1. On Upright Conscience and Integrity of Life:
The Pope Speaks to the Youth!
Glimpses on Pope Francis' Homilies and Reflections
during the WYD 2013 in Rio de Janeiro
2. Homily at the National Shrine of Our Lady of
Conception in Aparecida (July 24, 2013)
In Mary,
the Church learns true
discipleship!
3. Three Simple Attitudes:
a. Hopefulness
Scenario: Our young people feel attracted by many idols which take the place of
God and appear to offer hope: money, success, power and pleasure.
“Let us be lights of hope! Let us maintain a positive outlook
on reality. Let us encourage the generosity which is typical
of the young and help them to work actively in building a
better world. Young people are a powerful engine for the
Church and for society. They do not need material things
alone; they need to have held up to them those non-
material values which are the spiritual heart of the-
Christian faith: spirituality, generosity, solidarity,
perseverance, fraternity, joy
4. b. Openness to being surprised by God
“God always saves the best for us. But he asks us
to let ourselves be surprised by his love, to accept his
surprises. Let us trust God!”
c. Living in joy
“Christians are joyful, they
are never gloomy. God is at
our side. Christians cannot
be pessimists!”
5. Pope's Address to Argentinian Youth July 26, 2013
What do we
expect as a
consequence of
the WYD?
“I expect a mess. There will be one! I want people to
go out! I want the Church to go out to the street! I want
us to defend ourselves against everything that is
worldliness, comfortableness & clericalism, that is
being shut-in in ourselves.
The Church can’t be an NGO!!!”
6. Scenario: This global civilization has gone too far!
The worship of the god-money is such!
Problems:
a. the elderly are not looked
after & are not allowed to speak
& act.
b. the exclusion of young
people- without work and
unemployment are very high!
7. Challenge:
Take care of the two extremes of life!
The elderly and the young!
“Young people must go out, they must show their
worth. Young people must go out to fight for values, to
fight for values! And oldsters must open their mouth;
the elderly must open their mouth and teach us,
transmitting to us the wisdom of the nations.”
8. Don’t liquefy faith in Jesus Christ!
There is orange milk shake, apple milk shake, banana milkshake,
but please, don’t take liquefied faith! The faith is whole, it’s not to
be liquefied. It is faith in Jesus. It is faith in the Son of God made
man, who loved me and died for me. Faith in Jesus Christ isn’t a
joke, it’s something very serious, it’s a scandal.
9. Pope's Welcome Address in Copacabana- July 26, 2013
Question of Jesus:
Do you want to be my disciple? Do you want to be my
friend? Do you want to be a witness to my Gospel?
“ Put on faith!”
… the train has arrived
at Rio de Janeiro.
The World Youth Day 20013
is an immense feast of faith!
10. Pope's Homily During the World Youth Day Prayer
Service in Copacabana- July 26, 2013
What can we do?
Put on Faith!
“When we prepare a plate of food and we see that it needs salt,
well, we “put on” salt; when it needs oil, then you “put on” oil.
….And so it is in our life young friends…to have real meaning and
fulfillment…. “Put on faith”, and your life will take on a new flavor, it
will have a compass to show you the way; “put on hope” and every
one of your days will be enlightened and your horizon will no
longer be dark, but luminous; “put on love”, and your life will be
like a house built on rock, your journey will be joyful, because
you will find many friends to journey with you. Put on faith, put on
hope, put on love!”
11. Concretely, what does this mean?
Christ awaits you in his Word;
listen carefully to him and your
heart will be warmed by his presence.
Christ awaits you in the sacrament of Penance,
to heal by his mercy the wounds caused by sin.
Christ is waiting for you in his flesh in the
Eucharist, in the language of charity, goodness
and service.
12. Pope's Address During Stations of the Cross in Copacabana
- July 27, 2013
Entrusting the Cross of Jesus
to the Youth!
“to carry it
throughout the
world as a
symbol of
Christ’s love for
humanity"
13. Jesus is carrying the Cross with the Young!
With the Cross, Jesus unites himself to the silence of
the victims of violence, those who can no longer cry
out, especially the innocent and the defenseless…
With the Cross, he is united to families in trouble, and
those who mourn the tragic loss of their children
14. On the Cross, Jesus is united with every person who
suffers from hunger in a world…
On the Cross, Jesus is united to the many mothers and
fathers who suffer as they see their children become victims of
drug-induced euphoria…
15. On the Cross, Jesus is united with those who are persecuted for
their religion, for their beliefs or simply for the color of their skin…
On the Cross, Jesus is united with so many young
people who have lost faith in political institutions,
because they see in them only selfishness and
corruption;
16. Jesus unites himself with those young people who have
lost faith in the Church, or even in God because of the
counter-witness of Christians and ministers of the Gospel.
17. What can we get from our
experience of the Cross?
“It gives us a treasure that no one else can
give: the certainty of the faithful love which
God has for us. The Cross of Christ
contains all the love of God!”
18. Challenge:
Help the One carrying the Cross!
“It teaches us always to look
upon others with mercy and
tenderness, especially those
who suffer, who are in need
of help, who need a word or
a concrete action; the Cross
invites us to step outside
ourselves to meet them and
to extend a hand to them.”
19. Pope's Homily at Closing Mass of World Youth Day
at Copacabana Beach -July 28, 2013
“Jesus is calling you to be a disciple with
a mission!”
Three simple ideas:
Go, do not be afraid, and serve!
20. Go!!!
“Faith is a flame that grows stronger the more it is
shared and passed on, so that everyone may know, love
and confess Jesus Christ, the Lord of life and history.”
The best tool for evangelizing the young:
Another young person!
21. Do not be afraid!!!
“We are sent together. Be aware of the
companionship of the whole Church and
also the communion of the saints on this
mission. When we face challenges
together, then we are strong.”
Serve!!!
“This should be the song of our life. It is
allowing our life to be identified with that
of Jesus, it is sharing his sentiments, his
thoughts, his actions. And the life of
Jesus is a life for others. It is a life of
service.”

values

Don't liquefy faith in Jesus!
Put on faith: new flavor, compass, be enlightened, be
built on rock, joyful
