- Rural area far north west Tasmania Municipality has one of the largest coastlines in Tas Main industries – Largest town in Circular Head is Smithton – approx 3.5k Tourist town Stanley - Nut
- Initiated in 2011 to grow the event – 90 people / Launch the event / recognise and thank sponsors / Citizens of the year recipients spoke about receiving the award and what it meant to them 12 months on
- Location /timing Largest open space area in Smithton – always celebrate on 26 th January – twilight event to incorporate fireworks
- Brief description of event Due to the setting on the Duck River hence the name of “Twilight on the Duck”. Twilight on the Duck has been running since 2009 in this format (previously day time/award breakfast). Aus Day Awards – Citizen/Young Citizen/ Community Event/ Local Hero Largest Community Event in Circular Head, people wanting to Celebrate Australia Day and what is great about being Australian – Togetherness!!! Expand on activities
- Estimated crowd – growth Event continues to grow each year.2011 introduced wrist bands to “try” and calculate numbers this year. Why has it grown The committee has become more professional in organising the event (training) / developed business plan - sponsorship packages – attracted more committee members with fresh ideas- sharing the workload (sub committees) Increased Promotion and advertising Continuing to improve the quality of activities Central location – easy access fortunate to experience fabulous weather – so far!!
- Successful event – 3 points Low Cost t – its inclusive event makes it affordable for the whole family Catering for all ages – different activities that appeal to the wider audience – quality Strong volunteer base – committee – major fund raiser for many groups/service clubs that participate
- Tips Know your community Feedback / undertaken surveys - people want low cost event Quality entertainment/activities Have a draw factor e.g. fireworks, bands, great food, range of activities, giveaways – Australian flags, sunscreen Know your limitations Recognise the importance of starting slowly and build each year – stay within budget – (constraints) Council funds the event plus sponsorship – $30k equates to approx $10 per head. mindful that the location has limitations
