somewhere else – perhaps enjoying an intimate couple massage at Angsana Spa! • 5. Jewel in the Delta Banyan Tree Macau welcomes you to a tranquil haven in bustling Macau TOP STORY Banyan Tree Macau welcomes you to a tranquil haven in bustling Macau. Colonised by the Portuguese in the mid- 16th century, Macau was the first European settlement in the Pearl River delta.Through the centuries, foreign ships, traders, and travellers passed through its shores as it grew from an important trading post into the bustling modern entertainment mecca of today. New Arrival One of the peninsula’s latest arrivals is Banyan Tree Macau, which promises to provide its guests with a Sanctuary for the Senses. Newly unveiled in May 2011, it is Macau’s first five-star urban resort with indoor Relaxation Pools in every suite, as well as pool villas that come with private pools and air-conditioned cabanas. Banyan Tree Macau is situated within the brand-new integrated resort Galaxy Macau in Cotai City, a sliver of reclaimed land connecting the islands of Taipa and Coloane. Leisure, entertainment, and relaxation options abound. BanyanTree Macau offers easy access to over 50 dining, gaming and entertainment facilities within the 550,000-square-metre Galaxy Macau. Sanctuary for the Senses If you need to take a breather from the adrenalin rush and excitement, simply retreat to one of Banyan Tree Macau’s suites or pool villas. All 227 suites – Grand Cotai Suite, Grand Macau Suite, Spa Suite, and Presidential Suite – come with an inviting Relaxation Pool that is best complemented with some freshly popped champagne as you take in the views of this all-suite hotel. At the 30th floor, step into the double-storey Presidential Suite, where breathtaking panoramic views of Cotai Strip greet you. Spread over 670 square metres, the Presidential Suite comes with everything that a family or a small group of friends would need for an engaging retreat: two bedrooms, an indoor Relaxation Pool, dining room, fully-fitted kitchen, and a dedicated gaming room. After hours of non-stop shopping or gaming at the tables, a massage is definitely on the cards. There’s always Banyan Tree’s award- winning spa, but if you prefer to stay in total privacy, the Spa Suite would be perfect for you. Within this 130-square- metre haven stands a private treatment room, where couples can indulge in a rejuvenating spa massage. Up the ante with the Sanctuary Pool Villa, which also comes with its own spa treatment room – this on top of a private outdoor pool, a landscaped garden, a living area, and a gourmet kitchen. Extending over 950 square metres, the expansive two-bedroom villa is ideal for families and friends. Additionally, a Resort Host is appointed to each of the six Sanctuary Pool Villas. Guests can count on their personal Resort Host (contactable 24 hours a day, 7 days a week via mobile phone) for a worry- free holiday. Craving a freshly prepared omelette for breakfast in the garden? • 8. Global events of recent years seem not to have affected the growth and progress of China, which continues to march on strongly. The Ascent The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) reported that China welcomed 53 million visitors in 2010, making it the third most-visited destination worldwide after France and the United States. It also predicted that China would be the world’s leading travel destination by 2018. There is little wonder why China is one of the most-visited destinations in the world – the second largest country in the world, and also one of the most populated, China offers an unparalleled selection of heritage sites and culinary arts alongside its remarkably diverse culture. Moving from one place to another, the scene changes from a secluded monastery tucked atop remote soaring mountains, to bustling cities with towering skyscrapers. Soaring Numbers Add to the equation a burgeoning middle class that is eager to travel, both abroad and within China itself. China recorded a 21% surge to overtake France as the fourth biggest tourism spender in 2009 (UNWTO).As a source market, the Chinese taking foreign trips is expected to Journey Through The Middle Kingdom Did You Know? • That there are 56 officially recognised ethnic groups in China • China was closed to foreign tourism between 1949 and 1974 • As of 2010, there are 40World HeritageSitesrecognisedbythe United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) • China is one of the top three countries with the greatest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites continue to grow at a phenomenal pace, potentially surpassing Germany as the top outbound travel market worldwide. Early Movers Banyan Tree set roots in China in 2005 with Banyan Tree Ringha, a tranquil mountain retreat in rustic Shangri-La. Another opening in the Yunnan Province soon followed - the multi-award-winning Banyan Tree Lijiang, in 2006. These were joined by Banyan Tree Sanya, HainanIsland(2008);BanyanTreeHangzhou (2009); Angsana Fuxian Lake, Kunming (2010); and Banyan Tree Macau (2011). Adding to the Group’s presence are BanyanTree Spa Shanghai and standalone Angsana Spas in cities like Guangzhou and Shanghai. Latest Milestone January 2011 marked the successful closing of the BanyanTree China Hospitality Fund (“China Fund”), which is the Group’s first Renminbi-denominated private equity fund in China. The capital commitments for the China Fund totalled RMB1.07 billion, mostly invested by high-net-worth individuals from China, following the successful fund- raising road show in 2010 to standing- room-only audiences. The China Fund, a private equity investment fund, will primarily make equity investments in onshore companies undertaking hospitality projects in China that will be operated under either the “Banyan Tree” or the “Angsana” brand. The Path Ahead The successful closing of the China Fund reflects Chinese investors’ confidence, both in Banyan Tree Group and in the country’s domestic tourism. On the part of Banyan Tree, the China Fund will enable the Group to reinforce its growing collection of resorts and hotels in the country. Banyan Tree Lijiang Banyan Tree Macau Banyan Tree Ringha Banyan Tree Sanya Banyan Tree Hangzhou In 2011, aside from the recent launch of Banyan Tree Macau, the Group is slated to open two other hotels in China: Banyan Tree Riverside in Shanghai and Angsana Hangzhou. More “Banyan Tree”s and “Angsana”s are also being planted in China, over the next three years, with hotel and spa projects in cities likeTianjin, Jiuzhaigou, Guilin, Nanjing, Chengdu, and Dunhuang. Unprecedented opportunities abound in China. With the fastest urbanisation rate in history, plus a rising generation of affluent Chinese middle class, the growth of its tourism market can only grow from strength to strength. FEATURE STORY 1514
  • 9. The Li people form one of the 56 officially recognised ethnic groups in China.Amongst the earliest settlers of Hainan Island, the Lis recorded their history and culture using intricate hand-woven textile patterns as they had no written language. Interwoven with their heritage, these traditional textile techniques are at risk of extinction as the number of skilled weavers has dwindled significantly over recent decades. FROM A TIME LONG GONE The Li brocade is regarded as the earliest form of woven textile in China, dating as far back as 2,500 years. Historical records show China’s legendary weaver Huang Daopo acquired her techniques from the Li women in the 13th century. Born to a poor family, Huang was a child bride at 12. She fled her hometown and lived in Hainan with the Lis, from whom she learnt weaving and spinning over some 30 years. When she returned to her native Songjiang district in Shanghai, Huang passed on her skills, marking a crucial point in the development of the Chinese textile industry. SPINNING A YARN Traditional Li textile techniques involve spinning, dyeing, weavingandembroidering. Using primitive backstrap looms, the most distinctive techniques include the warp ikat and double-sided embroidery, employing cotton, hemp, and natural dyes. It takes at least three months to create an entire costume. Daughters are taught at a young age by their mothers through verbal instruction and demonstration. Each textile pattern is designed by the Li women by infusing imagination with their knowledge of traditional styles. The textiles play an integral part in major festivals and occasions, especially weddings, for which the Li women design their own dresses. SAFEGUARDING CULTURE In the 1950s, there were still 50,000 Li women engaged in spinning and weaving as a way of life. 50 years later, fewer than 1,000 know the techniques, with most of them in their seventies. Causative factors include limited natural resources, change in the Lis’ lifestyle with globalisation and industrialisation with mechanical looms, all impacting this glorious and ancient hand art. A Stitch In Time Banyan Tree and Angsana Gallery to open in new destinations Five Elements The time-honoured Chinese philosophy of Wu Xing or “Five Elements” symbolises the life forces present in all things.Together with the Yin-Yang balance, the five elemental energies of Gold, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth – form the main roots in traditional Chinese medicine and wellbeing. Banyan Tree Spa Shanghai, the Group’s first spa in China, features a series of pampering treatments inspired by the Five Elements concept. In 2011, Banyan Tree Gallery launched a range of toiletries – comprising shower gel, bath foam, body scrub, and body lotion – based on these treatments. The Five Elements bath and body care collection is available at Banyan Tree Gallery shops in Singapore, Banyan Tree resorts in Bangkok and Phuket, Thailand; Bintan, Indonesia; the Maldives; Riviera Maya and Acapulco, Mexico; and the Seychelles. These will be complemented by the Five Elements hair care products, to be launched in the second half of 2011. Yo u m ay a l s o s h o p o n l i n e a t : banyantreegallery.com. BanyanTree’s Concept of Sustainability Sustainability and CSR guidelines provide a framework for harmonising the constructive and beneficial outcomes of individual enterprise with the interests of others. By pursuing sustainability, firms and individuals are constrained to internalise value propositions that help to moderate their behaviour without the loss of entrepreneurial efforts. Under socially responsible operational guidelines, free market risk and reward are kept in a more sustainable balance. It is a check and balance decision making process for businesses by requiring business to address the triple bottom line: a. The economic bottom-line refers to an emphasis on financial performance, not only to long term profit but to the philosophiesbehindacompany’sstrategy or behaviour, the sustainability of its businesses and its “human capital.” b. The environmental bottom-line refers to the impact of a company’s products or operations on the environment, plus the nature of its consumption and emissions and how the company is dealing with both. c. The social bottom-line refers to how a company approaches issues such as cultural, ethnic and gender diversity; working hours and wages; staff security; and the company’s contribution to community services and facilities. Actualising a Sustainability Mindset In 2007, Banyan Tree rolled out three group wide external initiatives, Resource Conservation, Greening Communities, and Seedlings. Resource Conservation This group wide initiative seeks to monitor and reduce operational impacts of our resorts and hotels on the environment. Specifically, we seek to reduce energy consumption, potable water consumption, and the amount of waste sent to landfill at each location. Achievements are benchmarked against the industry and externally certified through the EarthCheck program. Greening Communities Our resorts have been tasked to plant 2000 new trees per year while working with local community members, associates, and guests to create a wider impact by raising awareness. While this effort may enhance Meaning, companies must consider the quality of their relationships with stakeholders- customers, employees, shareholders, creditors, suppliers, society as a whole, and our global ecosystems. A triple bottom-line approach requires companies to measure and enhance those relationships on a continuous and transparent basis in order to create value for stakeholders. In the long run a company’s stakeholder relationships are intangible assets which contribute to the company’s very tangible capitalisation value. Conservation, Greening and Mentorship Sustainability the Banyan Tree Way the air qualities globally and beautify locations while reducing the negative ecological impacts of human activity, its main purpose is to raise awareness of climate change and the importance of environmental conservation, especially within developing communities. From 2007 through 2010, Banyan Tree has planted 96,673 trees across Thailand, China, Indonesia, Maldives, Australia, Laos, Mexico, and Seychelles. The effort continues to be rolled out as more resorts open. A three-phase program, Seedlings provides: trained Banyan Tree volunteers for 6 year Mentorships with marginalised youths, Scholarships to enable continued educations, and finally 2-year paid Internships within the hotel to give valuable work experience once the young person makes the adult decision to enter the workforce.
