Introduction:
About Landline:
A landline is a telephone line which travels through a solid medium, either metal wire or
optical fibre. This is distinguished from a mobile cellular line, where the medium used is the
airwaves. Landlines usually cost less than cellular lines and provide better voice quality,
and are used when there is no need for mobility or where cellular service is unavailable.
A land line is also used to increase the security of communications, as it cannot be
intercepted by a receiver without physical access to the line.
The term landline is also used to describe a connection between two or more points that
consists of a dedicated physical cable, as opposed to an always-available private link that
is actually implemented as a circuit in a wider switched system.
The implication of a landline in this context is one of security and especially of
survivability.

About Telecom sector in India:
The Indian Telecom Sector
India is the fourth largest telecom market in Asia after China, Japan and South Korea.
The Indian telecom network is the eighth largest in the world and the second largest
among emerging economies. At current levels, telecom intensiveness of Indian economy
measured as the ratio of telecom revenues to GDP is 2.1 percent as compared with over
2.8 percent in developed economies.
Indian telecom sector has undergone a major process of transformation through
significant policy reforms. The reforms began in 1980s with telecom equipment
manufacturing being opened for private sector and were later followed by National
Telecom Policy.
Historically, the telecom network in India was owned and managed by the Government
considering it to be a natural monopoly and strategic service, best under state's control.
However, in 1990's, examples of telecom revolution in many other countries, which
resulted in better quality of service and lower tariffs, led Indian policy makers to initiate a
change process finally resulting in opening up of telecom services sector for the private
sector

TELECOMMUNICATION:
Telecommunication is the transmission of signals over a distance for the purpose of
communication. In modern times, this process almost always involves the sending of
electromagnetic waves by electronic transmitters but in earlier years it may have involved the
use of smoke signals.
Today, telecommunication is widespread and devices that assist the process, such as the
television, radio and telephone, are common in many parts of the world. There is also a vast
array of networks that connect these devices, including computer networks, public telephone networks,
radio networks and television networks. Computer communication across the Internet, such as e-mail
and instant messaging, is just one of many examples of telecommunication.
It estimates place the telecommunication industry's revenue at $1.2 trillion or just under
3% of the gross world product.[8] Good telecommunication infrastructure is widely
acknowledged as important for economic success in the modern world on micro- and
macroeconomic scale.

Telecom Sector in India: Vision 2020:
The vision of Indian telecom sector for the year 2020, i.e., about two decades from now.
Development being a continuous process, the choice of the year 2020 is just an arbitrary
division of time, a predefined time horizon to take stock of what is likely to be achieved
Pre-portrayal of a stage of development in future requires understanding of the process of
change, the dynamics that set law of motion. In attempting to do so, the present paper
deciphers the recent past.
Process of change is often volatile and responsive to intervention and global
Circumstances impacting it. In such an inherently dynamic situation it is
Convenient to assume that cross-country experiences incubate the most recent
seeds of change. This is because countries at various stages of development
Encapsulate developmental experiences that occur with the passage of time.
The present paper isolates the agents of change based on international
experiences and situates India in this development continuum. The agents of
change, as observed from international perspective, have been broadly
categorized into economic structure, competition policy and technology.
Economic reforms and liberalization have driven telecom sector through several
transmission channels of which these three categories are of major significance.
The paper, as it unfolds, is divided into six sections. Section 1 gives a brief
account of the era of competition that was heralded in Indian telecom sector and
the results achieved. Analysis of the results, particularly comparison with other
major countries intrigued further discussions on economic structure, synergy
between telecom and IT, competition policy and technology in sections 2, 3.4 and
5 respectively. Logical extension of the arguments, as they developed, extended
to a vision for 2020 in each of these sections.

VISION:
Vision 2020 is a vision of information society and knowledge economy built on the
edifice of ICT. In India, the aggressive expansion of public sector telecommunications
infrastructure in hitherto uncharted territories of geographically remote locations would
unleash latent economic energies and market forces, which will erode the very foundation
of perceived lack of profitability of rural investment among the private investors. Once
this is achieved, Vision 2020 will be a vision of wealthier and more equal society full of
creativity, innovation and competition.

Reforms and Performance:
India, like many other countries of the world, have adopted a gradual approach to
telecom sector reform through selective privatization and managed competition in
different segments of the telecom market. To begin with, India introduced private
competition in value-added services in 1992 followed by opening up of cellular
and basic services for local area to private competition. The Telecom Regulatory
Authority of India (TRAI) was constituted in 1997 as an independent regulator in
this sector. Competition was also introduced in national long distance (NLD) and
international long distance (ILD) telephony at the start of the current decade.
The current policy stance affecting telecom sector in India is presented in the
Appendix. Two state-owned public sector incumbents with a large existing
subscriber base dominate the fixed line service. As on December 31, 2001, the
two Public Sector Enterprises (PSEs), BSNL and MTNL2 owned 34.73 million
Direct Exchange Lines (DELs) against 0.45 million privately owned DELs. These
two PSEs were allowed belated entry into the cellular segment in the beginning
of the present decade. Consequently, their cellular subscriber base is tiny
compared to the private operators. Out of 7.3 million cellular subscribers in the
country in June 2002, they had only 0.2 million subscribers.

International Significance
There are *38 mobile operators worldwide, who have 10 million plus customers. Within
this Group 38, there are 15 mobile operators who are from Asia. In this regard, it is a
proud moment for the Indian GSM industry with Airtel becoming the first Indian GSM
operator to join this international club as its 39th
member worldwide and the 16th
in Asia.
The National Appeal of Airtel
Airtel enjoys the unique distinction of being the only mobile service, having a customer
base of a million plus in 3 telecom circles like Delhi, Punjab & Karnataka. This reflects
the leadership position enjoyed by Airtel both in the North and South of India. It is
milestones like these which have contributed towards Airtel acquiring an all India market
share of over **26% amongst the GSM customers. This in effect means that one amongst
every four GSM mobile users in the country is an Airtel customer

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited:
History:
The foundation of Telecom Network in India was laid by the British sometime in 19th
Century. The history of BSNL is linked with the beginning of Telecom in India. In 19th
century and for almost entire 20th century, the Telecom in India was operated as a
Government of India wing. Earlier it was part of erstwhile Post & Telegraph Department
(P&T). In 1975 the Department of Telecom (DoT) was separated from P&T. DoT was
resposnsible for running of Telecom services in entire country until 1985 when
Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) was carved out of DoT to run the
telecom services of Delhi and Mumbai. It is a well known fact that BSNL was carved out
of Department of Telecom to provide level playing field to private telecoms.Subsequently
in 1990s the telecom sector was opened up by the Government for Private investment,
therefore it became necessary to separate the Government's policy wing from Operations
wing. The Government of India corporatised the operations wing of DoT on October 01,
2000 and named it as Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL).BSNL operates as a public
sector.]

BSNL Present & Future
Since its corporatisation in October 2000, BSNL has been actively providing connections
in both Urban and Rural areas and the efficiency of the company has drastically improved
from the days when one had to wait for years to get a phone connection to now when one
can get a connection in even hours. Pre-activated Mobile connections are available at
many places across India. BSNL has also unveiled very cost-effective Broadband internet
access plans (DataOne) targeted at homes and small businesses. At present BSNL enjoy's
47% of market share of ISP services. [1]Indian Communications Minister Thiru
Dayanidhi Maran has declared year 2007 as "Year of Broadband" in India and BSNL is
gearing up to provide 5 million Broadband connectivity by the end of 2007. BSNL has
upgraded existing Dataone (Broadband) connections for a speed of up to 2 Mbps without
any extra cost. This 2Mb/s broadband service is being provided by BSNL at a cost of just
US$ 5.5 per month. Further, BSNL is planning to upgrade its broadband services to Triple
play (telecommunications) in 2007.
BSNL has been asked to add 108 million customers by 2010 by Indian Communications
Minister Thiru Dayanidhi Maran [2]. With the frantic activity in the communication sector
in India, the target appears achievable, however due to intense competition in Indian
Telecom sector in recent past BSNL's growth has slowed down.

  • 7. A PROJECT REPORT ON COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF AIRTEL AND BSNL LANDLINE Babasabpatilfreepptmba.com Page 7 Introduction: About Landline: A landline is a telephone line which travels through a solid medium, either metal wire or optical fibre. This is distinguished from a mobile cellular line, where the medium used is the airwaves. Landlines usually cost less than cellular lines and provide better voice quality, and are used when there is no need for mobility or where cellular service is unavailable. A land line is also used to increase the security of communications, as it cannot be intercepted by a receiver without physical access to the line. The term landline is also used to describe a connection between two or more points that consists of a dedicated physical cable, as opposed to an always-available private link that is actually implemented as a circuit in a wider switched system. The implication of a landline in this context is one of security and especially of survivability.
  • 8. A PROJECT REPORT ON COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF AIRTEL AND BSNL LANDLINE Babasabpatilfreepptmba.com Page 8 About Telecom sector in India: The Indian Telecom Sector India is the fourth largest telecom market in Asia after China, Japan and South Korea. The Indian telecom network is the eighth largest in the world and the second largest among emerging economies. At current levels, telecom intensiveness of Indian economy measured as the ratio of telecom revenues to GDP is 2.1 percent as compared with over 2.8 percent in developed economies. Indian telecom sector has undergone a major process of transformation through significant policy reforms. The reforms began in 1980s with telecom equipment manufacturing being opened for private sector and were later followed by National Telecom Policy. Historically, the telecom network in India was owned and managed by the Government considering it to be a natural monopoly and strategic service, best under state's control. However, in 1990's, examples of telecom revolution in many other countries, which resulted in better quality of service and lower tariffs, led Indian policy makers to initiate a change process finally resulting in opening up of telecom services sector for the private sector
  • 9. A PROJECT REPORT ON COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF AIRTEL AND BSNL LANDLINE Babasabpatilfreepptmba.com Page 9 TELECOMMUNICATION: Telecommunication is the transmission of signals over a distance for the purpose of communication. In modern times, this process almost always involves the sending of electromagnetic waves by electronic transmitters but in earlier years it may have involved the use of smoke signals. Today, telecommunication is widespread and devices that assist the process, such as the television, radio and telephone, are common in many parts of the world. There is also a vast array of networks that connect these devices, including computer networks, public telephone networks, radio networks and television networks. Computer communication across the Internet, such as e-mail and instant messaging, is just one of many examples of telecommunication. It estimates place the telecommunication industry's revenue at $1.2 trillion or just under 3% of the gross world product.[8] Good telecommunication infrastructure is widely acknowledged as important for economic success in the modern world on micro- and macroeconomic scale.
  • 10. A PROJECT REPORT ON COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF AIRTEL AND BSNL LANDLINE Babasabpatilfreepptmba.com Page 10 Telecom Sector in India: Vision 2020: The vision of Indian telecom sector for the year 2020, i.e., about two decades from now. Development being a continuous process, the choice of the year 2020 is just an arbitrary division of time, a predefined time horizon to take stock of what is likely to be achieved Pre-portrayal of a stage of development in future requires understanding of the process of change, the dynamics that set law of motion. In attempting to do so, the present paper deciphers the recent past. Process of change is often volatile and responsive to intervention and global Circumstances impacting it. In such an inherently dynamic situation it is Convenient to assume that cross-country experiences incubate the most recent seeds of change. This is because countries at various stages of development Encapsulate developmental experiences that occur with the passage of time. The present paper isolates the agents of change based on international experiences and situates India in this development continuum. The agents of change, as observed from international perspective, have been broadly categorized into economic structure, competition policy and technology. Economic reforms and liberalization have driven telecom sector through several transmission channels of which these three categories are of major significance. The paper, as it unfolds, is divided into six sections. Section 1 gives a brief account of the era of competition that was heralded in Indian telecom sector and the results achieved. Analysis of the results, particularly comparison with other major countries intrigued further discussions on economic structure, synergy between telecom and IT, competition policy and technology in sections 2, 3.4 and 5 respectively. Logical extension of the arguments, as they developed, extended to a vision for 2020 in each of these sections.
  • 11. A PROJECT REPORT ON COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF AIRTEL AND BSNL LANDLINE Babasabpatilfreepptmba.com Page 11 VISION: Vision 2020 is a vision of information society and knowledge economy built on the edifice of ICT. In India, the aggressive expansion of public sector telecommunications infrastructure in hitherto uncharted territories of geographically remote locations would unleash latent economic energies and market forces, which will erode the very foundation of perceived lack of profitability of rural investment among the private investors. Once this is achieved, Vision 2020 will be a vision of wealthier and more equal society full of creativity, innovation and competition.
  • 12. A PROJECT REPORT ON COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF AIRTEL AND BSNL LANDLINE Babasabpatilfreepptmba.com Page 12 Reforms and Performance: India, like many other countries of the world, have adopted a gradual approach to telecom sector reform through selective privatization and managed competition in different segments of the telecom market. To begin with, India introduced private competition in value-added services in 1992 followed by opening up of cellular and basic services for local area to private competition. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) was constituted in 1997 as an independent regulator in this sector. Competition was also introduced in national long distance (NLD) and international long distance (ILD) telephony at the start of the current decade. The current policy stance affecting telecom sector in India is presented in the Appendix. Two state-owned public sector incumbents with a large existing subscriber base dominate the fixed line service. As on December 31, 2001, the two Public Sector Enterprises (PSEs), BSNL and MTNL2 owned 34.73 million Direct Exchange Lines (DELs) against 0.45 million privately owned DELs. These two PSEs were allowed belated entry into the cellular segment in the beginning of the present decade. Consequently, their cellular subscriber base is tiny compared to the private operators. Out of 7.3 million cellular subscribers in the country in June 2002, they had only 0.2 million subscribers.

The history of BSNL is linked with the beginning of Telecom in India. In 19th century and for almost entire 20th century, the Telecom in India was operated as a Government of India wing. Earlier it was part of erstwhile Post & Telegraph Department (P&T). In 1975 the Department of Telecom (DoT) was separated from P&T. DoT was resposnsible for running of Telecom services in entire country until 1985 when Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) was carved out of DoT to run the telecom services of Delhi and Mumbai. It is a well known fact that BSNL was carved out of Department of Telecom to provide level playing field to private telecoms.Subsequently in 1990s the telecom sector was opened up by the Government for Private investment, therefore it became necessary to separate the Government's policy wing from Operations wing. The Government of India corporatised the operations wing of DoT on October 01, 2000 and named it as Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL).BSNL operates as a public sector.]
