• Mother- Rhea: Titaness daughter of the
sky god Uranus
• Father- Cronus: leader of the first
generation of Titans
• Siblings- Zeus, Hestia, Hera, Demeter, and
Hades
3. History
• Poseidon was born from Rhea but
Poseidon’s father, Cronus, was told that
his kids would overpower him so he
swallowed all of the children except
for Zeus. He drank poison one day and
threw up all five children. After this,
the three brothers went to war and as a
gift of thanks the brothers each received
a weapon. Zeus was given a thunderbolt,
Hades a helmet of darkness, and
Poseidon a trident. They then drew lots
to figure out what they would rule,
4. Symbols
• Many symbols are used to represent
Poseidon, such as a Trident, a horse, a
dolphin, a seashell, a bull,
earthquakes, fish, and tidal waves. The
trident is the most common symbol and
is his weapon of choice. The horse is
also a common symbol because many
legends say he created the horse and
other variations of it such as the
Pegasus and unicorn. The bull is also
one of his symbols because legend also
says he accidentally created them when

• Poseidon also represents a set of
standards like many of the other gods.
He generally represents a change in
character because his moods are always
shifting. He is very helpful to mortals at
times but can quickly be angered and
destructive.
6. Poseidon’s family
• Poseidon’s wife is Amphitrite, but he is
said to have mated with many creatures.
• Children: Cyclops, Pegasus, Arion, and
the giant Otus.
