4. OVERVIEW OF SOFTWARE
• SOFTWARES
They are sets of machine readable
instructions that directs a computer’s
processor to perform specific tasks to come up
with the desired result.
• Two major kinds of software
– System Software
– Application Software

5. SYSTEM SOFTWARE
• A collection of programs
• Enables the application software to interact
with the hardware
• Operates in the background and controls its
computer’s hardware
• Examples: Operating System, Device
Drivers, Servers, Utility software etc.

6. APPLICATION SOFTWARE
• End-user software
• Two major categories
• General purpose
• Special purpose
• Examples: enterprise software, office
suites, graphics software and media
players.

7. General Purpose And Special Purpose
Application Software
• General Purpose Software are designed to
perform common information processing jobs
for end users but not in support of a specific
purpose. Example: MS office, VLC media
player
• Special Purpose Software are designed to
perform highly specific tasks. Example: ERP
software, CAD software, Games.
