VERY BEST WISHES
FOR THE NEW YEAR!
Dear Colleagues
Happy New Year and I hope you had a relaxing and refreshing break, and that the first full
week of the new term has got off to positive start for 2013.
AoC London will be starting out the New Year with the Principals’ Forum on 17th January
looking at funding issues with the Skills Funding Agency and Education Funding Agency. We
are delighted that Maggie Galliers, President of the AOC, will be joining this meeting leading a
discussion on key and topical issues for our Colleges.
The New Year series of AoC London networks starts out with the Heads of Student Services
network meeting on 21st January, followed by the Marketing Committee on 23rd January. A
full schedule of the spring term networks you can find on AoC website. If you are interested in
finding out more, or you have any queries, please contact Evelina.
Since the last AoC London Bulletin there have been a number of significant events:
London Skills and Employability – the evolving role of further education Colleges,
December 14th 2012
The event was sponsored by Barclays, this high profile event considered ways in which FE and
businesses can collaborate to ensure skills provision meets both existing and future needs of
London's employers and the wider economy. The discussion was chaired by Ian Ashman,
Principal of Hackney Community College, member of the London Enterprise Panel's Skills and
Employment Working Group and Chair of AoC London Region. Key note contributors
included Michael Davies, Chief Executive of the UK Commission for Employment and Skills,
Bobbie McClelland, Deputy Director at the Department of Business innovation and Skills, Max
Reynolds, Head of Accredited Learning Development at BT, and Mike Thompson, Head of
Learning Development at Barclays. The event looked at models of collaboration and ways of
working to deliver what businesses need in the current challenging climate. A note will be
issued in due course to provide a summary of the event. For further information contact
Caroline.

Greater London Authority Vision 2020, December 17th 2012
This was an important and timely opportunity to meet with lead GLA officers on the
developing GLA Vision 2020, a publication which the Mayor intends to share early in the New
Year. This has clear links with the LEP Skills and Employment Plan also due to be published
later this year. We had the opportunity to share our London Colleges Policies and Priorities
publication which chimes well with the GLA content, intention and approach to date in terms
of the current and future contribution of London Colleges to the vision around London's
economy and future. A number of actions were agreed. If you would like to find out more
please contact Caroline or Judith.
Joint meeting of NAS and AoC Regional/Area Directors, January 10th 2013
It was a periodic coming together of NAS and AoC Directors to consider policy developments
and performance challenges. Key issues of the moment are around quality enhancement
related to models of delivery and the challenges around increasing 16 – 18 apprenticeship starts
– both key ministerial priorities.
There is much more going at the moment as we all know, for example in relation to High Needs
Students Policy implementation, and developing our approach on London World Skills – more
on these issues in future bulletins.
Concluding on a very positive note, AoC London has been successful in securing two LSIS bids
with our partners – Building Learner Progression and London Apprenticeship Good Practice –
again, watch this space.
Best wishes
Caroline Neville
