- Welcome. This presentation outlines how to facilitate e-learning in the Cultural Points of View online course. A Learner Guide and a two-part Facilitator Guide are also available.
- To access the online course go to the web address. Because it’s your first time you need to create an account. Click on Create New Account, fill in the online form and click on Create New Account. You will receive an email. Click on the link.
- This will re-direct you to the site so that you can enrol in the Cultural Points of View Click on Enrol Me in this course The enrolment key is CPOV
- Your first activity is to run a short video Make No Assumptions which will sets the scene for your learning. There are six sections in the online component full of resources and activities.
- In this introductory section we direct you to a series of resources which we encourage you to explore and become familiar with before you do any of the activities.
- You will see these icons throughout the site. They are there to help you navigate; to identify activities and assessments; and to indicate when you reach the end of a topic. Importantly in this introductory section you can access a discussion forum where you can ask questions about the topics or if you have any technical questions, you can also ask those in here. All you need to do is click on the link
- Then you click on Add a new discussion topic, type in your question and click on Post to Forum. Your trainer or another member of the project team will answer your question within 24 hours. If you have urgent technical questions you can contact Ann Brady, but only during business hours – otherwise please post to the forum. Ann will receive an email alert everytime a question is posted and will reply as soon as she can. The advantage of this method is that everyone sees the question and everyone sees the answer. You can be quite sure that if you are finding something difficult that your colleagues feel the same – so don’t be shy about participating here. We call this a discussion thread which means that you ask a question, I respond, Chris responds, and then you respond to Chris – it’s an online conversation – a discussion thread. Pages 14-17 of your learner guide will help you – please make sure that you have read the learner guide before you ask for technical help.
- The first activity is very straight forward – all you need to do is click on each of the pictures and listen to what the speakers have to say about Aboriginal culture. The videos are very short, less than 2 minutes each.
- When you see this symbol you know that this is an activity. All we want you to do is think about what were the main points that each speaker made. When you have had a think, click on each of these images and compare what you thought with what we think!
- In section 2 we ask you again to watch four videos – these focus on traditional aspects of Aboriginal culture. There are transcripts available if you prefer to read. Then we ask you to answer some questions about what you have heard. Instructions on how to participate in the quiz are on pages 26-27 of your learner guide. Then we ask you to consider cultural diversity more broadly and provide you with some ideas and definitions before we ask you what you think cultural diversity is. That question is answered in a discussion forum – the same way that you were able to ask questions of your trainer or for technical help.
- The next activity is also a discussion. But this time you can choose whether you type your responses or whether you record them. We encourage you to record them. To do so you will need a headset with a microphone (show them). You can buy one from Officeworks, Dick Smith, Harvey Norman or anywhere which sells computer accessories for about $20. This is called a Voicethread – similar to the written discussion thread we spoke about earlier, except that you can use your voice. The computer records your response. To hear that response, all I have to do is click on your icon (outside the main pic) and I can hear your voice or see what you have written. So, in this activity we will present you with a couple of case studies and ask you to answer some questions. Instructions on how to participate are on pages 18-25 of your learner guide.
- The next section discusses legislation and SES policy in the context of your role as an SES volunteer or staff member. The topic is racial discrimination and we ask you to consider two questions and provide you with some resources to help you answer the questions. The questions are in another discussion forum.
- Your final activity is two short answer questions. You can choose to write or record your answer using this simple voice recorder. All you have to do is click on Record, speak into your microphone and save your recording at the end. So we hope that we’ve provided a variety of activities and a range of different but simple ways for you to respond. This environment is designed to function online. When you participate in an online environment such as this you have the benefit of learning from your peers in much the same way you do in a face to face setting like this one. You can “talk” to each other – i.e. Read what your colleagues say, voice your opinions and debate your answers. Is there anyone who cannot access the internet? If yes, give them a CD but tell them that they will miss out on all the collaborative activities, that it will be a much more isolating experience – much better to take the trip to the SES or the college and learn online.
