The Australian Collins class submarine HMAS Farncomb fired a live Mark-48 torpedo at the decommissioned destroyer escort ship TORRENS from over the horizon as part of training exercises. The torpedo struck below the keel of the TORRENS, breaking it in half and causing the stern section to sink rapidly and the bow section to eventually sink as well. The Mark-48 torpedo contains a warhead with an explosive power equivalent to 1200 pounds of TNT, and is designed to maximize damage by detonating below a target ship's keel in order to break its keel through a pressure wave.
