AISNE MS Diversity Conference 2018 - Ben Kahan, Zeezee Canning

Notes de l'éditeur

  1. [Hellos]... Today we’re going to talk about how we use our voices through King’s Dharma, a multimedia production designed for both film and stage. Above us are some photos and a video of our work in progress so far. We’ll show you some of the gear we used in the photos later on in the presentation...so don’t worry! We have it all planned out as follows...
  2. Zeezee: Today we’ll try to answer the following questions: What is voice? What is identity? How are Ben and I using our voices in the larger world? After we introduce ourselves a bit more, I’ll start by talking about what makes up our identities and how different artists have explored their own. Ben: Then, [Ben insert summary here]. Zeezee/Ben: At the end, we’ll talk about how we’re exploring our own identities through KD through a Demo of the work we’ve done so far.
  3. My name is Zeezee and I am an alumni of DCD. I am currently studying the Gallatin School of Individualized Study in NYU where I am currently concentrating in multimedia, religion & ideology, and economics. I am also looking to include the minor: Business of Entertainment Media & Technology, which will help my pursuit of multimedia, especially in the performing arts. I met Ben at the Cambridge School of Weston, my high school for 4 years. I enjoy participating in theatre, digital photo manipulation, and caring for my bird, Peter.
  4. Who are you? Really, the question should be who am I? While the answer should always be 24601, our response was to reflect on ourselves. Introspection helped define our story and the characters within the world we created.
  5. Zeezee: How do I know who you are? How do I know that you’re American? How do I know you’re a student? Is it the way you dress? How you make me feel? For that matter: Does identity include the way you connect with others? The way you think about the world?
  6. How do we know its him? How is he showing his identity—who he is—and how does his identity affect us? We can clearly see he is projecting his identity using his own words. Very classic example of voice. He talks about his vision and his “dream.” His use of words is what made him successful! It’s what connected thousands of people under one idea—under an ideology.
  7. A story that makes the unnatural seem natural. A story that naturalizes something that wouldn’t seem quite right if we looked at it at face value. For instance: Why do we think eating bugs are gross, when so many other cultures around the world see it as a yummy desert or delicacy? Well, some people would say it’s because eating bugs is gross, it’s not an animal, or that it’s not meant to be digested…. because it’s not part of our culture. This rationale—this story—that we’ve told ourselves about the world that we see around us is part of our ideology.
  8. Let’s go back to MLK’s example: Before he became an activist, people thought it was natural for segregation and racism to happen in the States: their story of how the world worked was that black people are inferior to white people because of their skin color. But does that mean it’s natural for two people to be separated by the color of their skin? No! MLK exposed that flaw in the ideology of the time. He showed people that it was not natural for us to think that people are inferior due to the way they look. That’s what made him famous.
  9. Okay, let’s look at another example, one that everyone will be familiar with and that can illustrate my point in a different way. Everyone knows this castle.
  10. Also, everyone knows this movie. What are the producers of this film trying to share with you? Adventure, love, magic, sure. But, back to MLK, what is Disney trying to naturalize? I’d say the story of Aladdin naturalizes the idea that true Love happens because a mythical figure allows it to happen: the Genie allows Aladdin and Jasmine to fall in love. Without him, it would have never happened. Does this mean that you need a magical figure like a Genie to fall in love? No! In fact, I think everyone can agree that sounds quite silly. But, that is the ideology that Disney explains through Aladdin: The supernatural is what allows Love to happen. (For scholars out there, this ideology can also be found in certain religions.) Now, how do they show it? Obviously they aren’t using their voice like Martin Luther King. So how do they explain this view of Love?
  11. Maybe not all of you have seen this more recent adaptation of Aladdin. But I think my points will still hold since it is the same story and characters. How is a musical different than a movie? Assuming Disney is still telling the same story with the same characters and plot, what’s different about a musical? What can a live show do that a pre-recorded movie cannot when showing Disney’s ideology?
  12. This is exactly what Ben and I explore. How different art forms expose a foreign—Eastern—ideology.
  13. Before I hand it off to Ben, I’d like to reflect on my contribution to this massive project so far: how storytelling has given me a voice. It allows for reflection. It allows me to explore my own voice—my own ideologies—within the context of the story that we are telling. How are our voices fitting in with the original ideology? Do we agree with what is proposed in the original text? What happens when we disagree? The writing process forces articulation. When I had to write the script, I had to really think about what I was saying through the characters and plot. Remember why we love Disney’s Aladdin? I always have to think about the audience. I have to express myself—and the story!—clearly for everyone to be able to understand me and my interpretation of Dharma. This was crucial. The entire process of expressing my ideology allows me to refine and change it as I learn more about myself and what Dharma means to me. Inspiration influences who I am, and therefore my voice. By sharing this presentation and my process with you all, hopefully that will also encourage a change in the way you see the world.
  14. In short… King’s Dharma allows me to articulate my own voice through connecting with and exploring a foreign ideology. [SEGWAY BETWEEN VOICE AND IDENTITY]
  15. Who are you? What are you? What makes you… you? How do we express our own voice? through our expression of identity
  16. While working on King’s Dharma, it’s lead to an exploration of who I am through the choices and actions that I made. Hobbies define your interests which define your actions, character traits and thus your personality. My hobbies have always lead towards those of art and technology. Photography– how we use light to explore feeling? Aerial photography– using drones to make art. Pretty awesome right?
  17. Anyone know what this is? Or what this type of drawing is called? It’s a design submitted by Microsoft for a patent on the hinge. Here’s a radical idea: math can be art (and fun), technology is art. But I didn’t say technology, I said engineering. What is engineering? The design process. Learning through doing, that’s engineering. So how can that be art? Let’s revisit that beautiful castle that zeezee showed us just a little while ago.
  18. Pretty right? What if I told you Disney is so good at animation, they animated a castle. A real castle, not digital. For those of you who have been to Disney world within the last year, you should know what’s coming next. For everyone else, sit back, relax, and pretend you’re at Disney.
  19. Isn’t that amazing? I promise you that it’s even more spectacular in person. so how did they do it? The technical term is spatial augmented reality but we usually call it projection mapping. If any of you know of the Vive or watch youtubers play VR, this is like that but in real life. While I do not know entirely how Disney does this, I can assure you that this use of technology is what I would consider art. In fact, it is a perfect example of the intersection of art and technology.
  20. So what do I mean by intersection? Now I’m not quite sure what they talk about in middle school anymore but intersectionality is the middle of a venn diagram. But in intersectionality, instead of saying how are these different, we say how are they the same. As you can see, I have compared apples and pineapples. Feel free to laugh, I think it’s funny.
  21. You are more than a singular aspect, you are more than a single voice. That’s what makes us different; if we all had the same story, wouldn’t the world be boring? So let’s switch gears, and take a look at why zeezee and I are here. Trust us, it’s more than just to tell you that a fruit didn’t make an iphone or that Disney may be the best place on earth. I say that not only do voice and identity intersect each other, they are reflections of one another. Why do we embody voice and identity? Well, *we* don’t, but King’s Dharma does and we created it.
  22. King’s Dharma incorporates little pieces of everything we have talked about and everything you will experience today and as you continue to grow up. Talk about how script was written with technology in mind ∴ script depends on technology Certain scenes were designed for innovative technological shit ∴ we needed to create technology for the script and the show
  23. Late 2015: I took a class on the Ramayana, which is literally translated as “Rama’s Journey.” It tells a hero’s journey of Lord Rama, the “perfect man” and reincarnation of a God, who’s devotion to Dharma leads to him being a hero—saving his princess from an evil Demon King—and, after, the cause of his wife’s death. At the end of the class, my English teacher asked if I wanted to direct a play based on the story. I agreed with the goal of getting the audience to understand “Dharma,” the driving idea of the story. Soon enough, I ran into Ben and asked if he’d want to help me with the production since I knew I wanted to use technology and media, not just traditional theater. Immediately, we both knew this task of getting the audience to understand a foreign concept of “Dharma” would require a drastic change to our original approach: we would have to change the story itself if we wanted people to understand. 2016: That summer of my Sophomore-Junior year, after consulting with my English teacher about what can and cannot be changed about the original text, Ben and I thought up our story, and I wrote the script in 2 weeks. It was awesome. After the script was finished, we began thinking of how to express the scenes in new and innovative ways. Ben will show what we’ve come up with in a bit. 2017 – Present: Now, we’re continuing to work on designing the technology. We are testing new ideas, new tech, and pushing the boundaries as to what has been done in theater.
  24. So now that we know what intersection is, we can say that the technology and art from Disney intersect each other. Apples and Pineapples intersect each other. Voice and identity intersect each other. What do I mean by this?
