There are two main types of living cells: animal cells and plant cells. Both contain a nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, mitochondria, and ribosomes. Plant cells also contain a cell wall and chloroplasts. The nucleus controls the cell and contains genetic material. The cytoplasm carries out most chemical processes under enzymatic control. The cell membrane regulates movement of substances into and out of the cell. Mitochondria generate energy through respiration and ribosomes perform protein synthesis. Plant cells have a cell wall that strengthens the cell and chloroplasts that contain chlorophyll to absorb light energy for photosynthesis.
