Please join the Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources (CCCOER) for a free and open webinar on best practices for Faculty Development to promote OER adoption. Two librarians who are leading efforts in their states to inform and inspire faculty to adopt OER will be featured. Open Oregon is a project of the Oregon’s community colleges focused on reducing textbooks costs and open education is gaining momentum as an innovative and long-term solution to the problem. Amy Hofer is the statewide coordinator of these efforts and works with all 17 community colleges in Oregon to help promote these efforts through faculty development and sharing resources centrally. Lansing Community College held its first OER Summit in fall of 2015. With support from their Provost, Regina Gong and her team organized a statewide event for Michigan community college featuring OER thought leaders from many organizations including CCCOER and also faculty from Lansing Community College. It was an important event to inform and advocate for using open educational resources to reduce costs and expand faculty’s curriculum choices. Please join the Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources (CCCOER) for a free and open webinar on Designing for Open Pedagogy. Open Pedagogy was first introduced by Lumen Learning co-founder David Wiley, as a way to capture how the use of OER can change educational practices. He relates that using OER in the same way as traditional textbooks is like driving an airplane down the road – it is missing out on what open can provide for student and teacher collaboration, engagement, and learning. When: June 8, 10amPST/1pmEST We will hear from two professors who have not only adopted OER but have redesigned their courses with the principles of open pedagogy. Although reduced cost is what originally attracted them to using OER, involving their students in creating and evaluating OER course materials has significantly increased student engagement and critical thinking and their courses are continually being updated and improved as a result. Featured Speakers: • Suzanne Wakim, Biology Faculty Butte College, OER Coordinator Will share her open course design strategy where students in subsequent semesters build on the work of those before them to create an open textbook and ancillary material. Students discuss and decide on how best to present material in the book, what applications are relevant for each topic, and what materials can help other students learn the course content. • Mike Elmore, Political Science Faculty, Tacoma Community College Will share how he has engaged students in collaborative writing of an Introduction to Political Science open textbook. His students report that writing assignments take on new meaning when they realize that other people are going to read their work. Not just repeating what they have read or heard in class, they compare their understanding with their peers and collaborate to present their ideas in the best way possible. Abstract Initiatives supporting the use and creation of open educational resources (OER) can provide cost, access, and student success solutions for higher education. The affordability argument often associated with OER gets significant attention because commercial textbook prices are startling and cost savings accumulate quickly when transitioning to free resources. However, the pedagogical innovation enabled by openness is as highly valued by both educators and their students. In this presentation, we’ll define OER, examine the impact of OER use in higher education, explore values that are fundamental to open education, discuss concepts of information ownership and authority, and highlight examples of open education that have empowered educators, improved information access, and increased student agency. https://atlt.iupui.edu/keynote

Heather Crozier, presenter Student debt is a compelling issue and many institutions are investigating solutions to ease the financial burdens of their students. Increasing the use of open educational resources benefits students by reducing course costs. Adopting OER in the classroom allows faculty more freedom in choosing instructional tools. Faculty also benefit from open access publishing by increasing their exposure. However, on the campus of a small, private institution, attendance at workshops to spread awareness and increase the use of these materials was minimal. Faculty had the perception that free resources could not be the same quality as traditional resources. In order to dispel this myth, the Electronic Resources Librarian and Educational Technology Manager collaborated to create custom one hour sessions for individual departments, leveraging library/faculty liaison relationships and the expertise of the office of educational technology. In the session, faculty learn more about open access publishing options, the value of open educational resources, the quality of many open educational resources, and where to find these resources. The session uses the course management system to both disseminate the information shared in the session and create a forum for departments to share resources with each other. Through the CMS, faculty gain access to vetted resources. All attendants have editing privileges within the site after the workshop, allowing them to curate course-specific lists for sharing and future reference. Pilot sessions have been well received and wider implementation is planned for the next academic year.

Indigenous History Month Art Activity In June 2022, we got together virtually to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Month by working our way through a month-long art project. Each person was to think of an Indigenous artist they admire, research the artist and their work, and create a piece of art for themselves influenced by the artist they had chosen. Throughout the month we presented on these artists and why we connect to their art and discussed important topics like appropriation vs. appreciation. We learned a lot about Indigenous artists in Canada and about each other and ourselves. The art project allowed people to connect with their heritage as well as Indigenous peoples; it was as much a research and art project as it was a team-building and self-reflection activity.

Presentation by Candy Ho, Faculty, Educational Studies, Kwantlen Polytechnic University and Dr. Cindy Xin Director of Research, Simon Fraser University Increasingly students begin their post-secondary experience with a career in mind, and two recent studies (Environics Research Group, 2011; Ho, 2017) suggest that those paths are largely influenced by educators (e.g. Faculty) before a student even considers visiting a career centre. Consequently, these professionals have the inherent capacity to extend their care for students beyond their teaching roles: as Career Influencers, defined by the EdD study as individuals working in a higher education institution who informally provide career-related advice, guidance, and/or counselling to prospective and current students and/or alumni. This session has two goals. It aims to help attendees recognize their influence in student career development, and consider how they can incorporate career development components into their teaching practice. Findings and implications from Ho’s (2017) EdD study will serve as a backdrop of the session (research questions are included at the end*), while attendees are guided through reflective and discussion activities that enhance the awareness of their influence in student career development. Current planned activities include having the attendees: -Reflect on their “constellation of life roles” (Magnusson, 2014) and how roles, events, and experiences contribute to their approach as educators -Consider how their current activities and interactions with students (e.g., curriculum, office hours conversations) help students develop employability skills -Discuss their impressions on the notion of the ‘Everyday Career Influencer’, pondering on questions such as: How do they currently serve as Career Influencers and demonstrate a sense of care for student career development? How might they further their practice as Career Influencers? What opportunities and/or challenges do they face as Career Influencers within their institutions? What can they do to take advantage and/or overcome them? -EdD study research questions and sub-questions: How do post-secondary education professionals conceive their influence in student career development? How do they conceptualize the term “career”? How do they see their role as having an impact on student career development? How do they see themselves as individuals as having an impact on student career development? What resources and/or competencies do they believe are important in furthering their impact on student career development? Presentation by Ian Linkletter, Learning Technology Specialist, UBC Presenting about UBC’s efforts to implement and evaluate team chat as a learning technology for online and blended courses. Team chat (like Slack) is a transformative communication and collaboration technology, combining threaded discussions with real-time chat in an intuitive and flexible way. Features like persistent history, advanced search capability, file sharing, typing status, mobile apps, and emoji reactions add up to a versatile tool that is still easy to use. Research shows how timely interactions with instructors, collaboration with classmates, and a sense of community can enhance teaching and learning. This is particularly important in an online learning environment. Team chat has given our students a direct communication channel to their instructor and each other, helping them connect, ask questions, seek clarification, collaborate, and build community. Since 2016, the Faculty of Education has been piloting an open source team chat application called Mattermost on a UBC-hosted server. Unlike Slack or Microsoft Teams, which are both cloud-hosted outside of Canada, Mattermost allows us to keep student data secure in compliance with BC’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA). Mattermost has been used in over 20 course sections across the faculties of Education, Arts, and Science. As of December 2017, the UBC Mattermost pilot consists of 100 daily active users, 300 monthly active users, and almost 70,000 posts. Attendees will learn (and chat) about: • Ways team chat can enhance learning • How team chat has been applied in real use cases including online program cohorts, learning communities, and research teams • The relationship between secure, safe, transparent platforms and academic freedom Mattermost will be blended into the session, allowing attendees to choose the conversation(s) they wish to join, participate in real-time, network with colleagues, and carry on chatting after the Festival of Learning concludes. Issues such as depression and anxiety are becoming increasingly common not only within the student population but also among instructors and educational administrators, many of whom find their collegial environments to be fraught with new hurdles involving the care and wellness of people. Bedrock human values such as belonging, trust, and emotional safety are becoming harder to develop and sustain in educational environments undergoing turmoil and change from a variety of influences. How might we preserve and nurture these values? How might we commit to practices that cultivate the wellness and well-being of our colleagues and communities? How might we commit to environments of authentic caring in which people feel emotionally safe and valued? Over the past year, a small group of practitioners at several local institutions (BCcampus, Douglas College, Vancouver Community College) has been working on projects designed to encourage emotional care and wellness. In this interactive session on the theme of "Mental Health for all within and across our organizations", these practitioners will each share the hurdles and rewards of their process. The purpose of the session will be to provide participants with perspectives and tools to use in approaching themes of care and wellness at their own institutions -- with colleagues, students, and community partners. The experiential session will be informed by the practice, theory, and research currently being conducted at the partner institutions involved in these projects. Participants will hear about common hurdles involved in promoting the care and wellness of people, will hear perspectives about navigating the complex terrain of human relationships, and will practice tools and ideas for moving forward with their own initiatives. Discover the Kisan Call Centre: Your Gateway to Agricultural Assistance KISAN CALL CENTRE In order to harness the potential of ICT in Agriculture, Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare launched the scheme “Kisan Call Centres” (KCCs) on January 21, 2004. Main aim of the scheme is to answer farmers’ queries on a telephone call in their own language. These call centres are working in 21 different locations in the country covering all the States and UTs. A countrywide common eleven digit Toll Free Number 1800-180-1551 has been allotted for Kisan Call Centre. This number is accessible through mobile phones and landlines of all telecom networks including private service providers. Replies to the farmers’ queries are given in 22 local languages. Kisan Call Centre services are available from 6.00 AM to 10.00 PM on all seven days of the week at each KCC location. Kisan Call Centre agents known as Farm Tele Advisors (FTAs), who are graduate or above (i.e. PG or Doctorate) in Agriculture or allied sectors (Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, Fisheries, Poultry, Bee-Keeping, Sericulture, Aquaculture, Agricultural Engineering, Agricultural Marketing, Bio-Technology, Home Science, etc.) and possess excellent communication skills in respective local language. Queries which cannot be answered by FTAs are transferred to higher level experts. These experts are Subject Matter Specialists (SMSs) of State Departments of Agriculture (SDAs), ICAR Institutes, KVKs and State Agricultural Universities (SAUs). A Kisan Knowledge Management System (KKMS) has been developed to capture all the details of the caller and sending gist of answer given through SMS. KKMS has its independent website : http://dackkms.gov.in. The KCC, FTAs working at various KCC locations throughout the country have access to this website through their specific IDs and password provided to them.
