Outcomes of the Deliberations and Discussions in the
Conference
The Summit acted as catalyst to initiate and decimate knowledge and industry oriented
topics with key industry trends and blazing issues been addressed in the interest of Food
Processing and as a marketplace for the new products and Technologies to be showcased
to this sector.
Inaugural Session
Dr. Rajeev Singh, Director General, Indian Chamber of Commerce
Dr. Rajeev Singh, Director General, ICC stated that ICC demands a high priority for the
northeast region. It has immense potential and will become an important and
prosperous region in the country. It is important for us to boost local entrepreneurs and
give an impetus to local companies so that they can grow more fruits and vegetables.
North East India is next door to the markets in ASEAN (Association of Sout East Asian
South
Nations) nations. With peace returning in the region and 10% of the budget for union
ministries being allocated to the region, there is immense scope for food processing
industries in the region.
Capt Robin Bordoloi, MLA East Guwahati LAC & Chairman, Guwahati
Chairman, G
Metropolitan Development A
Authority
Legislator Captain Robin Bordoloi said that north east is blessed with biodiversity, huge
hydro-energy potential, oil and gas, coal, limestone, forest wealth, fruits and vegetables,
energy
flowers, herbs and aromatic plants, rare and rich flora and fauna. NE India has all the
potential to transform into a commercial hub and tourist paradise. The region shares
borders with China in the north, Bangladesh in the South West, Bhutan in the North-
South-West, North
West and Myanmar in the East. This makes the North East a prospective hub of
North-East
international trade and commerce.
He further added that NE has the potential in production of some major tropical fruits
like Banana, Pineapple, Mango and Guava, processing industry has a vast scoscope for
domestic and export market.
According to industry sources, less than 12 per cent of all fruits and vegetables
produced in the region are being processed and over 30 per cent is wasted owing to
lack of scientific post harvest management.
Thus there is tremendous scope for horticultural processing unit which will not only help
in marketing them outside the region as well as abroad, but also generate employment
opportunities in near future. Of late, some small food processing units have come up;

however, the proper potential of the food processing sector is still vastly unexplored.
er,
The export scenario of processed food products from the North east is dismal. Industry
Associations like the The Indian Chamber of Commerce, in its endeavour to showcase
the entrepreneurship of the North East, has arranged a number of fairs, meets and so
on in the south East Asian Countries and the outcome of these clearly indicate that
there could be a fair demand of processed food products in these countries. For this,
the prospective entrepreneurs need to be given proper training and orientation to the
nuances of making produces suitable for export marketing.
Mr. S C Sehgal, Chairman & Managing Director, NE Mega Food Park
Mr. Sehgal highlighted the mega food park coming up in Nalbari early next year to help
local entrepreneurs and cultivators of fruit and vegetables to reach out to a well
organized consumer market. The park is part of the 2009 Mega Food Park scheme of
the ministry of food processing industries (MoFPI) which aims to become a direct link
between farms and processing units and the consumer market.
The Park would be first of its kind in the region and the Mega Food Park will play the
role of a moderator and a facilitator and help local entrepreneurs to take a lead.
The Park aims to catalyze the food processing sector, increase the processing level at
8-10% and ensure value-addition to fruits and vegetables. The park will be covering an
addition
area of 36,000 square meters and will include 18 small scale units, several collection
centres, state-of-the-art technology well-equipped storage facilities, space for parking,
art technology, equipped
and provision logistical support to farmers and producers. Construction of the park is
almost complete and is expected to be operational early next year.
Dr. S K Saikia, Director, Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship
North East region has abundant raw materials (Including many in organic nature);
bundant aterials nature)
academically qualified youths (79.63% in NER & 74.04% All India) and people unwilling
p
to leave their communities.
Dr. Saikia mentioned that the region has potential for Agri & Allied crops such as
Agricultural (Tea, Ginger, Turmeric, Rice (Aromatic & Black rice) Horticultural
rice);
(Pineapple, Orange, Banana, Other Citrus, Passion etc); Medicinal Plants (herbs, berks,
nana,
roots etc) and horticultural crops such as Orange (Arunachal, Assam, Manipur,

parts of Assam, Manipur) and New Fruits (Kiwi (A.P. & Nagaland), Strawberry
) Kiwi
(Meghalaya))
The number of industries under food processing sector is negligible in the region. Out of
region
total about 98,000 SMEs in the region, about 7,500 (7%) industries are under food
processing sector. In Assam, out of total 25,000 industries in the state, about 2,450
ut
(15%) industries are under food processing sector.

Mr. H N Das, Former Chief Secretary to Government of Assam
Mr. Das mentioned that North
North-East India today stands poised as a major growth area
day
given the tremendous availability of natural resources coupled with attractive tax
holidays. In taking India to newer heights of agro & food processing capabilities, the
North Eastern Region (NER) of country can play a major role by leveraging its natural
y
and human resource advantages. NER houses variety of organically produced Fruits &
Vegetables, Cereals, Spices, Milk & Poultry products either fresh or processed that can
command a high price both in domestic & international market. With Mizoram being
already been declared an “Organic State” the rest are aspiring for this status. The

entire market for value added Farm Processing, Agro Food products, ready ready-to-eat
products is exploding and offering great opportunities With disposable incomes raised
opportunities.
4-5 times in last decade, more and more women are joining work to augment family
incomes, increased propensity for socializing, entertainment and leisure the demand for
processed foods- quick fix solutions for meals and snacks has increased exponentially

and still continuing. Moreover, the emerging organized retail sector is further fuelling
demand. The mantra lies in increasing capacities of the local entrepreneurs of the
Northeast and substantiating them to best utilize this potential by moving up the value
this
chain. Recognizing the range of opportunities existing amidst this sector, the
government is taking keen initiatives like development of infrastructure such as Food
Parks, Cold chains, Roadways introducing Investment friendly schemes, conducting

context.Production
are mainly traditional without much change over the years. Poor extension & input
delivery mechanism (about 7% household getting access to govt. extension services).

Poor disease control mechanism (about 25% farmers are getting access to govt.
veterinary services). Poor physical and bacteriological quality of livestock products
marketed in NE India. Little/ no effort on ensuring food safety & controlling zoonosis.

require adoption of appropriate legislation, strengthening capacity to enforce rules,
capacity
promoting adoption of good agricultural, manufacturing and hygiene practices, greater
collective action, and some targeted investments. Implementing these actions will
require joint efforts by the government and the private sector.
