I was among eight fellows from Pakistan, who were selected for 2014-Alfred Friendly
Fellowships from across the world. My host in the United States of America (U.S.A) was
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (www.post-gazette.com) where I learned new skills to deepen my
knowledge in the field of journalism. I also contributed five stories/features for the Post-Gazette.
I interacted with locals, officials and public representatives and discussed with them the matters
of mutual interest. I also learnt use of social media including Facebook and Twitter for sharing
stories to attract more readers.
During the fellowship, I attended 10 days long mid-term seminar on Data Journalism. I learned
new skills related to the use of spreadsheets, databases, data cleaning with Microsoft Excel,
Access and SQL. I have now expertise to analyze huge database for any certain purpose. I also
learnt the use of professional still and video cameras. I can also edit sounds, photos and videos
for professional purpose. I was invited by a local radio anchor and Voice of America’s radio
anchor in two different radio shows as a guest speaker.

I won fellowship offered by Investigative Reporter and Editors (IRE), a supreme organization
working for the development of journalism in the U.S.A., and attended Boot Camp on “Computer
Assisted Reporting” for five days in Columbia, Missouri and learned in depth skills on data
journalism. During the workshop, I analyzed different official databases and practiced data
cleaning methods. I am now member of the IRE.

My Duties: Primarily, I have been covering the crime beat ever since I joined The News
International as a Staff Reporter in 2007. I am responsible for the coverage of incidents related to
terrorism, murders, accidents, and law & order, to work on follow-ups of crimes related incidents,
exclusive stuff besides contributing features, special reports and developments/irregularities in
Police Department. Besides this, reporting of events and developments with regards to Pakistan
Rangers, Prisons Department and Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) are also part of my beat. Apart from
covering of routine incidents of crime, my additional responsibilities include coverage of seminars,
press conferences and protests taking place in the provincial metropolis, Lahore.
I am also assigned to impart training of reporting to the interns, who join The News from different
educational institutions.

Duties: I joined Daily Times, English daily newspaper, as a Staff Reporter and was assigned the
beat of City District Government. I covered issues related to growing trend of beggary especially
by children, road infrastructure, housing societies and parks etc. I also reported on traffic
engineering and planning related issues and implementation of traffic rules. The waste
management by the city government was also an important issue, which I used to highlight time
and again.

Duties: My journalistic career started with the launch of The Post, English daily of Khabrain
Group of Newspapers, in May 2005. Initially, I worked as a trainee reporter and covered seminars,
workshops, and festivals etc. Later, I started writing features in weekly magazine of the same
newspaper named “Vista”. I have a credit of giving around 7 Cover Page issues on different social
problems in the Vista. With the passage of time, I was promoted as a Staff Reporter and a proper
beat of City District Government was assigned to me. I covered the issues related to Lahore
Development Authority, Traffic Engineering & Planning, Parks & Horticulture Authority and
Waste Management.

Teaching
I have been teaching the subject of English to the students of graduation level at different
educational academies. I have also been teaching English as a second language to the students
preparing for IELTS and spoken English tests. I have been imparting training to the interns, who
join The News as part of their studies since 2007.
