2. The Background We Are Ohio is preparing to hit the pavement to begin collecting the necessary signatures to give Ohioans the opportunity to exercise a citizens’ veto of SB 5 - the unfair attack on workers' rights. On Friday April 1, 2011, SB 5 was filed with the Ohio Secretary of State's office. The 90-day clock has begun to tick and We Are Ohio will have to collect 231,149 valid signatures to put the issue on the ballot in November. On Monday, April 4, 2011, the We Are Ohio filed nearly three times the required signatures to accompany our proposed petition summaries. 2
3. Our Goals Collect in excess of the 231,147 minimum necessary valid signatures statewide. Collect in excess of the 3% of 2010 voters in at least 44 counties. Maintain and build public support for November’s citizens’ veto vote. Build our organizational capacity to effect election outcomes, like referendums, levies and elections for local, state and federal offices. 3
4. Talking Points “We Are Ohio” is a citizen-driven, bipartisan, broad-based grassroots coalition that is growing by the minute. “We Are Ohio” is comprised of Ohioans—Republicans and Democrats— private and public sector workers, unions, small business owners, pastors and religious leaders, a wide array of progressive organizations, students, and others. SB5 is an attack on working and middle-class families and will hurt our local economy. SB5 does not create one job. It will mean fewer teachers in the classroom for our children, fewer police and firefighters on our streets keeping us safe, and fewer nurses tending to our sick, our children, and our elderly parents and grandparents. 4
