Advertising and promotion
Photography in advertising is used to sell the product, using a lot of special
effects to get the best look out of the image to grab the audiences eye. Taking the
fiat 500 images: it goes for the more extreme colour (yellow) and links it in with
fashion (image on the right) also showing that the target audience for the
particular colour or car is for woman.
The images for both advertising and promotion tend to be controlled as they like
to get the best look for the image. Image of a model, get rid of any blemishes to
create a perfect look of the model for the audience to idolise. Car adding shine
and extra brightness of colour to get a real new car effect. This can be done on
location and in a studio; second image for example is of a promotional image this
was done in a studio with a green screen. For both the use of light can be artificial
and natural or mixture of them both depending on the situation of the ad.
Almost every photo will have post-production. Mainly using Photoshop to edit the
image to get the perfect end look image.
Advertising is found in almost anywhere, magazines, billboards, TV, back of
books, etc… depending on what its target audience is and what they are
advertising depends on where the advertising is found. Whether its
fashion, cars, TV programmes, bands, sports etc.. Also if its on a billboard or
posters depends on the area and what its close to so if its near a cinema might be
worth to put an image up of an up and coming movie or what type of people live
around this area.
Angus McBean1904 – 1990
was a Welsh photographer who enjoyed surrealist photography and was one of the most
influential and famous portrait photographers of the 20th century. He is particularly
well known for his work photographing Vivien Leigh and the The Beatles‟ first album cover.
Not many photographers can add that claim to their name!
McBean also took portraits of other high-profile celebrities of his time including
Agatha Christie, Audrey Hepburn and Noel Coward.
Corinne Day 1962 – 2010
Corinne Day was a fashion and documentary photographer
acclaimed for bringing a „hard-edged‟ documentary look to
fashion photography and was at the forefront of the „grunge‟ style
in the 1990s. Corinne sadly passed away from a brain tumor last
year.

Post-production:
Get rid of

(spots, freckles
etc..) and to add
any extra detail.

Fashion
Fashion photography is a type of photography that is devoted to show different
types of fashion products, such as clothing, makeup, accessories…
Fashion photography is for advertising fashion magazines
(vogue, Elle, company.) or on fashion websites (topshop, misguided, miss
Selfridge, new look.)
All the photos for fashion are controlled to make sure the whole body structure
and features are at there best again getting rid of any blemishes as these are
images that are what the audience are going to idolise and also make them buy
the product more. The black and white photo at the top would be in a studio under
controlled artificial lighting. It would have been in its normal colour but then edited
afterwards into black and white to go with the theme.
Fashion photos can be in a studio or on location depending on the situation. All
three of these photos here that I have picked are done in a studio. They mostly
will use a studio for this as they can control the lighting better and can change the
back ground if needed when comes to editing afterwards.
Post-production is used in every fashion photos as they are normally heavily
edited. Bottom photo for example; could of got rid of some blemishes that was on
the girls face to begin with. They could of also brightened up the flower. They
could also reshape the face to get it to look like what perfect is meant to look like.
This is done on photo shop.

Photojournalism
Photojournalism is a form of journalism. Collecting images and presenting them to
the news for publication or broadcast. The photos are in order to tell more of the
story or just the story.
The images for photojournalism is of its natural self, using only the light of the
flash gun and no editing for the final images meaning no post-production is
needed unless they need to get rid of something in the image.
Paparazzi- use a lot of flash in there images with a normal lenses.
Sport- uses long lenses as they are normally taking the images from a distance
and flash isn't always needed.
Sports photography is a genre of photography that covers all sports, which a
branch off photojournalism. This is normally used for newspapers or sports
magazines. Sports photography can also be used for advertising to promote a
sport or brand.
Paparazzi are the photographers that take photos of celebrities, from entertainers
to athletes. They are normally independent contractors. The photos that are taken
are usual from taking an advantage of an opportunity. Paparazzi behaviour is said
to be like a stalker that harass celebrities invading their personal space.
War photography is another branch of photojournalism. The photographers in this
genre find themselves in harms way risking their life's to get these photos and
some have died to get the photo. They don‟t need to work near active fighting
they can also take photos of the aftermath as this is less dangerous and doesn‟t
get in the way.

Natural real photo, that taken
at its best or worst time to
create a story.
Post-production isn‟t
needed for the
image, as its taken to
reflect on real life.
Portraiture
Portraiture is usually a photo of someone face (the shoulders up) but the entire
body or background can be included in the frame. A portrait of a person or
persons is there to show personality, mood and expression on the persons face.
Many genres use this type of photography- its used a lot in fashion and in
magazines. Authors in their books tend to have portraits of themselves in the front
or back to show themselves to their readers.
Portraiture is the most commonly used type of photography, as people use it on
everyday life, on face book for profile pictures and for people on their portfolio.
Many families like to go to professional photographers to go get a family portrait
done that they display in their family home.
Post-production can be done on the images depending on the situation. Adding
brightness, getting rid of blemishes, turning into black and white etc…
The lighting used for them can be either natural or artificial lighting again
depending on the situation. Many of them are done in studios, but things such as
wedding photos etc, are done on location, inside a church or outside.
Any type of lenses can be used for a portrait photo, but the settings or lenses may
depend on the artistic purposes and some lenses are better than others.

Illustration
Illustration photography is still of a real life image. But the image is there to
illustrate what the book is going to contain or step by step images of how to do
something e.g fixing a car. So the image upholds a story of its own. The photos
are always next to a piece of text.
Illustration images are normally a front cover of a book or inside the book and in
news papers next to the story its illustrating for.
The images are normally natural images that are their original self meaning no
post-production is needed unless the back ground wants to be cut out and the
light would be natural with maybe the use of a flash gun.

Architectural
Architecture is photos of buildings of something of a similar structure.
These photos are taken for architects, surveyors, building
companies, sellers, artistic reasons etc…
The use of lenses and equipment depends of the situation and the use of the
image at end this is the same for post-production. Photo taken for a selling
reason wouldn‟t use any post-production as the photos need to be of how it really
looks. Architects may use some production on it and better equipment to get the
best look of the image to show to potential business partners and the same goes
for building companies and surveyors. People who do it for artistic reason may do
also sorts with the production side of things as it could be a piece of art they
might sell.
An example of anyone talking an architectural photo is the Disney princess castle
as anyone would take a photo of that for memory reason or historical reasons.
Images of building can be found in many things, as it could be used to advertise a
hotel, selling a building in a newspaper or online, holiday resort or leaflet of a
place.
Example of architectural photographer:
Graham Lucas Commons Advertising + Architectural
Photographer Midlands and London based, working throughout
the UK. Please feel free to discuss your new project and the
ways in which we could work together.

High street studio
High street photography is where people pay for their photos to be taken, such as
family portraits, wedding photos, parties and other events.
Post-production is done on the images to make they get a good finishing look
increasing the chances of the buyer to buy them. High street studios tend to have
equipment/props for the buyer to use which is something they may not be able to
get at home, such as a motorbike, guitar etc.. They quality of the camera and
equipment are a lot more higher than what people would have at home.
The use of green screen for different backgrounds meaning they can choose or
have any background they want something else people wouldn‟t have at home.
High street photographers take their photos in a studio, depending on the
company and how well they are doing depends on whether it‟s a town studio or a
home one due to renting costs. They can take photos on location if its for a
special event or wedding. Majority of photos are done in a studio. A big company
and some small company's would have different cameras and lenses that they
use for different effects as well as special lighting not only with the flash gun but
with diffusers so you don‟t get that harsh light.
Example of a high street studio-

Fine art photography
Fine art photography is photography made only to be a piece of art, adding
special effects whether that's post-production or whether the effects are done
before with makeup, masks, paint etc…
Loads of techniques and equipment can be used to make all these different
special effects. They are made in the vision of the artist, showing
emotion, expressions to share with others rather than in a commercial reasons as
there's no reason for the photo to be taken. Normally sold as prints or in books.
Some of the photos are unrealistic, things you wouldn‟t see in day to day life.

Medical
Medical photography is an area of photography that concerns itself on the
documentation of the presentation of the patients. Taking photos showing the real
truth of injuries and diseases and their treatment. No post-production is needed
and the camera/equipment can vary.
The photos need to be free from being misleading that can cause
misinterpretation. These images go tend to go on text books for medical students
and science at school (teaching) or leaflets for the hospital and research
(internet). Photos can also be taken at a crime scene, to keep a log of the image
of when it was found that could come in use in the post-mortem room and to keep
a log of.
The images are to do with anything on the human body and hospital rooms where
operations and treatment takes place.
Use this slide to annotate an archetype image
Documentary
Documentary photography is used to document significant and historical
events, to report the real life footage that‟s truthful that are most often photos of
people.
Documentary photographers tend to be sent on long term projects in anywhere in
the world reporting breaking news stories or for a documentary for the TV.
Sometime its can be used for advertisement, charity‟s/raising money. postproduction is only used if the images are for this reason (advertisement), if not no
post-production work is used on the images as they are trying to reflect real life.
The images are there to tell a story, but rather than with one single image its with
multiple images.
The images aren't staged they are taken from something that‟s really happening
at the time, the most staged it would get is getting a group of people together (for
advertisement) showing that they are suffering together and they are all the same.
Example of a photographer in this field:

Dorothea Lange
Photographer Dorothea Lange was an influential American
documentary photographer and photojournalist, best known for
her Depression-era work for the Farm Security Administration.

Photography book pro forma

  • 2. Advertising and promotion Photography in advertising is used to sell the product, using a lot of special effects to get the best look out of the image to grab the audiences eye. Taking the fiat 500 images: it goes for the more extreme colour (yellow) and links it in with fashion (image on the right) also showing that the target audience for the particular colour or car is for woman. The images for both advertising and promotion tend to be controlled as they like to get the best look for the image. Image of a model, get rid of any blemishes to create a perfect look of the model for the audience to idolise. Car adding shine and extra brightness of colour to get a real new car effect. This can be done on location and in a studio; second image for example is of a promotional image this was done in a studio with a green screen. For both the use of light can be artificial and natural or mixture of them both depending on the situation of the ad. Almost every photo will have post-production. Mainly using Photoshop to edit the image to get the perfect end look image. Advertising is found in almost anywhere, magazines, billboards, TV, back of books, etc… depending on what its target audience is and what they are advertising depends on where the advertising is found. Whether its fashion, cars, TV programmes, bands, sports etc.. Also if its on a billboard or posters depends on the area and what its close to so if its near a cinema might be worth to put an image up of an up and coming movie or what type of people live around this area. Angus McBean1904 – 1990 was a Welsh photographer who enjoyed surrealist photography and was one of the most influential and famous portrait photographers of the 20th century. He is particularly well known for his work photographing Vivien Leigh and the The Beatles‟ first album cover. Not many photographers can add that claim to their name! McBean also took portraits of other high-profile celebrities of his time including Agatha Christie, Audrey Hepburn and Noel Coward.
  • 3. Corinne Day 1962 – 2010 Corinne Day was a fashion and documentary photographer acclaimed for bringing a „hard-edged‟ documentary look to fashion photography and was at the forefront of the „grunge‟ style in the 1990s. Corinne sadly passed away from a brain tumor last year. 3
  • 4. Use this slide to annotate an archetype image Masculine and feminine. What‟s the idealist beauty for men and women. Woman: long hair, a lot of makeup, jaw line, lips, cheek bones etc… Lighting used to light up areas more than others, in a studio to keep control of the light. Artificial lighting. Post-production: Get rid of blemishes (spots, freckles etc..) and to add any extra detail. They‟ve made the skin colour almost the same colour as the perfume bottle.
  • 5. Fashion Fashion photography is a type of photography that is devoted to show different types of fashion products, such as clothing, makeup, accessories… Fashion photography is for advertising fashion magazines (vogue, Elle, company.) or on fashion websites (topshop, misguided, miss Selfridge, new look.) All the photos for fashion are controlled to make sure the whole body structure and features are at there best again getting rid of any blemishes as these are images that are what the audience are going to idolise and also make them buy the product more. The black and white photo at the top would be in a studio under controlled artificial lighting. It would have been in its normal colour but then edited afterwards into black and white to go with the theme. Fashion photos can be in a studio or on location depending on the situation. All three of these photos here that I have picked are done in a studio. They mostly will use a studio for this as they can control the lighting better and can change the back ground if needed when comes to editing afterwards. Post-production is used in every fashion photos as they are normally heavily edited. Bottom photo for example; could of got rid of some blemishes that was on the girls face to begin with. They could of also brightened up the flower. They could also reshape the face to get it to look like what perfect is meant to look like. This is done on photo shop.

  • 7. Idealistic look of how a woman should look. Long skinny legs, with a good figure. How a perfect woman should look. Post-production would be used to get rid of any blemishes to make the image as perfect as possible. Adding useful effects, such as brightening areas to make them stand out. Artificial lighting is used to make sure they can get the areas light right to get the right effect for the photo. This will be done in a studio. Fashion is selling the clothes, accessories, makeu p etc… This image is trying to sell everything on the image as we can see all of what she is wearing. The image gives a clear view of what she is wearing.

The photos are in order to tell more of the story or just the story. Paparazzi- use a lot of flash in there images with a normal lenses. Sport- uses long lenses as they are normally taking the images from a distance and flash isn't always needed. • 10. Natural real photo, that taken at its best or worst time to create a story. Post-production isn‟t needed for the image, as its taken to reflect on real life.
  • 11. Portraiture Portraiture is usually a photo of someone face (the shoulders up) but the entire body or background can be included in the frame. A portrait of a person or persons is there to show personality, mood and expression on the persons face. Many genres use this type of photography- its used a lot in fashion and in magazines. Authors in their books tend to have portraits of themselves in the front or back to show themselves to their readers. Portraiture is the most commonly used type of photography, as people use it on everyday life, on face book for profile pictures and for people on their portfolio. Many families like to go to professional photographers to go get a family portrait done that they display in their family home. Post-production can be done on the images depending on the situation. Adding brightness, getting rid of blemishes, turning into black and white etc… The lighting used for them can be either natural or artificial lighting again depending on the situation. Many of them are done in studios, but things such as wedding photos etc, are done on location, inside a church or outside. • 12. Use this slide to annotate an archetype image As much editing can be done
  • 13. Illustration Illustration photography is still of a real life image. But the image is there to illustrate what the book is going to contain or step by step images of how to do something e.g fixing a car. So the image upholds a story of its own. The photos are always next to a piece of text. Illustration images are normally a front cover of a book or inside the book and in news papers next to the story its illustrating for. The images are normally natural images that are their original self meaning no post-production is needed unless the back ground wants to be cut out and the light would be natural with maybe the use of a flash gun.
  • 14. Use this slide to annotate an archetype image
  • 15. Architectural Architecture is photos of buildings of something of a similar structure. These photos are taken for architects, surveyors, building companies, sellers, artistic reasons etc… The use of lenses and equipment depends of the situation and the use of the image at end this is the same for post-production. Photo taken for a selling reason wouldn‟t use any post-production as the photos need to be of how it really looks. Architects may use some production on it and better equipment to get the best look of the image to show to potential business partners and the same goes for building companies and surveyors. People who do it for artistic reason may do also sorts with the production side of things as it could be a piece of art they might sell. An example of anyone talking an architectural photo is the Disney princess castle as anyone would take a photo of that for memory reason or historical reasons. Images of building can be found in many things, as it could be used to advertise a hotel, selling a building in a newspaper or online, holiday resort or leaflet of a place. Example of architectural photographer: Graham Lucas Commons Advertising + Architectural Photographer Midlands and London based, working throughout the UK. Please feel free to discuss your new project and the ways in which we could work together.

  • 17. High street studio High street photography is where people pay for their photos to be taken, such as family portraits, wedding photos, parties and other events. Post-production is done on the images to make they get a good finishing look increasing the chances of the buyer to buy them. High street studios tend to have equipment/props for the buyer to use which is something they may not be able to get at home, such as a motorbike, guitar etc.. They quality of the camera and equipment are a lot more higher than what people would have at home. The use of green screen for different backgrounds meaning they can choose or have any background they want something else people wouldn‟t have at home. High street photographers take their photos in a studio, depending on the company and how well they are doing depends on whether it‟s a town studio or a home one due to renting costs. They can take photos on location if its for a special event or wedding. Majority of photos are done in a studio. A big company and some small company's would have different cameras and lenses that they use for different effects as well as special lighting not only with the flash gun but with diffusers so you don‟t get that harsh light. Example of a high street studio- http://www.portfoliostudios.co.uk/ Welcome we are portfolio studios ltd, leading photographers In York, Leeds and in the north Yorkshire area. we boast the areas largest mutli-set Photography studios and offer a range of professional photography sessions And packages, packages including fashion family, boudoir and Burlesque, pets and kids photo shoots.

  • 19. Fine art photography Fine art photography is photography made only to be a piece of art, adding special effects whether that's post-production or whether the effects are done before with makeup, masks, paint etc… Loads of techniques and equipment can be used to make all these different special effects. They are made in the vision of the artist, showing emotion, expressions to share with others rather than in a commercial reasons as there's no reason for the photo to be taken. Normally sold as prints or in books. Some of the photos are unrealistic, things you wouldn‟t see in day to day life.

  • 21. Medical Medical photography is an area of photography that concerns itself on the documentation of the presentation of the patients. Taking photos showing the real truth of injuries and diseases and their treatment. No post-production is needed and the camera/equipment can vary. The photos need to be free from being misleading that can cause misinterpretation. These images go tend to go on text books for medical students and science at school (teaching) or leaflets for the hospital and research (internet). Photos can also be taken at a crime scene, to keep a log of the image of when it was found that could come in use in the post-mortem room and to keep a log of. The images are to do with anything on the human body and hospital rooms where operations and treatment takes place.
  • 22. Use this slide to annotate an archetype image
  • 23. Documentary Documentary photography is used to document significant and historical events, to report the real life footage that‟s truthful that are most often photos of people. Documentary photographers tend to be sent on long term projects in anywhere in the world reporting breaking news stories or for a documentary for the TV. Sometime its can be used for advertisement, charity‟s/raising money. postproduction is only used if the images are for this reason (advertisement), if not no post-production work is used on the images as they are trying to reflect real life. The images are there to tell a story, but rather than with one single image its with multiple images. The images aren't staged they are taken from something that‟s really happening at the time, the most staged it would get is getting a group of people together (for advertisement) showing that they are suffering together and they are all the same. Example of a photographer in this field: Dorothea Lange Photographer Dorothea Lange was an influential American documentary photographer and photojournalist, best known for her Depression-era work for the Farm Security Administration.
