CHARACTERS BETWEEN RICHARD AND GUS. RICHARD IS A TEENAGE BOY AGED 15 FROM KNIGHT’S FAMILY. WHILE GUS IS THE ELDEST SON. IN THIS
NOVEL, THERE ARE SITUATIONS WHERE RICHARD AND GUS HAVE DIFFERENT CHARACTERISTICS.
FIRST OF ALL, RICHARD AND GUS ARE CONTRAST BETWEEN EACH OTHER. RICHARD TRIED TO MIX WITH THE FAMILY MEMBERS IN HUNTING
BUT HE COULD NOT AFFORD TO KILL INNOCENT CREATURES AS HE THINKS NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO TAKE ONE’S LIFE. THAT MEANS, HE JOINS THE
FAMILY HUNTING FOR THE SAKE OF SPENDING TIME TOGETHER BUT NOT TO DO THE KILLING. FOR EXAMPLE, WHEN THEY GO FOR HUNTING, HE
PURPOSELY MISSES THE BUCK AS HE HAS HIS OWN VIEWS ON HUNTING. WHILE GUS LOVE TO HUNT. HE FITS IN WITH HIS FAMILY BECAUSE IT HAS
BEEN THE FAMILY TRADITION SINCE HIS GRANDFATHER’S TIME. HE ALSO DOES NOT FEEL SYMPATHY TOWARDS THE ANIMAL.
BESIDES THAT, RICHARD AND GUS HAVE DIFFERENT INTEREST. RICHARD LOVES TO WRITE POEM. AT FIRST, RICHARD AFRAID TO SPEAK OUT
ABOUT HIS INTEREST. AT LAST AFTER GETTING INSPIRED BY MR. KILMER, RICHARD IS MORE CONFIDENT WITH HIS POETRY. WHILE GUS IS
INTERESTING IN BASKETBALL. HE HAD INVITED TO JOIN SPORTS BUT RICHARD REFUSED. HE ALSO TOLD RICHARD THAT POETRY’S FOR SISSIES. HE
THINKS ALMOST ENGLISH POETS LET THEIR HAIR GROW LONG AND CURLY. FURTHERMORE, HE THINKS WRITING POEM IS A WASTING TIME AND DOES
NOT GIVE ANY BENEFITS.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST, RICHARD AND GUS HAVE THEIR OWN OPINION ABOUT THE SCHERMERS. FOR INSTANCE, HE IS THE ONLY ONE IN HIS
CLASS TO SIGN THE CARD PREPARED BY MRS. HANSEN. ALTHOUGH THE REST OF THE CLASSMATES ARE AFRAID OF THE THREAT FROM THE
TROUBLEMAKERS, RICHARD STILL SIGNS THE CARD. THIS IS BECAUSE THE CARD IS TO SHOW SYMPATHY AND SOLIDARITY TOWARDS HANNAH AND
THE SCHERMER’S FAMILY AFTER THEIR TAVERN IS VANDALIZED. IN THE NAME OF HUMANITY, HE UNDERSTANDS THEIR SITUATION WELL. WHILE GUS

THAT TIME, INITED STATES HAD DECLARED WAR ON GERMAN. GUS TRIED TO TREAT RICHARD TO TELL THEIR FATHER IF HE FOLLOW HANNAH
DECISION TO PULL THE ROLE AS A DOUGHBOY AND LADY LIBERTY IN A PATRIOTIC PROGRAMME.
IN CONCLUSION, EVERYONE HAS THEIR OWN CHARACTERISTICS JUST LIKE RICHARD AND GUS. ABOVE ALL, PEOPLE HAVE THEIR OWN

  • 5. FULL ESSAYBASED ON THE NOVEL DEAR MR. KILMER BY ANNE SCHRAFF, EVERY CHILD IS DIFFERENT. THIS STATEMENT IS POTRAYED THROUGH THE CHARACTERS BETWEEN RICHARD AND GUS. RICHARD IS A TEENAGE BOY AGED 15 FROM KNIGHT’S FAMILY. WHILE GUS IS THE ELDEST SON. IN THIS NOVEL, THERE ARE SITUATIONS WHERE RICHARD AND GUS HAVE DIFFERENT CHARACTERISTICS. FIRST OF ALL, RICHARD AND GUS ARE CONTRAST BETWEEN EACH OTHER. RICHARD TRIED TO MIX WITH THE FAMILY MEMBERS IN HUNTING BUT HE COULD NOT AFFORD TO KILL INNOCENT CREATURES AS HE THINKS NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO TAKE ONE’S LIFE. THAT MEANS, HE JOINS THE FAMILY HUNTING FOR THE SAKE OF SPENDING TIME TOGETHER BUT NOT TO DO THE KILLING. FOR EXAMPLE, WHEN THEY GO FOR HUNTING, HE PURPOSELY MISSES THE BUCK AS HE HAS HIS OWN VIEWS ON HUNTING. WHILE GUS LOVE TO HUNT. HE FITS IN WITH HIS FAMILY BECAUSE IT HAS BEEN THE FAMILY TRADITION SINCE HIS GRANDFATHER’S TIME. HE ALSO DOES NOT FEEL SYMPATHY TOWARDS THE ANIMAL. BESIDES THAT, RICHARD AND GUS HAVE DIFFERENT INTEREST. RICHARD LOVES TO WRITE POEM. AT FIRST, RICHARD AFRAID TO SPEAK OUT ABOUT HIS INTEREST. AT LAST AFTER GETTING INSPIRED BY MR. KILMER, RICHARD IS MORE CONFIDENT WITH HIS POETRY. WHILE GUS IS INTERESTING IN BASKETBALL. HE HAD INVITED TO JOIN SPORTS BUT RICHARD REFUSED. HE ALSO TOLD RICHARD THAT POETRY’S FOR SISSIES. HE THINKS ALMOST ENGLISH POETS LET THEIR HAIR GROW LONG AND CURLY. FURTHERMORE, HE THINKS WRITING POEM IS A WASTING TIME AND DOES NOT GIVE ANY BENEFITS. LAST BUT NOT LEAST, RICHARD AND GUS HAVE THEIR OWN OPINION ABOUT THE SCHERMERS. FOR INSTANCE, HE IS THE ONLY ONE IN HIS CLASS TO SIGN THE CARD PREPARED BY MRS. HANSEN. ALTHOUGH THE REST OF THE CLASSMATES ARE AFRAID OF THE THREAT FROM THE TROUBLEMAKERS, RICHARD STILL SIGNS THE CARD. THIS IS BECAUSE THE CARD IS TO SHOW SYMPATHY AND SOLIDARITY TOWARDS HANNAH AND THE SCHERMER’S FAMILY AFTER THEIR TAVERN IS VANDALIZED. IN THE NAME OF HUMANITY, HE UNDERSTANDS THEIR SITUATION WELL. WHILE GUS HATE THE SCHERMERS BECAUSE HE THINK THE SCHERMERS ARE GERMAN SPIES. GUS ALSO ANGRY TOWARDS RICHARD BECAUSE RICHARD HAD SIGNED THE CARD TO THE SCHERMERS WHEN NOBODY ELSE WOULD NOT. HE ALSO HATE SCHERMERS BECAUSE THEY CAME FROM GERMAN. AT THAT TIME, INITED STATES HAD DECLARED WAR ON GERMAN. GUS TRIED TO TREAT RICHARD TO TELL THEIR FATHER IF HE FOLLOW HANNAH DECISION TO PULL THE ROLE AS A DOUGHBOY AND LADY LIBERTY IN A PATRIOTIC PROGRAMME. IN CONCLUSION, EVERYONE HAS THEIR OWN CHARACTERISTICS JUST LIKE RICHARD AND GUS. ABOVE ALL, PEOPLE HAVE THEIR OWN JUDGEMENT IN WHAT THEY WANT TO GET INVOLVE SUCH AS HUNTING, POET AND HUMANITY. SO, DON’T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER.
